@nprofile…3rdg Not quite. The effect I’m referring to is like if you accidentally get the sun in your eye: the bright spot burns a portion of your retina and it takes many minutes for it to go away.
When I look at a dark page, the light letters are so bright compared to the background that they sear themselves into my retina, so I get after-images as I continue reading and scanning. Sometimes it gets so bad that the after-images persist even if I stop looking at the page.
I think it’s different from astigmatism, which can cause blurriness with bright lines as well.

@nprofile…63pg I’m not a lawyer. But intuitively, as the SCOTUS implies, copyright protects the work of humans. When writing a prompt to generate art, a machine is performing the vast majority of the transformation from the billions of works it ingested, not the human. Granted, *how much* human work needs to happen for something to be “transformative” (and thus grant the person a copyright) has been a subject of debate for decades, but generative AI is nowhere close to that threshold IMO.

It appears that turning off the new “Smart Features” in #GMail that “provide smart features and personalize your experience” also turns off a decades-old feature that categorizes spam away from your Inbox.
Smart Features uses Gemini #AI to enable LLM-assisted email composition and summary, and to suggest stuff from your calendars and promotional items.
In other words, disabling GMail’s AI features requires you to give up a categorization feature that you’ve had for decades, long before “AI” as we know it today was even a thing.

One big red flag in a developer for me is when they complain about how much some old code sucks, when that code is *still running* and doing its job.
Shitting on *running code* tells me that a developer has little respect for the work that came before them, and little empathy for the developers who wrote that code, under different constraints, with different tools, in a different time. It’s good to want to improve things! But it should be done with a healthy appreciation of what already works.
Can old code become obsolete? Sure, but that happens *after* they are replaced by something better, not while they’re still operating (and we all know not every replacement is actually better).
Technology marches on. People learn new ways of solving problems. Tools improve. Organizations and resources change. To judge something written many years ago against the circumstances of today is misguided and—dare I say—disrespectful of those who came before.

One of the funniest long-running performance-art in-jokes on Facebook is the Celina 52 Truck Stop (“America’s Deadliest Truck Stop”), a page that posts fever dream photos of bizarre shenanigans supposedly happening inside a truck stop in Tennessee, featuring a recurring cast of characters, and celebrity appearances.
Looks like redditors finally found the actual location of the truck stop, and it’s one Eco Travel Plaza in Crossville, TN. Unilad appears to have found “Howard” (no last name) who is the author of the page. As I suspected, most of the photographs are real, and the people are real,(their appearance is far too consistent), and there is heavy use of photoshop, and only a little AI. There really is an 8-foot tall inflatable Piss Jugman mascot costume, and their antics are often done on location.
This is some serious commitment to the bit by a small group of actors over the past 4+ years. I salute you, Celina 52 Truck Stop.

“Quiet cracking” is a funny way of saying “over-exploited”.
Employers as a whole are now exploiting and extracting (i.e. stealing) so much value from labor—and demonstrating that they only want to devalue labor even more—that laborers no longer think the commercial exchange is worth their time and attention, so they disengage.
Focusing too much on laborers to help them cope or deal is a band-aid; this is a systemic breaking point, and we can’t all outrun the system. Focus on changing the system.

AI is a great way for private corporations to benefit from open source development without adhering to their license, isn’t it?
I think GPL (especially GPL3) gives me pause, and people who use MIT and Apache type licenses really have no recourse, but using AI to pattern match code is…well, it’s copying without copying, laundered plagiarism. It turns the authors behind the code into nameless resources to be exploited.
Anyway, just a random thought. Carry on.

This kind of overeager harvesting and storage of personally-identifiable data is potentially happening across many apps and services, because how would anyone know whether it’s happening or not? There is no regulation that enforces independent audits of any company that verifies the claims they make in their privacy policy.
Ironically, larger corporations tend to be more trustworthy than smaller ones, because megacorps are more aware of the negative consequences of lying (they have more money, so they’re attractive targets for lawsuit-chasers); all corpos that I’ve worked for have internal privacy departments that enforce compliance.
Having said that, I have zero trust regardless. I only upload things that I don’t mind being made public (which excludes my photo ID). Everything else goes through end-to-end encrypted channels. No exceptions.

