Trying to play the devil’s advocate here, maybe it can make some sense if you’re rolling out multiple deployment environments and want to be able to reuse the build and can’t lookup env vars for whatever reason.
And/or if you don’t 100% control the oauth server and it has some arbitrary BS which forces rotation of the client secret that wouldn’t align with your release cycle (?)

I have some Erlang experience from working in an IoT automation and telemetry product.
The RF protocol was proprietary and it was handled by spawning a gen_statem (refactored from gen_fsm) process per product in the mesh network. It was simple but effective.

Would be so cool if progressive images worked, I suppose they could bring data usage down? Like if the app cloud halt downloading the image once it has enough pixels to be “good enough” given the size of the container they’re being displayed (and resuming the download if the user zooms in and stuff).
Have you documented the issues you are facing somewhere?

I’m one of those weirdos whom alcohol just doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to lol
Like it makes me more focused, less anxious and stressed out, to the point that it’s just not worth drinking more than a few sips in social gatherings.
Also, for about a year I had to take a shot of Whiskey in the morning to ease the pain of dealing with stupid coworkers.
It’s kind of sad that I can’t seem to have fun with alcohol (other than making drinks and fancy stuff) like normal people do but instead have it as some sort of “tool”.
Of course if I drink too much I will just black out like anyone else, but it’s mostly “Ballmer Peak” overall.

I don’t think it’s fair game to say nostr relies on DNS.
It’s not like matrix, activity pub and all that federated crap where identities are tied to server names.
We just happen to connect with relays to send and fetch notes, that more often than not do have a DNS.
And we have people building P2P experiments with nostr, which further proves the point.

As for self hosting a server, or even worse, needing to rely on somebody else to do that for you, doesn’t seem like a barrier most people would be willing to climb.
I personally think that some sort of automated arrangement of micropayments could suffice to incentivize bringing up more relays and funding “anonymous” ops, without bringing too much cognitive load onto end users.

If you consider that there’s a point where it becomes unreasonable to keep cramming features into a single app from both UX and development perspectives, and also that nostr is flexible enough to be the engine of multiple platforms, then it shouldn’t be unreasonable to think everyone would end up having more than one “nostr” app.
Even some simple case of having one app for notes and another for chats would be enough to match that criteria.

I never seen any other community like this.
It’s fascinating to see that, contrary to many other “communities”, where there’s some sort of stigma going off some sort of “upstream convention laws” and end up with one or two guys trying to hammer the same nail in slightly different ways, here on nostr it seems there’s an endless stream of creativity and willingness to attempt even the wildest of ideas, and in multiple ways.
And honestly I’ve ran out of fingers to count how many people and projects are building on ideas that align so well with things I have been cooking on the back of my head for years.
Granted I am kind of procrastinating getting my hands dirty but this community is so damn efficient.
Some day ago, another guy fixed an issue I was looking into before I could even clone the repo of thar project 🤣
Nostr is just built different. This is not your average “open sores” community.
This is proof that order emerges from chaos, not the other way around.

It seems like you’re headed in a good direction but then it’s no longer a drop in replacement, right?
I was referring to projects that aim to provide a Google Play Services reimplementation that can be just dropped in place, which doesn’t require any changes to make existing apps work. And that’s the approach that I think would lead to centralization.
Still, I think it’s important for OS developers to ensure that, to be able to let the device sleep as long as possible, they should provide app developers with APIs that would allow the OS to effectively “sync” background tasks so they’re executed simultaneously, resulting in a shorter timeframe where the device is woken up.
Then it shouldn’t matter all that much if you have multiple apps delegating this work to one or few other push provider apps, like it was proposed by another guy in this thread, or if you have many apps fetching individually.
What I found out is that our devices are damn fine at sleeping but once you do need to wake up, you better ensure you’re making use of every milliwatt “while you’re at it”, and synchronized timers work for both reducing the wakeup count and overall time spent at this higher energy state.

From a customer perspective, do you think insurances are a fraud?

