I guess there's technically one nine in that uptime, but not in the decimal position you'd want it to be in.

I remember being taught in high school that Easter symbols were appropriated from a pagan goddess, "Estras" and I didn't question it because the fertility symbols made sense. Turns out it seems like that was wrong after all and the rabbits and eggs have fully Christian origins.

As of December of this year, the Draft in the US will become involuntary and automatic for men. If you or your male children are pacifists in the United States, you should consider ways to make that evident. If you are a member of a recognized peace church (Quaker, Mennonite, Free Methodist, etc), you might consider getting a support letter from a clergy member for your records.

I keep hearing people repeat in conversation, "AI is here to stay", and I can't help but wonder that if that's true, why do they feel the need to keep stating it like they're reminding themselves and everyone else of an obvious fact that maybe isn't so obvious or fact.

Not sure what this says about me, but as I was passing a car on the open freeway going freeway speeds, I saw a large coffee tumbler on the roof of said car. My initial concern for safety was quickly overridden by the physics problem presented - how aerodynamic was it, how full and dense was the liquid, did the car have an aluminum or steel body and could the cup be magnetic and how strong would it need to be?
By this time, I had already passed the car and couldn't warn the driver.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.

The worst thing is offloading GPU compute to system memory for a large model. It can be swapping on a spinner bad. The good news is it's unlikely an individual would really need to use the larger model versions.

There's a lot of it depends, but most of the cost is AI is in training the models rather than the queries themselves.

Fun personal fact: First time I tried to install Linux, I downloaded and burned Fedora *source* isos which didn't work (5 discs, IIRC). I then successfully downloaded and installed DEBIAN (only 1 disc), but got a command line prompt. After testing every DOS/NT command I knew, I never got a GUI, so I went back and burned the proper Fedora Core installer (another 5 discs).
In an alternative reality, I would have been a Debian loyalist.

I remember when I was a very young kid, being with grandfather while he worked on motorized equipment. He slipped and gashed his hand and had a good amount of blood but didn't seem to notice. I pointed it out to him and he shrugged it off and kept working. I was amazed because I would have cried in pain if it were me. Now, that I'm older I understand. Living in a 40 something year old body has had me increasing my tolerance to pain on the daily.

The state of #opensource right now is essentially there's not much that open source doesn't have an answer for, but the overall experience would be so much better if it all played a little more nicely together. Less generating and copying various tokens around manually, etc. For this reason alone, "distributions" remain necessary and should continue to exist.

Quakers, who were abolitionist and egalitarian long before either was acceptable and who are consistently peaceful and opposed to violence, are once again a threat to those in power. The fact that there isn't just one #Kubernetes distro, one filesystem, one package manager, one container runtime, all under the control of one company is a *feature* and not a bug. Aggressive vendor lock-in strategies* just don't work as well. Users having a choice to migrate and to get help from other users to migrate if a vendor doesn't work out is a *good thing*. If someone gets too greedy or shuts down the shop, we can migrate or fork and carry on.
*Android being a clear exception here.

For example: Fedora, SUSE, and NixOS have all figured out how to do immutable #Linux in their own awesome way. While I happen to appreciate how Fedora Atomic does it, as a Fedora user, I can also use the nix package manager and/or OpenSUSE's transactional-update if I really want to. Fedora users also benefit from Open/SUSE's contributions to btrfs as well.
If you don't want to know or care about any of that, there are more opinionated distros and that's also a *good thing*.

The older I get, the more I appreciate that there are different distributions of #Linux and that there are multiple ways of doing things throughout the stack. #opensource is not a zero sum game and we're all better for it. Whether its commercial/enterprise, community, and/or hobbyist, it's good for users to have options and we all benefit from the various contributions along the way.

Yeah, I carry a separate phone for work.

Hot take: The Snapdragon X PC's would have sold far better if they were pitched as the PC Apple Silicon counterpart instead of the all in on AI marketing. Better battery life with top performance and touting compatibility should have been a clear slam dunk. For strictly AI, there's not much of a compelling reason to buy it over a Ryzen. Microsoft entirely and completely failed to read the room. Qualcomm OEM vendors should tout #Bazzite gaming compatibility instead.

Here's a preliminary dump of public data from the National Institute of Health (NIH).
More on the way!

For some of you, this won't mean much. For some of you, this is some nightmare fuel.

The NCEI repo is by far and away the largest and more than all the others together, so if you skip that one you should be safe.

The amount reported in the web is less than the actual amount. I believe that's just the amount of the git data and not counting the unpacked files. It might be right at around a terabyte now, but there's a large push coming tonight that will put it well over that.

A thanks to everyone who's been linking to our publicdata rescue project! I keep seeing links to it show up in more and more places. The infrastructure its running on is local (not public cloud) and not tied to any NSF funding. That said, I encourage you to clone these repositories if you have plenty of disk space and an unmetered connection. More coming soon!

That's a great question. I'm curious what their browser would get me that Firefox doesn't? I might be willing to pay for a privacy focused search service (though I'm also generally liking DuckDuckGo), but pitching a proprietary browser doesn't sell well for me. "Trust us, but you can't verify" isn't a good pitch.

I'm a little intrigued by Kagi search but offput that their browser is proprietary and webkit based.

This week, I've been working on more #NOAA archiving. It's both large and incomplete. Please note that the actual repository data size is much larger than what it reports on the page for these repos.

This isn't the full archive and there's plenty more to come. Keep in mind that the size listed there is underrepresented. This is ~650GB so far. Unfortunately, the NCEI website has been spotty some this week, too.
I expect a full archive will easily exceed 1TB of data.

There's a massive amount of data there. I'm still working on it, but I've got hundreds of Gigs and it's nowhere close to finishing. Give me a couple of days.
