Two tiny things I've started doing since the heatwaves became social small talk.
I use the phrase 'climate collapse'. Klimakollaps. Not climate change.
When anyone moans about the heat in isolation, as if it's just a rare hot day today, I mention the death toll and wonder aloud: 'What are we going to do about climate collapse?' Just to bring it into the conversation.
I know it's very Old Woman Yells At Climate Collapse. But it's just weird that we refuse to even mention it.

I never saw a single toot about Taylor Swift getting married. I didn't know she got married until I saw a photo on the national news broadcaster's website. I was away from Mastodon for a few hours today. Within minutes of logging back on, I knew Bonnie Tyler had died and was nodding in agreement at all the toots paying respects to that excellent singer. I feel this illustrates something about the Fediverse.

We tone-policed flight shame away so quickly. We made smoking socially unacceptable. Smokers still smoke and are free to smoke, but give you a slightly apologetic embarrassed grin as they sneak out to the smoking area. When someone says they've bought a holiday home in Spain and someone else says they're bringing the whole family to Thailand to celebrate their birthday, there are no apologetic grins and the social expectation is still that everyone else exclaims "Oh how lovely! Lucky you!"

37° heat is depressing. So is the way we’re dealing with climate collapse. The language we’re using, the excuses we’re making. Making heat records a game, excitedly watching to see if Number Goes Up. The news said the latest temperature had ‘ruined the chance of another new record’. And we all seem to agree that, conveniently, there’s no use in inconveniencing ourselves personally by consuming less or not flying until the day after every billionaire has given up their private jet.

I’ve sent and received letters since PostNord, the Danish postal service, stopped delivering letters. The courier company’s numerical code stamped on an envelope makes me wince every time. The loss of stamps really is a loss. Those lovely miniature artworks that wandered around in our everyday world, casually celebrating literature, science, culture, space, art, nature. Gone.

@nprofile…x9jp I can see that working in person-to-person contact. In online situations, I will just block if I get a bald question like 'can I ask you a question'. If I respond with anything, even just 'no', then I have engaged with them, which I will not do.

Strangers, purportedly men, sending a private message that just says 'do you mind if I ask you something?' or 'can I ask you a question?' Is this some new scam? I’ve just blocked my third in two days. I blocked them quicker than a reply guy on a 5000-character instance who lectured me about Linux, so I didn’t notice if the messages were all from the same server. The wording was similar but the profiles were different. Strange scam, if it is one. There were no dodgy links.

In September, I put in a purchase request for Enshittification at the library. In October, I was notified that Aarhus library now has it in stock. I reserved the audiobook. I just got a notification that it's ready for me to borrow. In one click, I have borrowed it. The library's simple, free, reader-oriented process is like the opposite of enshittification.

We need the opposite of a siesta for Northern latitudes in Winter. A go-esta. A few hours off in the middle of the workday when you go outside and do stuff in daylight. Because we go to work in the dark and come home in the dark 5 days a week. Saturday, we rush around doing stuff that needs to done in daylight. Sunday, you want to recharge. To read. To scroll. To nap. To relax indoors. But there's a few hours of sunshine so you feel obliged to go outside, dammit, before the next 5 dark days hit.

I have sympathy with people when they first arrive and haven't yet worked out how to connect. But my sympathy weakens when someone screams about 'screaming into the void' and hundreds of friendly voices from the void reply 'welcome!' and tell them about following people and hashtags, but the person continues to follow 0 people. Feels like they want to broadcast, not connect.

Digital coercion bothers me greatly. I avoid apps. I have a travel card & code generator. It bothers me that they nudge everyone towards the 2FA app and ticketing app. They don’t advertise the non-app solutions loudly. We shouldn’t do their work for them, telling each other that the non-app alternatives don’t exist. Then people will get the app, thinking they’ve no alternative, which makes it look like fewer people want non-app solutions, which makes it easier to justify downgrading them.

The word 'Vrede' jumped out at me from this 'Peace' installation. 'Vrede' is Danish for anger, fury, wrath. I wondered if it was an artistic provocation. But it seemed too confined to chance, that someone who happens to understand Danish happens to see this German artwork. So I looked it up and learned that 'vrede' is Dutch for 'peace'.
Vrede. Peace in Dutch. Wrath in Danish. I wonder if there's a word for words like these, that mean the opposite in different languages.

About 20 years ago, I saw an excellent rock. It was unusual, so I took a photo. But I couldn’t find the photo shortly afterwards and thought I’d deleted it by mistake. I was sad. I kept describing the rock to people, but they were strangely uninterested. I am clearing out my photo archive and I just found it. I am happy. I missed this rock. I thought of it often. I can show my rock to people now, whether they want to see it or not. You included.

If you think I had the social grace to not ask a Nobel laureate to sign a grubby worn 23-year-old paperback edition of one of his novels, then you have another think coming. He, on the other hand, had the social grace not to hesitate and just kindly signed both the new and the old book. And how beautifully he signed them too - the dying art of an aesthetic signature.

The city is developing the old Aarhus County Hospital into a mixed-use neighbourhood. It’s a huge area and project that will take years. Some existing buildings are in good shape so while work is ongoing, the council has turned one into a Youth Culture House and the chapel into a Chapel of Culture. One wing has habitable living quarters so the council has given these to young people in precarious living situations including LGBTQ+ youths who need a safe place. Fair play to the council.

People showed a generous interest in our new street that’s being rolled out like a carpet. A few people wondered about various details. My technical knowledge of the process starts and ends with ‘Hey! Look! They’re printing a cartoon road!’ But I passed it since when they weren’t working so I got some photos that show the machinery a bit closer. Just adding them here in case they’re of interest.

