@nprofile…egn4, I wasn't saying there shouldn't be alt text when there's multimedia, but rather not manufacture situations requiring it, i.e. don't post media whose content is entirely textual. BTW the content of the alt attribute is unstructured and nonnavigable, so do put long description (more than one paragraph, with formatting like lists) in the post body and use the alt text like what it's designed for, short description.

Hint to people that selfhosting is possible and simple, and consider having a list of public servers that people can sign up to rather than only ever talking about matrix.org itself.
@nprofile…pkrl, Dept of Ping is still a thing in This Week in Matrix, but indeed it's not as well advertised as we wish it to be (development blog is exactly the sort a user should never need to read).
If Matrix was lightweight to host, much like an XMPP server or similar, I'd gladly selfhost a version, but it is not, and as far as I can tell, there's no interest from Matrix devs to make the selfhosting experience and resource requirements more acceptable.
@nprofile…v06p and I are operating a Dendrite (whose development is unfortunately frozen, practically) homeserver and it along with PostgreSQL (which is also used for other things) takes up under 500 MB of memory. Not as light as XMPP, but enough to be accommodated by any SBC or VPS.
Sure, a globally distributed database doesn't scale as well as a message relayer, but as long as the participated room count and traffic is low (which is the use case for private messaging), hosting as a Matrix homeserver is not that expensive. To maintain that, though, you'd need regular rotation of recommendation for onboarders. I have a feeling that socially organizing this (maintaining a list of small servers open for registration that is also reliable enough to not ruin someone's first impression) is rather difficult.

The meme about Linux being difficult to set up was probably definitely not about installing GNU or GNU-like distributions, but Android.
In the last decade I've install over a dozen of free operating systems on four different architectures, many times on a chroot, and bootstrapping has always been a single step. A child could do it. How do I know? I was something of a child meself.

@nprofile…5k85, is the current version of @nprofile…e0ug in mainline @nprofile…jep7? I see su.xash.husky 1.2.2's build failing to reproduce but that was released mid-2022 (sorry don't remember when you started to take over the maintenance).