Yeah it would be good to have some sort of standard so clients could show payment options from within their interface.
I am not very found of NWC into relays because of the not so subtle “commitment” to a specific set of relays.
If we think about nostr as a p2p protocol (because permissionless npubs and such), relays should be “mere concierges”, so maybe the client should arrange relay payments in the background for the user instead (you already have a wallet setup for sending zaps after all).
As for nostr21, I had some heisenbugs but the payment went through. Turns out it was showing me the wrong relay url in some places of the UI: wss://nostr21.nostr21.com instead of just wss://nostr21.com.

That’s a pessimistic assumption.
- PoW needs not to be ever increasing, this is not a blockchain
- the point of PoW/MP(micropayments) is not to eliminate spam altogether, there will always be a point of diminishing returns to increasing prices/difficulty
- maybe it’s worth to define what exactly we mean by spam: is it the flood of undesirable content? As seen on early bitchat geohashes? Is that annoying person begging for money once on random posts? Should we consider synthetic FUD funded by some sort of elite as spam? Etc
- PoW/MP is a viable way to, at the very least, rate-limit spammers in such permissionless/p2p/distributed systems, but it can’t stand alone
- ultimately we (IT) have come to the conclusion that security should be implemented in layers because annoying the attacker until either he gives up or some alarm rings is better than investing in one giant “impenetrable” layer. So there’s no shame in combining WoT with some sort of bootstrap list along PoW and common sense
Now it’s my personal opinion that MP is better than PoW, not only because it removes friction from end user’s devices but also because it can be an effective way to fund infrastructure. In this case, a wave of flood spam could turn into funding to develop better spam protections 🤣
But still, I think you’re right to think about the impact of well funded bad actors, though I don’t think they are usually called spammers.

Do you expect to bring this into iOS too?
I think the Yggdrasil app for iOS makes use of mDNS and/or AWDL so you effectively mesh using Bluetooth for discovery and WiFi for data traffic, even if devices are not connected into the same WiFi network.

Nah, JPEG XL is the best solution for images. Since it has progressive compression, we just need clients to halt the file download once the image reaches the desired resolution (and resume the download if the user decides to zoom the image).
Works for feed images too and you don’t get generation loss if the original image is jpeg.

That would make reusing seed phrases a little annoying but still sounds like a good idea.
Another thing to look into is the concept of message stamps (as seen on @npub1h0u…rwx8 ), and “while we’re at it”, make micropayments a way to fund relays as to make some market incentive to get more people running relays and fund fat media storage.

I think people are reading this as:
- there’s a spam problem
- there’s a weak filter mechanism in place
- proposing to replace the weak filter with nothing means “admitting defeat”/don’t care
I have no blockchain experience under my belt but while the core argument is technically sound I can see why people would react the way they are.
I think this is mostly a communication problem.

I really want to agree with this one but there’s another reason other than pride for fleeing your parents house early, sometimes the environment can really hold you back, to say it lightly.
Some people say that happy, rich families are all the same but each of the poor ones are fucked up in unique ways and I guess this thought applies here.
No money in the world can pay for peace of mind mind but still, getting trapped in the hamster wheel isn’t fun either.
Getting rid of the poor mindset out of older generations can be tough or outright impossible.

I think professionals are worried about the video resolution, because in order to keep the subject on both frames you’re restricted to the square intersection in the middle, and then you also need to crop the video so some footage won’t appear in neither of the outputs.
But still, given 4k cameras and the fact we’re going to compress anyway, I think it would be cool to shoot and playback “ratioless” videos like the iOS app Carousel.

It may be hard to believe but I was not aware of the current #bitcoin price when I joined nostr and was just vibe chatting about zeronet with GPT when it recommended nostr to me.
I was personally feeling broken inside, suffice to say I was laid off and burned out, bills pilling up, had to move back into parents house and feeling like a pointless waste of space overall.
HOWEVER, after being purple pilled by fucking ChatGPT, getting real interactions on nostr with people who believe what they’re doing some things began clicking.
I believe the first zap I sent was on a note about “fix the money, fix the people”. That really resonated with me, so I fired up Wallet of Satoshi (which had 1k sats from playing thndr games a few years ago) and zapped that note.
When I got fat zapped by @npub1sg6…f63m in a technical-ish note I could feel this is real.
Like, this is not a closed circlejerk nor an echo chamber of “only good vibes allowed” and definitely not a place for hypocrisy.
This is a place where people build, listen and care. Fucking loving this.