I keep thinking about the Tea app data breach and it’s…it’s so BAD.
Women join that app ostensibly to inform and protect each other against abusive men, but thanks to the negligence of the Tea app leadership, they ended up doxxing themselves on 4chan.
The Tea app has been publicly hated by “Men’s Rights Activists” (i.e. abusers) on reddit. Now, 13,000 complete, unredacted selfies and photo IDs of members have been leaked—images which I presume include personal details like home addresses. The combination of targeted vitriol and this leak can potentially be very bad.
Tea’s privacy policy states: “During the registration process, users are required to submit a selfie photo for verification purposes. This photo is securely processed and stored only temporarily and will be deleted immediately following the completion of the verification process.”
Yeah, that’s a straight-up LIE.

OK, here is a publicly-shareable dashboard of #PublicBroadcasting stations most at risk (thank you @nprofile…cq93) . This list is sorted by “dependence”, defined as:
Federal revenue / Total station revenue.
In other words, a 90% dependence score means Federal money accounts for 90% of the station’s income.
Since Federal money is being cut by #Trump, the more dependent a station is on Federal money, the more devastated they will be.
I encourage you to pick some station that calls out to you (don’t all pick the number one station!) and find their website and make a *recurring* donation of $5 or $10 a month. Make sure it’s a RECURRING donation, so you give these stations a dependable lifeline.
Don’t forget, some employers will match your donations. Make your bosses support public broadcasting!

#TodayILearned that a car company in #Indonesia sold Porsche 911 clones in the 1990s that used Mazda engines located in the FRONT of the car.
Details are hazy, but it seems that an executive of Indomobil spun off a company called Marvia that took Porsche 964 body parts and basically cloned their shape, likely by making fiberglass molds from them. The body panels were then mounted on a Mazda MR90 chassis, retaining its 70 HP engine.
While Marvia was making these clones, Indomobil was working on a deal with #Porsche to sell the 996 in Indonesia. Of course, once Porsche got wind of the clone, the deal was called off.
Only 50 Marvia clones were made. Some people speculated that some “Marvias” were actually Porsches that were imported illegally into Indonesia, and given Marvia VINs.
So bizarre!

I grew up in Singapore, where a creole/pidgin variant of English called “Singlish” was widely spoken: it’s a mixture of English, Malay, and various Chinese dialects, with inflections and sentence structures borrowed from those non-English sources. #Singlish was commonly derided as low-class and inferior, especially by people who went to the UK for their studies. But I always loved it and loved learning it, because it unlocked so much of the culture and inner worlds of the people who spoke it.
No language is inferior. No “slang” is undesirable. All language is invented anyway, so love them the same, as long as the goal is communication and understanding.

I really love how Xiaoma listens to and learns to use Gen Alpha “slang” to deliver these speeches, using that slang as though it were a real language…because *it is* a real language.
We marginalize and dismiss non-mainstream languages and dialects because we want to keep our distance from the cultures of their speakers. Every variant of “mainstream”English language, from AAVE to creole/pidgin to Gen Alpha, is valid and deserving of respect and attention.

A friend of mine has a parent with Alzheimer’s, and they’ve had to walk them through problems and hiccups related to their tablet, which naturally has problems and hiccups because that’s just how it is with complex #technology.
And it got me thinking:
Whatever happened to videophones? Like, just phones, that you can see video on, and nothing else? For audio communications, we had wired phones, cordless phones, and super-basic cell phones that did ONE JOB (making voice calls) and did it extremely reliably, with no fuss, and no failure modes more complicated than “it’s physically broken, buy another one”. Why don’t we have the equivalent of that simple appliance, but for VIDEO CALLING?
My dad has a smartphone solely to make video calls with family, and because of that he has to deal with all the complexity associated with a general-purpose computing device, which he does not need.
The barrier of entry into video calling is too high. We need a single-use appliance.

I’ve been hearing from a lot of friends in the software industry about #burnout these days. Here’s something you need to remember: you cannot survive poor management. There’s nothing you can do to rescue your project from the poor strategic decisions of those higher up the management chain. Stop blaming yourself. Plan accordingly.
If you’re an IC, do not overwork, especially if it’s for more than a few weeks. You will sacrifice your health and your future well-being when you do, and you’ll encourage your employers to give you the same treatment next time around. This is especially important to do when you’re a senior engineer, so you become an example to the less confident junior devs. Use your privilege to protect your teammates.
If you’re a manager, it’s your job to protect your reports from abuse from above, and to accurately and honestly report what your team is capable of delivering *without killing themselves*, and to refuse pressure to overwork.

