Yes. It can be used without network capabilities.
The software works with an ethernet connection using a USB on-the-go adapter and USB ethernet adapter, and that's how I do development.
Unfortunately, there is a mechanical limitation that prevents the models that I make over ethernet. The connector for the LCD screen blocks access to the USB micro port.
If you go without a screen, you could use an USB ethernet adapter.
It'd be pretty weird to have a thermostat with no UI and it'd put you in a weird situation where a network outage would stop you from adjusting the thermostat, but it's doable.
In summary you've got three options for a WiFi-free HestiaPi:
- dumb thermostat
- screenless thermostat
- DIY hardware and using the HestiaPi software
By default the pi will serve up a wifi access point for the initial setup, but if you hop on the community forums, we can help you disable that.

Honestly, it might be a win for the owners in terms of #privacy. But if they want a wifi enabled thermostat that is open source and will never abandon them like this, please suggest a #HestiaPi.

Thanks for helping spread the good word. There's no ads for HestiaPi, no marketing budget, no sponsoring podcasts... just everyday people like you telling others.
I'd much rather give people a lower price and have word of mouth advertising than charge more and have a marketing budget.
The grassroots style fits with who I am, and I am NOT a startup founder, going into debt get explosive growth. I want something sustainable, not an exit strategy. If it limits my impact, so be it.

What's especially messed up about the Google Nest thing is that these are thermostats people paid $100+ for and they own them. They shouldn't get the rug pulled out from under them like this.

Customers should be able to expect that their thermostats will work as well as they did when they bought it. At a bare minimum, Google should release the server side source code so people can run their own server to maintain the ability to connect to their thermostat over wifi.

Once the current batch of components arrive, I plan on running the numbers to see if I can make a permenent price reduction.
I've been getting killed on shipping prices, but ordering in larger quantities helps mitigate that.
The other persistent problem is finding components in stock within 5-10% of the regular price. Building out a bigger inventory helps here too.
I'm optimistic. My goal is to get down to $150. Stretch goal is to hit $129.99 (the same price as Google's cheapest Nest)

I'm about to place an order for $700 in thermostat components. Weee.
Stocking up like this always makes me a little nervous. What if people stop caring about open source thermostats? What if I just spent all this money on parts that will just sit on my shelf?
On the flip side, what if I don't buy these parts? Then nobody can buy a pre-assembled HestiaPi, which means anyone isn't willing & able to make their own gets left behind.

What can be done about the #OpenSource world to make things more #sustainable?
The biggest thing, by far, is to make things as simple as possible! That means you will inherently have fewer dependencies.
Depend on libraries that have long term support.
Contribute upstream whenever possible. Mainly code, but if you are selling #hardware, money too.

Here are some lesser known differences between an open source #IoT project and a commercial IoT appliance:
1. Support - #OpenSource projects field questions. Actual humans, taking the time to understand your questions and answer them!
2. Repair - Again, people will help you fix things
3. Less #environmental impact - Fewer things ending up in the landfill on account of the repairability, often times they have more localized production, less shipping, etc.
4. Customizability - that's something rarely found in commercial offerings

I'm not super interested in posting to 99 experimental platforms that doesn't even work well, let alone have the potential customers browsing the marketplace.

Today I begin the journey of automatically building a #HestiaPi image based on #Debian 12 (#bookworm). So far I discovered:
1.) #RaspberryPi no longer automatically expands the partition & filesystem to take up the entire disk
2.) my /boot/ssh file **did** turn on SSH, but it seems takes longer to start and IIRC my detection can't wait for the console message because on older systems it wasn't echoed to the screen 🤔
Running `sudo raspi-config --expand-rootfs` does work, but it auto-reboots 🫤

It's really just the sound. I don't like the noise, but some people find the click to be satisfying.
The story behind the clicky edition was that Omron discontinued the solid state relays we were using and so they kept getting harder to find as retailers sold out. The clicky version was created so we wouldn't be relying on this hard-to-find part.
It was also supposed to be cheaper, because the traditional relays are about 25% the price of the silent ones, and that adds up to about a $16 difference. However the clicky version required an extra 20 surface mounted components which ad up and make assembly take longer, so it didn't actually save any money and actually took more time. If they were made in huge quantities and assembled by robots, the clicky version might still be cheaper. At any rate, there was no parts availability problem.
Later, I found a perfect replacement for the solid state Omron relays, made by Panasonic. That resolved the parts availability problem, and now we have 2 models.
So there you have it, the legend of the clicky edition. 🙂

Happy to say that the #HestiaPi clicky edition is back in stock.
I put together 5 units yesterday. I have to wait for some #RaspberryPi boards, temperature sensors and screens to come in before I can fully test each unit, but if someone ordered one today I could mix and match parts from the silent model that I have ready to go.
It feels good to have built up this level of inventory. I want to keep giving people a choice of #sustainable, #upgradable, #OpenSource #hardware!

