Our newish tabby Notty Cat gets most of my Mastodon attention lately, but part of that is our established rescue cat, Suzi the floof, is no less photogenic. Trouble is, she's skittish and camera shy. She came in tonight wanting brushing, but it took a lot of coaxing to get her to look at the camera.

Some time back I posted a link to this article about a Northrup Grumman study of a lunar train. I used a lot of the same reasoning about dust when I came up with a lunar train concept in 1979, and I just found this concept model I built of a freight boxcar. I did a lot of drawings and made notes, but the model is (amazingly) all that survives.

A hundred protesters in Madras Oregon may not seem like much, but my late inlaws used to live there. It's tiny, isolated, and very red. For these people to even show themselves took courage. It's more significant than you know.

Frankly, content warnings are SO over-used on Mastodon as to be almost useless, and in my case, often counter productive. I'm not offended by nudity or sex stuff, but hiding it seems common courtesy. I can look-away from bothersome politics. I don't want to see violence or gore or scatology though, and I think that's legit too. But faces? Cats? Things that are pointy? Horrible politicians? Oregon is unusual in that we have almost no military presence, other than National Guard, the ANG fighters being the most visible. During the post 9/11 grounding, these were pretty much the only planes flying in the state.

Look, computer programmers, IT and security folks, it can be EXTREMELY difficult or even impossible for people with dyslexia and other related problems to type passwords (especially strong ones) "blind," that is, where the typed characters are represented by "#" or "."
A clear visibility toggle should be a design REQUIREMENT. WE can decide if someone is looking over our shoulders!

Mastodon is notoriously a difficult place for new users to establish themselves and learn their way around. Now, of all times, it is important for us to throw our doors open and welcome newcomers. Bashing them through transgressions of rules they don't yet understand isn't helpful. Friendly reminders to help them understand may be. And most of all help them find their People. Finding some folks have a very incorrect impression of #Mastodon.

I keep reading about how Mastodon is dying, or at least on the decline. But while it's had some growing pains, and has some inherent (though fixable) flaws that discourage many new users and drive some away, the COMMUNITY here just feels to me like it grows stronger every day!
I don't know if it's real, or if it's just my own experience, but things are feeling vibrant, alive, and interactive in a way that was pretty rare my first year or so here. So thank you all! #mastodon #fediverse

So, we have Orion, which is absurdly expensive and currently flies on probably the most expensive rocket in history (which still isn't really done yet). We have Starliner which isn't considered safe, isn't done, and at this rate, may NEVER be done. And we have Dragon, which works great, but is brought to us by an unhinged space-Nazi. We need to fund the crewed version of Dream Chaser, and we need to do it yesterday, to provide SOME balance to SpaceX.

My wife and I (and a lot of our writer friends) have never put DRM on our books. Early on I realized it was a pointless exercise. I would WISH that people pay for our content, and if you don't and can afford it, I hope you feel at least a LITTLE bad about it, but at least people are reading. Just try not to read your authors into the poor-house.

Be aware too, that ebooks can (and often are) available through many alternate outlets (sometimes directly from the author's store), if authors/publishers choose to do so. I have always criticized the idea that indies should make books exclusive to Amazon (or any single platform).

It's fortunate that the mission succeeded, and shows the robustness of the core design, but solid rockets have always been iffy, and I'm very bothered that this will eventually be used for crewed spacecraft. Solid rockets+people always seems to me to be a safety mistake (Challenger, anyone?) I'll take a liquid system with an "off" switch over a solid motor any day.

Picked up our Oregon ballots from the PO Box today. I'm convinced we have one of the best, if not THE best, voting systems in the country. It's safe, proven, flexible for the individual, and allows individual voters to actually research and take time to understand what they're voting on. Informed and considered voters are GOOD voters.

Very sad. I got into BBSs in Seattle not long after this, and met my future wife on one (we're still together, in what might be on of the oldest surviving online marriages in the country for all I know). BBSs pryed the door open for affordable individual phone modem use (against the Bell system's wishes) and kept it open until easy internet access mostly swept them away.

I loved my original Fitbits. They were life changing for me, and really helped me through some severe health setbacks. But then they got in financial trouble, and Google came along, and it's all been going slowly to hell, on both a hardware and software level. Sounds like it not over, and time to consider other options for my next watch.

I really like liverwurst, though I rarely eat it for dietary reasons. But I'm old, and I suspect the market for this stuff is aging out. Lots of once common products and dishes have all but vanished in my lifetime. Sometimes this is a good thing, but I worry that instead of eating healthier, things are trending towards more processed foods as a staple. Give it a couple of generations, and people may be eating nothing except "chicken" nuggets.

I'm guessing this would be a long solved problem but for "genius" Elon and his single-mindedness. Visual self-steering is unnecessary and over-complicated for this application. A "soft" track, perhaps in the form of a coded center-stripe, and some new code would fix this. But proving the imagined "perfection" of self-driving is more important to Musk. This is like his "no flame trench" debacle at Starbase all over again.

I stopped eating at Chuk-fool-a at least 20 years ago, when I became aware of their discrimination against LGBTQ+ people (before the term existed I think). I've got queer kids and family members, and I couldn't support that.
As for finding people to fill their streaming service, I hear there may be a lot of out-of-work Trump staff members soon. Seems like their belief systems should be compatible.
