Part one of my reply...
I really am not interested in your professor's theory. It's misinformed.
If he bothered to take time to trace the CEOs of many of our "Canadian companies" or the biggest investors in our resources he would realize the US has been the dominant country using Canada as a "cash cow"
Also, he obvioously is unaware about the US interfereing with our politics.

Northern Catalpa, also known as the Cigar, Worm, or Bait tree
"the wood's beautiful grain is for furniture, interior trim and cabinetry. Catalpa has one of the lowest shrinkage/expansion rates of any hardwood. The tree is often sought out by fishing enthusiasts, not for the plant itself, but for a common parasite that is used as bait. The catalpa moth is widely regarded as one of the best live baits, and the tree may be planted strictly for this purpose." (wiki)
