Posting in the Fediverse since last week: @npub1wy9…7u32! 🇬🇧 ☀️
The UK Solar Physics community (UKSP) is a Specialist Scientific Group affiliated to the Royal Astronomical Society. They regularly provide relevant news and nuggets both to their members as well as the international solar physics community at large via https://uksolphys.org/
If you're interested in the research of the Sun, our closest star, at all, consider following them for their announcements either at https://uksolphys.org/news/recent-news-summary/, or via their UKSP newsletter (mailing list), or now directly here via their Mastodon account @npub1wy9…7u32
Maybe don't expect them to interact a lot, but if you *are* here for their very useful announcements, it is now really easy to follow and also boost those. So, a warm welcome to @npub1wy9…7u32 🌞

The individual experience *is* different depending on your home instance, though (I have tried and am trying a few). Server rules matter, moderation matters, server federation decisions matter, technical decisions matter. I am only slowly learning to put words to what so far was mostly a diffuse feeling (learning by currently reading https://moveslowlybuildbridges.com/ by @npub1jhf…35pm). And I would argue that a lot of the time, instances that have some sort of screening or soft limitations in their sign-up process are often better moderated and nicer places to be.
I do however approve of the compromise of suggesting instances with open registration for new arrivals - where the suggestion is *not* mastodon.social - in order to not have that additional hurdle of seeking an invite, waiting for approval, or finding out about your own eligibility (or not).
That said, for the large number of people eligible for ac.social, the onboarding is blazingly fast and simple.

Very good approach to preselect a few instances and recommended these to make it easier for people to join. Given this particular audience, is there a specific reason you chose to not include https://academiccloud.social, which does a fabulous and very professional job of potentially serving all of the Max Planck Society as well as all students, employees and institutional units of a variety of universities? @npub1uwy…04at #GWDG

On the occasion of the International Annual Meeting of the German Astronomical Society, where a joint effort is happening right now to connect existing #fediverse accounts and to invite more members of the community to participate, here is a starter pack of accounts with a relation to Astronomy in Germany:
https://fedidevs.com/s/NjA2/
Are you all already following each other? Did you just get started and want to ask to be included, too? Would you like to suggest further additions to the starter pack? Are you discovering accounts in the list whose introductions should get boosted around a lot more? Are astronomy aficionados out there finding this list useful?

So thrilled to realize that the German Astronomical Society ✨ @npub1mjf…h4za ✨ has sneaked into the Fediverse last week!
Greetings 🥳
Let's make them welcome, shall we? Go ahead and start following them if you're interested in astronomy at all, and boost their introduction post above so everyone can know about this exciting new arrival.
I personally think this is huge, so let's make this work for them 🚀
I am also sure they will in turn be able to lure even more astronomers here, and we'd all love that, wouldn't we?