This is a disaster. Limiting protections against blatantly unconstitutional executive orders to local jurisdictions removes protections from citizens in regions with complicit judges even while the order is challenged through the system.

I offended someone so badly today they left our group chat. My crime? Sharing jokes and memes someone made that is *somewhat* related to their work and telling the group the memes made me laugh (yes, the memes were funny).
I think having a sense of humor is important, even (especially?) about things you’ve invested a ton of time in building. I hope I never identify so closely with my work that I can’t laugh at the silly parts, especially when it comes from someone who has their own lengthy experience to draw from.

I’m feeling torn about the use of #AI in coding, especially now that models (especially “reasoning” models) are getting good enough that they can churn out “close-enough” code for a lot of uses. Products like Claude seem to be doing an OK job in rote tasks like churning out code scaffolding, implementing standard patterns, and refactoring; as well as doing the reverse: summarizing and explaining code, and giving examples.
Unlike chatbots and image/video generators whose primary output are various forms of harmful bullshit, I can’t reject coding AI the same way I can those other applications. The result of coding AI are *functional* and are in fact code that I would otherwise have written myself in much the same way. It may be because computer code is much more restrictive than human language that this is possible, because the room for *plausible* bullshit is so much less.

@nprofile…yqhx @nprofile…args I think yes, we need to harmonize standards of human rights, quality of life, and labor-organizing rights around the world. We can only counteract the exploitive nature of capital by focusing on empowering labor.
Some companies already do this internally (or at least they claim to): they insist on the same standards of compensation and treatment between their direct employees and their contractors, suppliers, or international branches. We need nations to strengthen this standard in trade negotiations with other nations, so that companies can’t simply exploit workers in another countries harder than they can in their homeland.
Also important is international enforcement of antitrust, and to ensure that fair competition *between potential employers* exists everywhere. Workers are only empowered when they can threaten to walk away from one job to get a better one across the street.

I think people wrongly equate tariffs with protectionism. Tariffs are just a tool, while protectionism is an overarching strategy. Tariffs can *hurt* American businesses, too: e.g. the Chicken Tax hurts US automakers more than it helps now.
I’m not sure if protectionism through tariffs ever helps—the 1930s protectionist tariffs led to the Great Depression after all—but we do know that NO protectionism hurts US workers…which is where your example comes in. For the past 40+ years, the US “free trade” policy essentially ANTI-protectionism: we exported US labor to countries with worse human rights and living standards to benefit capital. The result was devastating stagnation in wages, a destruction of US industries, and a widening of inequality.
And like you said, Trump is tapping into this: his base thinks he’s reversing the harms free trade, which he most certainly is not.

@nprofile…args I think what we’re seeing is not protectionism but a pure shakedown. The intended beneficiaries of Trump’s actions are (in order) Trump, the Trump Org, people who give Trump kickbacks in return for unfair trade advantage, and inside-traders.
There is no policy, no goal beyond short-term profiteering, no public interest, no thought given to long-term impact. It’s a mobster shakedown, plain and simple.

Sometimes I’m made painfully aware that the world is mostly optimized for early risers. I’m a #nightOwl and like to wake up later in the day, but I’m often forced to wake up earlier to accommodate appointments or other business.
Doing this ruins my sleep cycle and often causes sleep depravation that I then have to recover from over the next three to four days. But often I just have NO CHOICE, because EARLY is just how it’s done in this society.

#Tesla “Robotaxis” are supposed to start rolling out this month, and I predict it’s going to be a massive flop.
Not only because I fully expect Tesla’s models to be cost-cutting affairs, with as few sensors as possible, and trained to take many more risks than competitors like Waymo, and thus will make more errors and cause more crashes, but because the Tesla brand has gone down the drain. I fully expect Tesla robotaxis to be blocked, damaged, sabotaged, and vandalized, because they belong to no customer, but Tesla itself, and make for great targets of protest.