Idk if this #vlog was compressed or not but damn fine image quality makes me wonder if we should stop “shaming” 4k vlogstrs, because “I paid for every pixel and I’m going to use it” feels good i.e. at home with a good connection.
I know of an “easy” solution for the quality/size problem as far as static images are concerned: just convert everything into JPEG XL before upload + have clients aware that they don’t need to download the whole file to get a proper image displayed, so they can adapt to network conditions without any special work on relays (it’s called progressive compression or something).
I never heard of an equivalent solution for video though.
Anyway, #asknostr how would you fix this?

My point is that we shouldn’t (need to) be tethering npub identities and communities to relays because that also tends towards centralization.
Suppose that nostr.wine is the go-to relay to discuss about wine. Wine enthusiasts are going to gravitate towards that single relay because we tied a topic into it, so if that relay goes mad with data collection/goes down/whatever, you’re going to shake that community. And convincing people to use alternative wine relays is going to be harder because bootstrapping is complicated.
Silly example, but I think it gets the point across.
Another argument is that we can’t rely on an endless supply of goodwill like we’re doing. Serving media costs money, and if you are not paying a dime for the service eventually one of the following happens:
1. The relay goes down
2. The relay monetizes your metadata
And even if you’re willing to put mouth where your money is:
1. You’re tethering your npub with a specific relay (silly)
2. Payment is cumbersome (i.e. flat fees “punishes” text users over 4k vloggers
Overall, I think nostr is/can be much closer to some p2p protocols such as secure scuttlebutt, than it is to “federated garbage”, so I think we can steal some ideas from them, like I don’t need to sign an agreement upfront with a specific miner + monthly fee just to transact Bitcoin every once in a while.

I see where you’re coming from, but I’m afraid this is going to push users in the other direction, by putting relays first and foremost you’re basically giving away the benefits npub brings over federated shit like matrix and mastodon, and ultimately centralizes users around a few popular/topic relays.
What we should be looking for instead is some way to align the economic incentives so that “relays as cattle, not a few pets” becomes economically viable.
For instance, let’s say that relay ops get some reward and for participating in the network, and users only need to top a few sats do micropayments go through as needed.

I’ll have to confess, I made assumptions.
“They want kind 1, and they want to be seen.”
By whom?

Why?
So we’re in a position where some relay provides a mirror “for free/out of goodwill” and somehow we get an undesired outcome for some users.
If this was a jira ticket I would’ve asked for a user story/talk to the user because I’m not sure if either of us understand what is really hurting them (fancy way to say customers don’t always know what they want).
So while it could seem to be a “paradox” at first, “to be seen” and “to control the distribution”, it may actually be the case of “communication is hard”.
To be less abstract, my reasoning to untangle the “paradox” was that if the user doesn’t some notes to propagate freely in the network then there must be either a target audience or some “undesirable audience”. So that needed to happen at the npub layer, maybe adding cohorts tags to type 1 or close friends lists or bounded outboxes (i.e. I could add language and subject tags to my notes so that I could have my notes compartmented into multiple virtual outboxes or whatever that people could selectively follow, idk. Sounds like a completely unrelated idea but I think I like it).
Another possibility would be that the user understands deleting stuff from the internet is harder the more said content is replicated since deletions are in essence a gentleman’s agreement, but if that’s the case then the proposed solution of adding another optional request to not redistribute said content wouldn’t address the issue, risking resiliency for little to no tangible return.

My point is to spin up a podman container running a fresh install of whatever distro best fits any given experiment at any given time.