None of the sunsets or flowers I saw this week were as lovely as these ugly patches of tarmac. This is the old Aarhus County Hospital. The council is developing it into a mixed-use neighbourhood. While excavating, they discovered that 2 huge emergency generators in bomb-shelter operation rooms still work perfectly. So they dug them up, threw tarmac in the hole and donated them to Ukraine. Now they ensure electricity in a hospital in Odessa that had been plagued by power cuts.

@nprofile…fynq 'in comparison to so much locked-down crap we use, a bicycle *wants* to be fixed' - that's a great observation. It hadn't struck me but yes, there is almost nothing 'hidden' about an ordinary bike. On the rare occasion where there is a problem, I can name the problem when I walk into the bike shop. I can tell them it's the chain or the brake or a snapped spoke or whatever. I can't do that with most machines I own. I just know 'it's broken' but have no idea why or where.

I just realised how old my bike is and that made me realise how few parts I’ve ever had to repair or replace. A brake cable, once. A couple of spokes. A new saddle, but only because I wanted a different kind. And all hail its dynamo lamp - not only does it not need batteries, but it works faithfully, has never as much as blinked a single time in almost 20 years of use, and I have yet to replace the bulb. In the age of enshittification, this feels remarkable.

I rarely remember to feed you with oil and air. I fling you onto trains and into hedges and into any space you fit, or don’t. And yet you always work, cost little to maintain and nothing to run. And you give me easy exercise. And I will never be too old not to think Wheeee! as I freewheel you downhill.

@nprofile…s99s My one bit of How To-advice to a newcomer would be: follow hashtags and follow LOTS of people. When you join Mastodon, you walk into a café packed with people who are having lively conversations at many different tables. If you just go and sit in a corner by yourself without listening in on any conversations or nodding hello to anyone, then people won’t know you’re here. There’s no algorithm (and thank Odin for that) - you find and create your own community.

People in Europe who aren't from the US, but constantly issue social-media instructions to people in the US about what they should be doing (or scold them for what they’re not doing) – it can feel a bit hurler on the ditch. The fascists are a worldwide threat but you're in the thick of it. So I've no place saying this, yet will anyway: thank you to everyone who did a #HandsOff protest. It gives us all hope. And it got mainstream attention - first item on the national news here in Denmark today.

It’s not just the deluge of information we experience, it’s the wildly eclectic nature of it. The wildly different emotions we cycle through in seconds.

My favourite thing in the whole Fediverse is when I get a notification that someone has edited a toot I favourited or boosted months ago. Like, something in that toot has been bugging them for half a year. A comma that could've been a semi-colon. A spelling mistake they belatedly spotted. Some good information they wish they'd put in the Alt Text. And thanks to the magic of Mastodon, they can just fix it now, all these months later. I feel happy for them, knowing they can sleep soundly again.

A visitor from abroad was surprised to discover that you can borrow an electric cargo bike at the hardware store if you need to carry bulky stuff home.
The first two hours are free. After that, you pay 99 kr. (about €13) per hour. Another nice sign, I think, of the advantages of walkable, bikable cities.

A new-to-me Mastodon phenomenon: fake accounts with AI-glowy fake pictures of older white men whose bios typically mention their wives and children, their military service, and an instruction to God to bless America. I've just blocked my fourth in two days. It's so irritating and dull and unFediversy.

More than once, someone giving me (kindly meant!) advice on what I 'just' need to do has casually recommended that I use a 'spare laptop' while working out how to install the 117 mysterious software-thingies. It reminds me that we're on the same side, yet talking about enshittification in different languages. Lots of us don't have 'spare' computers or phones. We use computers like ovens or showers. They're functional everyday devices. If they don't work, we want a plumber, not to learn plumbing.

Many people just use their devices as tools to type words and use the internet. We aren't interested in or good at software. Spending hours of our leisure time learning how to set up and maintain something new or different on a computer is as interesting to us as unblocking drains or learning a sport we hate. Please let us moan about AI enshittification or express a wish for a Digital Deshittification subscription service without yelling 'do it yourself' and 'Linux!' at us every time.

I liked this wibbly-wobbly shadow but hesitated to share the photograph because I’ve nothing to say about it other than: “I saw a nice shadow.” Then I thought: this is the Fediverse. People are nice. They won’t mind if someone shares a shadow they saw. So here it is. I am going to tag this #Shadow

Another sign that a 15-minute city is a lively mixed-use place: a hardware store opened on a main city square in the shadow of the cathedral.
It's the kind of flagship space where you’d usually find a designer bag store. It rents drills, sack trolleys and tools by the hour. That can only make commercial sense when a city centre is not just for businesses and the rich, but for ordinary people living just around the corner in ordinary homes.

“It's absolutely fantastic that as a citizen, you come into an empty library and treat it so lovingly.”
Librarian’s remark after Göteborg Main Library was accidentally left unlocked at Halloween and 400 people wandered in. ‘People sat reading newspapers. There were families in the children's section and people looking books up in the database. 200 books were borrowed and nothing was damaged.’

Am winging it in my balcony garden. I expect everything to die and don’t know what to expect when something survives. So I’m in a puppy-like state of constant joy & surprise.
This delicate bloom has just emerged from a robust broad-leaved plant that I planted without catching its name. I didn’t know it flowered. The lovely leaves alone made me happy. The flower looks like no relation. It looks as if it wouldn’t even speak to them if it met them on the street.