Oof. Design problem. I don't know what I was going off of when I designed this board the first time (probably SparkFun?) but it's way different than what's in the datasheet.
So those boards are trash and I'll have to try to salvage the components. Even worse, the stencil is also garbage.
On the flipside, the new revision uses two fewer resistors and the board is even smaller now. I think I'll hold off on getting a stencil this time until I have a working prototype.

I just got some new #HestiaPi prototype boards in. There is only acouple small modifications:
1. The reset switch cuts power, makong it compatible with a Pi Zero, Pi Zero 2, and possibly also the pi zero clones
2. Require a sockrt for the pi, and can use headers soldered onto the top instead of requiring them onnthe bottom
3. Done in KiCAD instead of some online tool (eliminating the risk of not being able to modify the PCB if the site ever goes under or discontinued their free tier, etc.)
The next question is: does it actually work? The components I'll need to test it should arrive in the next few days and then we will find out.

After that, I'll be waiting on parts to be available at reasonable prices (namely the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W).
I can use the original Zero, and they are available, but the Zero 2 is significantly faster and has a hardware Floating Point Unit (FPU) which is required for the JVM in Java >8

It was designed to be the central hub for all home automation, allowing people to integrate all their other IoT devices with the HestiaPi. So you could have heat turn off if no motion was detected inside, blinds close if the temperature outside is drastically different than inside, or whatever crazy logic you want based on the gear you have.
Also, it was created over 5 years ago, when the ESPs were not as popular or well supported as they are today, and the rPi pico didn't exist.
However, we do have an effort to make an ESP32 based model (Called Hestia32) with very limited functionality. It'd just allow control via wifi and a screen to use it locally. No interaction with other #IoT gear, no ability to add complex logic with a few lines of javascript.
The goal is to allow people to have this cheap option if they don't need anything fancy, but if they do have the HestiaPi, they can work together and you can do the fancy stuff. Help wanted, in case you want to join in. 🤓

I think people underestimate how much it costs to get a PCB made if they've never done it.
For example, I have a 3.54" x 2.83" board (2 layers) and I want one of these made to make sure my design is good. How much would you expect to pay?

Bad luck this week. Yesterday it was a defective pi, today it was a short circuit in a power converter! It damaged a PCB (whose trace acted like a fuse), but I was able to repair that
Normally it takes like 30 minutes to build one unit, but these two have taken well over 2 hours on account of all the troubleshooting and re-work that had to be done.
I don't expect bad components, so the first thing I look for are mistakes that I made. Maybe those days are behind me and I should check parts now?

Corporate IoT is likely only going to last about 3 years. They don't have an incentive to build things that last longer than that. That's capitalism. It's more profitable to sell a customer a new unit every few years.
Meanwhile, the open source community is incentivized by making cool things that put users in control. They're not in it for the profit motive. They want to have nice things and give others the opportunity to also have nice things. And part of our definition of "nice" means it respects people's privacy, lasts a long time, is repairable, and is upgradable.
We still have to follow the laws of economics to be sustsinable, but it's a night and day difference in terms of priorities.

The main thing slowing down adoption of open source smart thermostats is that people don't know they exist.
The #HestiaPi has is about the same price as the Google Nest was, and having been around for 5 years, we've already outlived most of Google's products!
If you like the idea of having technology that isn't run by a mega-corp, isn't harvesting your data, doesn't require their cloud to operate and doesn't get discontinued, please spread the word about HestiaPi.
We are so unstoppable, neither the founder nor myself could shut it down even if we wanted to! That's what open source brings to the table!

Today I tried to help move the #Proxmox provider for #terraform a little closer to a stable release. It wasn't much, but I think it helped.
I also am trying to help get instructions to compile the #AirGradient One #firmware from source. If I can get people to reproduce the behavior I'm seeing, I am hopeful that we can get this nailed down. I'm keen on getting familiar with this because it is #ESP32 based, and we want to make an ESP32 based model of #HestiaPi

I've managed to get some Pi Zero 2 W boards in stock, but if you want to use the one you already have, I can ship you one without a pi.
There's a bit of a gotcha with using your own pi zero though: if it's going to be replaceable, the headers need to be on the back of the board for the silent version of the HestiaPi, and the front with the clicky version.
Removing the headers and putting them on the other side is possible, but it's tedious, so it's best to just make sure to get the one that matches.

