Divine, a short video Vine-like experience, had their app go live this week. It includes vintage vines previously archived from the original platform. Instant nostalgia is a great hook.
But the thing I find most interesting - this is a Nostr app. But it’s not being presented to users as such, at all.
Lots of new Nostr users who don’t even know they ARE Nostr users. I’m curious how this will work out!
So far I’ve never seen a Fedi app do similar.

Holos Discover added a couple of new filters to its API search - minimum likes and minimum boosts. Additionally, you can pass contentType=image|video|audio|text|all|none to the `/api/search` endpoint and it works.
Interesting combinations, which I took advantage of for the Open Web Image Gallery.

To Mute for a few hours, in the default Mastodon UI, click my profile, and in the options menu, choose "Mute" - there is an advanced options section there, and that gives you the ability to mute me for a few hours - 6 should suffice!

If you mention a group account (lemmy, piefed, guppy, etc.) in your post, fediverse clients should either remove options other than public for visibility of the post (unlisted, direct, followers only), or at least warn the user that their post's audience may not match their expectations.

For my own needs, I had been building out a bookmark manager. I had thought about making it generally available / opensource but I have over 750 boomarks and the performance of the app is pretty bad!
So I was just curious if I was a one-off situation having that many or if it was common to be a bookmark hoarder. The way it's shaping up - an interesting split. If you use bookmarks, it's likely you have 100+. But the majority of people rarely use bookmarks at all, or very little.

I do like this UI and functionality, but as I looked in more detail, thinking about hosting the front end for myself, I noticed it was a fork of Soapbox.
I still don't quite know the history with Soapbox, but I do believe there is some bad blood with this application among fedizens.
So just be aware - it's not the primary Soapbox app or related devs, but it's based on that code.

Agreed, one of the things I am most proud of is that I never built anything to take away someone else's job.
I have had the privilege of working at small to medium sized businesses, where my goal was to make the lives of staff easier, with code or with new strategies on how to use existing applications. I work side by side with them to understand what they specifically need in that moment.
When I don't see and feel that connection and joy, it's time to move on.

I like the concept of personally curated account collections from @npub1ekk…vy6m, @npub1wha…fj2r Tapestry and @npub1dad…y568 Channels.
Surf app has a fun interface and some excellent filtering tools.
Channels lets you stay in your comfy app of choice and get boosted posts in your existing timeline.
Tapestry has an enjoyable interface, and extremely customizable. A bit of a different beast - you build your own timelines, from just about any feed you can imagine!

I've made a @npub142g…kmy5 channel for Fediverse Development updates. It only contains official platform accounts to keep the feed focused. I plan to add RSS feeds of repository activity for those platforms that do not have official accounts.
Hint - create a new Mastodon List called "Fediverse Platforms", then check the "Hide from Home/Following timelines" option. Add @npub1jlc…n5rg to the list.

Mastodon's latest version has the ability to fetch missing replies from a conversation (under an experimental flag, not enabled by default).
This is a big deal, especially for smaller instances. Mastodon joins other platforms - of which I know of: Streams, GoToSocial, IceShrimp.NET and Bonfire - that pull back replies on request.
The hard work on the backend is done, and now there needs to be a discussion about how this interaction works as part of the user experience.

Here's what I found out. PieFed Feeds are built to federate, but not many platforms know how to handle the request right now.
Think of it as attempting to follow a starter pack. Once you follow the pack, it sends your account "Add" requests for every entry in the pack. If the admin of the starter pack adds a new community next week, you'll receive a new "Add" request related to the pack account.
Pretty cool, I do wish more platforms supported this!

Thanks to your comment I found a way to create a desktop seeding process. It's not perfect but maybe it will give someone an idea of how to create a little web ui / server.
1) Install the WebTorrent client
2) Go to a PeerTube channel and view source
4) Find and open the RSS feed
5) Do a search for "torrent" to highlight
6) Find video(s) you want to seed and copy the torrent link
7) In the WebTorrent client set focus to the window and then paste.

#FediForum has just ended. It was quite different from previous years. The addition of keynote speakers was exciting, and I think garnered a bigger crowd.
The un-conference portions take some getting used to for newbies but all were welcome into the discussion, regardless of expertise in the topic.
After attending 3 or 4 other FediForums I finally gathered up enough courage to turn my microphone on for a few minutes make some kind of sounds out of my mouth. 😅

I joined a session about data portability. This is the one thing about ActivityPub that disappoints me. Sure, you can migrate follows and followers. But the post migration is missing for most platforms. Truly disappointing.

The problem for me is the buildtime on Github Pages. It can take 15-20 minutes to build there before failing out. On my local box, it takes maybe 30 seconds, because of a webmentions plugin. That's fine. It also builds fine on Netlify so maybe I just switch over there.

It's been a few years since I built my website using Jekyll. It's starting to get stale. I learned a lot about IndieWeb while setting up, so I don't regret using it!
But the overhead of the build is starting to get to me. Longing for something that I perceive as simpler - paid services like micro.blog or omg.lol - or maybe 11ty. Not sure I can give up control to a paid service for my main site.

Excited to see some new apps for the fediverse drop recently.
This one is a cool - similar to how there are now Bluesky image centric apps like Flashes, the fedi dev @npub1dmg…knx4 has introduced Myo. It creates timelines of image and video from your fediverse accounts. Lists, hashtag timelines, etc. are supported.

Mike is discussing one of my favorite features - each feed can be broken up into separate tabs - look, read, listen, watch. Each tab gives you a slightly different UI experience.
My favorite - watch - provides a TikTok like timeline with video from all your platforms. I used this when TikTok was going away to find my favorite creators on other platforms and collected them here.

Additionally with Surf, you can combine publicly shared feeds (using the Lego brinks comparison again) to create mega feeds around a specific topic or your fave feeds all sqooshed into a single feed.

It’s currently in closed beta. It’s very simple to curate feeds and create them - no programming required. And you can share these feeds with others!

Surf is a social web browser - you can create feeds based on any interest desired - you are the curator! Rss feeds - YouTube - mastodon - Bluesky content all available to add to your feed. Also I love the graphic design.

A few points I’ve heard today:
Get people off centralized social media however you can
Focus on getting “normies” onboarded and staying around
Hide the complexities of federation - make it fun and easy.
I truly get the term “normies” but ouch. Also as the fediverse expands with more of them, our current community will create or find their own smaller safer spaces again.
Work on that has already started with the concepts of allow list federation.

It’s a bit loud in here y’all but I’m trying to focus. There were some discussions about the reluctance of podcasters to be in platforms without ad revenue. David is interested in something like sub.club but feels like it’s a tough sell. Similar with Patreon. Difficult to get enough paid subscribers to make up for the difference.
Gonna have to listen to this again when it gets published.

Hmm I did not know this…micro.blog has some type of import process for your posts on other platforms - Twitter, Wordpress and ghost were mentioned.

A common theme today at #FediverseHouse is owning your own content. Be that a blog, Indieweb site, or a social media account - you should have full control over it. Your own domain is a big part of it.
On a side note, one thing I like about micro.blog is that you can enable a feature to push all your content to your own git repository on a regular basis. Built in backups!

brings up a great point on this fediverse panel. Social doesn’t have to be big. Use the protocols being built to create cool small websites with a social aspect for you and your friends. It doesn’t have to be everything everywhere all at once. Totally agree!
