Finished writing the tutorial script for Marble Game. Now I somehow have to figure out how to actually make it happen in sort of an on-rails fashion .... which goes against everything I typically allow in the game.

@nprofile…d2cr I get that. I kinda miss this simplicity, too. Working with a modern engine sometimes feel like you're dealing more with the engine than making the game if you feel what I mean.
But also at the same time I know with Unity, Godot I can make things I just would be too dumb to do myself.

But on the other hand I am also gonna keep my DVDs, too. Not just because I got all the movies in there, too, but also because it got the German dub which I hold very near and dear to my heart.

@nprofile…d2cr I never worked with an engine like that. But I did maintain a Descent 1/2 source port for... a decade? Jeez... but yeah that was originally software rendering. So OpenGL was put on top. Most of it was done before I took over, but it was very educational so see the basics of how you take some model data and put it to screen. Also all in pure C. No object orientation anywhere. :)

@nprofile…jk4m I do own the BluRays. But it's still a lot more clean than the SD footage seen on the widescreen DVD release. Especially the earlier seasons were sometimes incredibly noisy. Meanwhile the HD scan looks... waxy. Not as bad as some of those "4K 60FPS ai upscale" crap you find on YouTube, but still... it's lost something... :/

@nprofile…j8ju I said this on BS and I'll say it here: If you have to know what I hate more of both cancers on human creation, it's DRM. I felt about DRM the same way folks now feel about GenAI when Valve normalized it with Steam.
And as long as it stays at an AI banner and "we won't make statements either way" I think that's still outweighed by a definite and formulated stance against DRM.

What I love about Godot is that pretty much every resource, scene or node is text. Which means if I change an actor, a setting or even mess around in a level, I can see all that in form of a diff. I sorely miss that ability in Unreal. And yeah, yeah Unreal has BP diffs, but holy fuck are those annoying.

A while back I learned about "aphantasia" and I wonder if that's a real thing. Not that I doubt some folks cannot visualize things. Heck, I can only imagine things in very blurry terms. @nprofile…x6dj Yeah... I mean I kinda understand that with a magnetic accelerator you need multiple coils firing off in sequence so the projectile doesn't just get stuck somewhere... I've actually seen a Youtube video where someone accelerated a marble in side a ring with like 6 or 8 magnets... so maybe I should at least put a few coils in sequence and just pretend they know what they're doing.

@nprofile…x6dj So in turn, if I give players the ability to build a magnetic accelerator, it will be a piece of track with magnetic coils to the left and right. In the center will be the magnet area with its point of attraction being outside the area - in direction in which the magnets should accelerate.

Maybe I am a bit pretentious here. Cause after all Marble Dispensers can magically spawn an infinite amount of marbles. Is that realistic? Nope.
But once the marbles start simulating, they do that. Nothing is faked. Even magnets cause actual force on marbles to attract them.

I noticed that when I built the asymmetric mergers: Marbles sometimes rolled out of them. I fixed that by adding stoppers. I didn't fake it. I never do.
In the end, a marble machine follows the laws of physics (engine). If I now build SciFi teleporters, I undermine that very idea.

Over the years I created a backlog of parts I want to build for Saturday Morning Marble Game.
Some of them fall clearly into the "SciFi" category (Teleporters, boost pads, etc). Now I don't think I wanna make those.
My game isn't exactly realistic, sure. Parts hover in the air, marbles magically disappear from the floor.
But aside of that, the way how marbles roll around and interact with parts - how they tip over seesaws, being pushed by a gear - all that follows the physics of Jolt.

Chat, I need suggestions. In Marble Game, I got track pieces with a hole in them, allowing a marble to drop down to another track or whatever. I call those "Droppers" (screenshot, marked in red). Now I wanna build their counterpart (mockup in screenshot, marked in green). How'd you call those?

This is the biggest downside with a game driven entirely by physics: Even the best blockins you can make may miss some important detail you don't even realize was important. Then you spend 2 days modelling and sculpting, just to see the idea doesn't work out.

Any redesign I can think of would change the proportions in relation to related pieces. And messing with physics materials might just mess with marble flow too much. So the best strategy now is sleeping a night over it :)

Turns out, some of the new pieces are pushing too hard in terms of curvature.
Was designing them with some of the old crossroads in mind which work fine. But I didn't consider how much of a difference a marble driving into a straight rail would make. Spoiler: it's a lot.
So, redesign or scrap.

This mesh for my game has a harsh edge, so I'll use a Smooth and Bevel modifier which results in worse topology and shading than if I'd do it manually, but at least it's non-destructive, making iterations I'll likely never do a few minutes faster.

@nprofile…r8ll And it makes sense, really. Even with x264 I noticed that HD footage is so much easier to compress than SD. I always explained this to me that with HD you just have way more pixels of the same color you can block together.
Meanwhile I am sitting here with some noisy SD footage and every pixel compressed stands out like a bigger block in the noise pattern. So it truy makes sense that any lossy compression gets rid of *something* in there.

Spent quite a bit of time with the AV1 codec today and I managed to get an encoding profile that matches my trusty "x264 CRF20-slower" the closest. That includes examining individual still frames.
So I dunno if I'm still missing something (maybe AV1 needs a 2pass solution), but if not, AV1 is far beyond the point of diminishing returns - especially since AV1 is also still sower than the comparable x264 profile.

