at the risk of pulling the "someone is wrong on the internet" move, AFAIK FF uses classic encoder-decoder neural MT. this is the precursor of LLMs, but meaningfully different. the models are orders of magnitude smaller, and they are trained on orders of magnitude smaller, "labeled" datasets (sentence pairs in a language pair, not boundless unstructured text).

Here's the hand-drawn sketch I made four years ago, and the initial frankenstein build that I just dusted off.
The idea is a forever-running engine powered by a small solar panel. It's an arsthetic object like a light mill, with no practical purpose.
It's like a last-ditch love letter to the idea of sustainable tech with solar power. And to open hardware and reclaiming tech from sterile white enclosures sealed off from us by consumerism.

Here it is running the 2D water simulation from earlier. After some more fighting with PlatformIO, I got the FPU working too. It's sweet and fast!

All mysteries resolved! It was an extremely embarrassing oversight: my code did not initalize the GPIO pins for CS, DC and RES. Along the way I also borrowed the init sequence from U8g2.
This board is now also fully functional! The creative phase can begin - it's coding all the way now.

Much additional soldering has happened, with one near-fatal mistake, which the circuit miraculously survived. I have working USB! But for today I've hit a roadblock: the display won't display.
Worst (but most likely) option is I got the order of the 24 pins wrong. Next is, the library I'm using sends an incomplete init sequence. I may even be using SPI wrong, though this is improbable.
The investigation will continue tomorrow with more tooling.

I am most concerned about soldering the USB and FFC connectors. But through a combination of inspired searching and luck, I discovered these two modules! They'll let me plug into my board and verify connections one by one, using the test pads where needed, and check that I haven't shorted neighboring pads.
These are my recent learnings :) Let's see how they'll hold up in practice.

This is by far the most ambitious board I've attempted yet.
- It's tiny! And packed. All SMD morsels.
- I'm wary of the many-legged beasts: a USB-C socket, 24-pin FFC cable connector, LQFP64 chip
- It has a 3.3V -> 12V boost converter for an Oled display; I've never built this kind of circuit
- I've discovered pogo pins! That's how the programmer will connect (pads at bottom right)
- Added a bunch of test pads (top) so I can verify sub-circuits while building up the board

In the VW models I last drove (e-Golf, ID.3/4), temperature and fan have no physical knobs. It's all integrated into the shitty touchscreen UI. Usually this "app" is inaccessible for minutes after starting a car because it hasn't "initialized" yet.
I hate to see generations of engineering culture and a whole manufacturing ecosystem go down, but fuck it, VW: you had this coming.

This whole week I've been frantically trying to make cyanotype prints of a series of plots on tracing paper. I dare say it's a finicky technique! I've got individual pieces that I'm happy with, but getting to a consistent series of 4 has so far been elusive.
But I'm extremely pleased with the Bathroom Window Caustics™ effect that I discovered somewhat by coincidence.

Spent the evening defining a more interesting spiral geometry. I'm loving the soft, flow-y, and dream-like output of this algorithm.
I am feeling for a way forward towards a longer-form piece with a compelling amount of variety. Lighting and composition are very sensitive, so I expect a lot of curation will be needed.
