to be honest, i am kinda just not into the idea of even being staff on a mastodon instance anymore. this is no longer "fun" to me.
for example, two people got into a fight yesterday -- a local user got into a fight with a remote user that went *very* sideways.
what does that have to do with me? well, a fucking fediblock post was made specifically tagging *me* into the fight, a fight that i had absolutely nothing to do with, in order to pressure me into taking the side of the remote user.
so then what happens? i get blocked by a bunch of people for no reason. the instance gets blocked by a bunch of instances for no reason.
i am sick and tired of it. i am probably going to just move to my own personal GTS instance or hachyderm or something.
but to be absolutely clear: I *do not* run the day to day affairs of treehouse anymore, and haven't in a long time. it has been run by a collective for the past 18 months.

If you are on Alpine edge and have testing packages enabled, you can install capsudo from there and then start the capsudo service.
If you want password authentication, use the capsudo-pwauth service which will challenge the capsudo client to provide your password, otherwise there is no authentication at all.
the tl;dr: capsudo is essentially sudo, but done with object capabilities instead of an SUID binary.
My blog last month explains the theory side of it and how you can use object capabilities to stitch all sorts of interesting things together without the need of a complex policy engine.
Part 2 of the series will land sometime this weekend... and then finally after that we will get to the chapter the Hacker News and Lobsters people wanted to skip to after that.
If someone wants to send me the bits to make this all work with systemd, that would also be great, but as I don't use systemd, I would have to otherwise guess.

I was recently looking at Framework for a new x86 laptop, as I believed the company to be reasonably aligned with my values (e.g. pro-repair, pro-FOSS, pro-humanity). But others have warned me that they are now supporting Hyprland, Omarchy, etc. They support these projects led by people who hold alt-right views, in the name of building a “big tent” coalition.
The problem, however, is that building a “big tent” coalition, by design, requires some form of value alignment.

as part of the talk that i am giving about #pkgconf in about a month, i am trying to track the evolution of the pc(5) file format.
for example, in early pkg-config, these were just shell scripts that were somewhat similar to the old gnome-config module concept.
but, while i have pkg-config 0.1.0, i don't have any versions between 0.2.0 and 0.11 (which uses the basic format we are used to today). it would be nice if i could find those versions, so i could demonstrate the capabilities of the shell script version at its peak.
does anyone have them somewhere?

wrapped up my talk about #wayback at @nprofile…kt36 about an hour ago.
i think i’ve accomplished my goal with it: to spark a conversation on how to get the missing pieces filled in. in the Q&A a few interesting paths were identified to investigate, hopefully the hallway conversations will be similarly insightful.
my dream is to be able to come back next year and say that legacy X has been fully superseded by wayback. i feel like we are close to solving the puzzle.

there's definitely a gazillion bugs, which will need work across the entire stack to solve.

I've placed a security hold on Xlibre in Alpine, for a number of reasons that basically sum up to an unproven reactionary project whose code runs with elevated privilege (such as direct hardware access) is extremely high risk for introducing security-related regressions.
I do think a fork of X is a good idea, but that fork needs to be focused on sustainability: it should be focused on the generic drivers (such as modesetting for video and libinput for input), and there needs to be a real documented plan for maintenance and triage of security vulnerabilities.
Right now, I don't see that. Instead I see a fork of every component of X, including all of the hardware-specific drivers, and people complaining about politics.
This does not inspire confidence that the fork will not introduce security regressions, or worse, fail to import security patches from X.org.
For those reasons, at least for now, the security hold will remain indefinitely. We can reevaluate after the project has had time to mature (and hopefully start focusing on the fundamentals rather than wild proclamations about being "anti-DEI").

i've written a lot of software over my lifetime, and released the majority of it as free software, because i just wanted to be helpful.
there was no point in hoarding it, and releasing it as free software allowed for others to take it and do whatever they wanted with it. sometimes, they send their improvements back to me. great!
well, not so much with corporations. pkgconf, for example, is in basically *every* major corporation's toolchain.
to make pkgconf scale for these corporations, and their complex DAGs, we had to rewrite the solver. fine, i suppose. some of that work was even sponsored, which is nice.
but the reality is that there are a few utilities in this world that exist in the critical path of basically every corporation. tools like pkgconf, curl, etc. if these tools break because corporations use them in new ways, generally we don't get help with fixing them, but we are expected to.
this position is what leads to critical libraries like libxslt being abandoned, and the same maintainer adopting a laissez-faire security policy for libxml2.