I think the only thing that can flare up more relays is economic incentives.
If we treat relays like bitcoin miners, for instance I don’t need to pay a monthly fee to a specific miner so he (and only he) can put my transactions into the blockchain, then it shouldn’t matter if a raspberry pi in Indonesia or nostr.build relays a given bit of something, I mean come on, we have lightning, it should be possible to arrange some micropayments sort of thing.
Regarding client complexity, it doesn’t appear to be much of an issue given we have some varying uses of the nostr protocol which don’t really need every single feature to work.
We didn’t have complex access control rules on Twitter. Mastodon kind of brought up this sort of entanglement between “here lies a community of likely minded people shouting into the same void” and “this same set of people have a server in common” but that’s just an “accident”, and they are forever bound together (just like with every federated protocol).
For them, “mobile accounts, server independent” is just a pipedream that shall forever be on the backlog. But we have npubs, we have lightning, we can do better.

And/or snapstr/nostories with proper encryption (at least for a “close friends” mode etc).
That way you keep relays decoupled from the distribution policies themselves (I mean, there’s no incentive for a relay to host something none of its users can reach).

Fuck I misread the whole point on performance.
No, that’s not the case I’m making here, my point is that Graphene (and any custom android rom for that matter) is not an Android “hardfork”, nor can it ever be, meaning that they can’t compete with android and build anything on top without playing the cat and mouse game of trying to keep up with the AOSP.
Sure you lose on the established ecosystem but that’s part of the cost in being a proper alternative.
If we keep reskinning Android it’s going to end up the same way as the browser market, where webkit only survives because apple pushes safari down iOS users throats, gecko from firefox is dying and every other browser is chrome with some patches on top.
I hope this makes sense.

I mean if the Linux “foundation” was insecure wouldn’t that also mean the Android foundation is just as insecure? Android is a Linux distro with an extremely specialized userspace but still linux beneath (I remember when Samsung used to brag about setting SELinux to enforcing before every other OEM and stuff like that).
And then performance of Android on top of “real” linux shouldn’t be different, we’re not running any sort of emulator or virtual machine, but even if we did use VMs, hardware assisted virtualization and paravirtualization should make the performance close enough to native that you could go as far as pulling a qubes style distro for mobile, but I don’t know if anybody is that much paranoid.

Might consider using a cryptocurrency card such as https://wirexapp.com/r/yangm97 or crypto.com (I won’t even bother digging an affiliate link for this one because I think Wirex is better. at least it should serve as an alternative/fallback).
Or, you know, having a few p2p contacts nearby. And if there’s none in your neighborhood, become the p2p guy!

I mean yes but actually no.
There’s nothing inherently insecure about Linux on mobile but I believe the problem you’re describing relates more to the lack of fine grained permission granting knobs and underdeveloped UX overall.
None of which can’t be fixed, and to some extent you are probably safer running android apps within the sandboxed android simulator running on top of sailfish than “natively”.

I want to piggyback on that.
Seeing some nostr based chat apps implementing group chats that rely on a single relay to work is the kind of centralization that “we don’t really need”.
Federated protocols such as activity pub shift the “sovereignty” away from a single big centralized entity into many little but still centralized entities but nostr takes it a step further by bringing sovereignty down to each and every individual npub.
So tl;dr: don’t “give away power” to relays, build features for npubs

I don’t want to shit on the devs but FirefoxOS was mostly Android based if I remember correctly, andGraphene is “just Android without gapps”.
Credit where it’s due, but you can’t claim to be a competitor when you’re just a fork running with a few patches on top.
SailfishOS, Ubuntu Phone (rip) and (more recently) postmarketOS are some of the “very real linux running on your phone”, which IMO have the proper “technical sovereignty” to be considered competition.

Yeah the same concerns apply to that NIP. I can see where this is coming from, but I disagree with the proposed solution (it sounds like someone was trying to reimplement mastodon silos inside nostr).
I mean, what’s supposed to happen if some client pulls a bitch@ and starts sharing events with nearby peers?
Sounds like that is an attempt to address the very real use case of “closed-ish communities”, and that I believe can be done in a better way than mimicking mastodon silos, thanks to nostr identity scheme and all the jazz.
Really it’s about keeping relays as an optional entity we use to conveniently relay data rather than soft enforcing some arbitrary policies.

I feel like this has great potential to backfire, by making blossom media restricted to a few relays you’re putting censorship resistance on the line, along with overall fault tolerance, decentralization etc.