@nprofile…tc7m Thank you. I'll read into this. It's been a while since I dove deeply into encoding and I know my encoder presets and CRF values to get my desired quality/size for SD/HD sources... but translating that to AV1 is tricky.
Right now all my experiments with AV1 that are both fast encoding and smaller files than x264 so far result in a lower quality.

In the meantime, I figured out why it was so slow: I was using the "slow" preset I usually go for with x264 and still nets me around 150 to 200 FPS encoding speed. Using the default preset, yeah I also get a huge encoding speed boost... with some quality decrease.

@nprofile…tc7m Using HandBrakeCLI cause frankly I am overwhelmed by the ffmpeg syntax. Handbrake tends to compartmentalize this a bit more. But if you want, feel free to send me an encoder line. I'd love to try it.
With Handbrake, I got an average of 10 FPS at a 25FPS source using AV1.

While my DVDs are still dumping I am also experimenting with the encoding pass. With AV1 I could store each episode at the same quality but nearly half the size as x264. Downside is that each episode takes almost 10x as long to encode and uses a lot more CPU power. With electricity as expensive as it is, I'm not sure if that's worth it.

Honestly, the hardest thing getting those DVD rips going is the vast amount of tools available. For lossless rips I used MakeMKV in the past, but since that's not FOSS, I looked for alternatives.
dvdbackup is nice, but you end up with the DVD file structure and splitting that into individual episodes is a pain.
Turns out tho, mplayer can dump individual titles of a DVD no problem and those I can figure out easily using lsdvd. Problem solved. :)

@nprofile…vez7 But either way, I was planning on porting this code to C++ anyway because of speed reasons. GDScript is a tad too slow. And I feel it's an actual protection: Compiled C++ code needs to be decompiled and recompiled to become compatible with another platform. That's a LOT more complicated and time consuming than finding the encryption key of the game package.

Legal methods barely work across countries - especially if they don't give a damn about copyright - similar to mobile stores, too. So if someone sees your game and thinks they can make a quick buck - may just happen.

Marble Game has gotten ridiculously good at cleaning up excess marbles from the floor. Soon as the cleanup timer kicks in, it makes SURE your performance stays sane.
What's even more impressive is that I don't even use pooling. Godot gives not a single fuck.

Just as a comparison, here's how that same scene looks when running with Jolt.
I admit, I spent time balancing Jolt to work better with tight tolerances and compensate ghost collisions, but even at its default settings it was still usable.

After the @nprofile…xznw article, I decided to give Rapier another go, because I'm interested in new (deterministic) physics engines. But I can't make it work with Marble Game for the life of me. Ghost collisions everywhere.
What's worse, it breaks hinges and with a ton of moving parts and magnets, FPS drop into single digits.
To be honest, right now I'd rank it worse than GodotPhysics.

@nprofile…xvmr I am not sure if I understand then. Because this now reads as if I CAN have a file in which I specify which files to in/exclude. That would help me greatly. But from your previous posts I understood that this isn't possible. I'm a bit slow today due to lack of sleep. I'm sorry - entirely my bad. I may need to look up some tutorials about that.

@nprofile…xvmr Yeah likely. It's just... so I am making a sandbox game where the player has access to many, many different parts to build with. I am already organizing those files into folders based on their category. And for the demo I want to leave some parts of some categories out.
Reorganizing them purely on demo/full version will make organization a lot harder for me. Hence having an "exclude list" would be a nicer choice...

I'm aware the export dialog had a field where excluded files can be specified, but it's a bit basic. Ideally I'd love to have something like this:
#ifdef DEMO_MODE
[file list to exclude from demo mode]
#else
[file list to exclude from full version]
#endif

Got a ton of work done on Saturday Morning Marble Game over the past few days. Very proud.
Next I'll focus on some logic for the demo version of the game.
A global bool will do, but I also need to exclude a bunch of files from the build. Wonder if I can automate that. 🤔

My prediction for the next 5 years is that many studios will use AI for their games and not disclose it, hoping nobody notices. If someone does, they'll have their inter-I mean ChatGPT write an apology tweet stating that all AI art was just made as placeholders and should have been replaced.

I get that water cooling in PCs can be super efficient, but I can't bear the thought of having WATER right next to components that can be damaged by it.
So I like my PC cooled exclusively by fans.

some people have a dedicated box full of cables - charging cables, printer cables, USB cables, etc.
I have a box EXCLUSIVELY for SCART cables. Each time someone throws out an old DVD player, I'm like "lemme have that cable". Cause I feel I need them for my old Retro systems.
Which I don't.
Many systems I have use SCART connectors, true, but NONE profit from SCART to SCART cables. Not a single one.

@nprofile…spcm Yeah I tried isolating sounds, but it's as if my body tries to find an excuse to wake up. Then - while I still lie there and go back to sleep - ramp up its functions and uses all the little remaining energy I have just to stay awake.

I wish to live in a timeline where I one make a game that says "to figure out the controls of the game, check the CONTROLS menu" and then players saw this and actually did that - instead of having games that go "TO CROUCH PRESS C" each time I start a new game.

I think I'm falling back into this phase of insomnia where I technically have no problems falling asleep, but I wake up again after 2-4 hours due to a small noise or something and then am unable to sleep again. I am not sure if that even qualifies as insomnia, but it sucks nonetheless.

I always disliked Resident Evil 6, but credit where credit is due: Resident Evil 6 provided some good levels with the Raid Mode in RE: Revelation 2.
