corruption is a feature of the system, not a bug. It might be a convenient excuse for a purge, but not a reason for it. My vote is on an ongoing power struggle.

the IT work I do has no trace of archaeology in it. Out of my friends who studied archaeology in the early 2000s maybe about 20% still work in the field full-time. The rest have switched to something else out of practical necessity.

yeah, archaeology is a tough field to get a living from. I was lucky and was able to make the switch to IT twenty years ago. Much less stress than I had fighting for the same jobs as everyone else while I was still doing excavation work.

for me english is like a second language: I learned it very early from role-playing games (Advanced Dungeons and Dragons to be exact) and I've used it professionally for 16 years. However, I'm in the same boat when it comes to Italian (which is mainly a hobby). I read a lot of italian literature and also do flashcards (Anki) for vocabulary. Every time I'm in Italy I notice that my spoken italian has improved. So practice is deifnitely they key.

yeah. Tracking, profiling and data gathering used to be "just for commercial reasons". But in the near future the Trump administration will almost certainly start using the same data to hunt down dissidents. All the "anti-american/christian is a terrorist" stuff paves the way for that.

most boomers don't actually know about them. My guess is that people who are, what, 35-50 years old used them in the past.

I've never read Paasilinna's novels, but I know they're very popular. Summer at a summer cottage next to a lake can be quite nice if the weather is warm and the count of blood-sucking insects stays at reasonable levels. That said, killing those insects can be a summer pastime in the worst case.

morning from a summer cottage in Längelmäki in Finland. Will do paid work on open source software, then try to relax a bit before heading back home. I actually had to check what ttrpg meant. Incredible that computer "RPG" games are so prevalent that you need prefix "table-top" when you talk about the real thing 😅. My favourite has always been Call of Cthulhu. I've always ended up being the dungeon/game master, so I have actually _played_ ttrpgs only a few time

there was actually a short period of 20 or so yearsat the beginning of Islam where muslims considered all abrahamic religions equally ok. This is obvious from some suras in the Quran where it speaks of jews, christians and muslims as "God's People" or such.