I'm going to be restocking on parts soon. I batch up orders to save on shipping and I do it by vendor to try to spread out my costs.
I've managed to build up a decent inventory of the inexpensive stuff, but screens, power converters and Pi Zeros are all low.

I'm sure evels will rise over time, but considering I only sell one unit every couple months, it's going to be a while. I don't have the time to run a whole advertising campaign or anything like that.

I think I may have found the pogo pin I have been looking for. This is super exciting because it will allow me to build #HestiaPi #thermostats with a #RaspberryPi Zero 2 W AND still have a functional reset button on the side.
Currently, I can build units with the Zero 2, but there's no way to reset it. Instead, you have to flip the breaker to the furnace/air conditioning to power cycle it (assuming you can't access the web interface for some reason). While this isn't the end of the world, it's nice to be able to reboot easily when necessary.

If there are missing features (and they aren't already on the community's list), let me know and I can add them.
I also have ideas about some amazing features that have never been in any commercial thermostat. For example: invite the living room to a calendar event and the thermostat will have access to the "living room account" so it can see who is going to be there, look up each person's temperature preferences, figure out the most energy efficient temperature that would meet everyone's stated requirements, and then automatically turn on heating/cooling ahead of time so the room will be the appropriate temperature with minimal energy usage (e.g. stage 1 heating/cooling) by the time the event starts.
I haven't talked about these types of features much in public because I simply do not have enough free time to implement things like that yet. I will though, if for no other reason than "I personally want these features!"
Boring features like "scheduling" will come first, of course.

I'm doing my taxes and I found that I'm only about $115 in the hole over the past 3 years for my efforts to make #HestiaPi #thermostats available to people!
This is good news because I've spent thousands of dollars on this project, so it feels really good to be almost there.

Wow, this one person is just being a complete ASS of the #Proxmox issue tracker lately. He just refuses to provide a simple example that illustrates the issue he claims to be having and then repeatedly insinuates that the problem is me not understanding terraform or being a bad communicator or using philosophical jargon like "simple example".
It's like... look man, I'm a contributor to the Proxmox provider for #Terraform, the project that you are posting your issue to, and I spend hours every week helping people out. I'm pretty sure I can read a terraform file.
The point is that I don't want to go through your complex production code which has a bunch of hardcoded things that I need to change to repro your issue, and a bunch more code that is not even related to your issue. But he absolutely refuses to meet me part way.
So I'm stepping away for a bit. I don't need that toxicity in my life. 🖕

2. Please provide enough info for others to recreate the issue as easily as possible
3. If someone who is trying to help you tells you that your issue is separate from the one you commented on, and asks that you create a different issue to track that different bug, please just do it without any snide remarks
We're all volunteers here. None of us get paid for our time and effort. And we are on your side, so please try to work with us. Because eventually, our patients will wear out and we'll either snap at you, ignore your posts, or both.

Got a report about hardware not working when the person received it. I tested it after I built it, but maybe it got damaged in shipping?
The customer gave amazing debugging information and I was able to provide a workaround in my first resoonse. After getting his second message, I think we narrowed down the issue to either a bad sensor or a bad i2c controller on the pi.
I've never had troubleshooting go so smoothly.
I'm also planning on updating the troubleshooting section of the owner's manual. That way people can be more self-sufficient, and also get help after I pass away.

#Selfhosting people who use #Proxmox, I'm a contributor to the terraform provider for proxmox and I need your help. Please boost.
I'd like to get access to several Proxmox servers for testing purposes. This will let me determine which issues are specific to particular versions of Proxmox and allow us to do regression testing.
Why? As you may know, there's no way to downgrade Proxmox. So if I upgraded to 8.1, I could no longer test compatibility with 7.4 or 8.0. I can't afford to buy, let alone operate 3 test servers, which is why I'm asking for your help. Lets divide up the burdon by letting me focus on software development and testing, while others in the community provide servers to test against.
I'd strongly prefer that these be dedicated test servers because I'm going to be throwing i untested code against them (by definition). But if you trust Proxmox permissions to keep me in my little area and not mess up your production VMs, that's up to you. It should work, but I err on the side of safety.

I'm trying to change this "self-hosting is hard" claim (and often reality). I believe part of it is that people only use the term "self-hosted" when something is also conplex and difficult to set up.
For example, people don't call is a #SelfHosted hard drive, or synology. It's just a hard drive (or several).
The #HestiaPi is an open source wifi enabled thermostat. I don't call it "self hosted" although it absolutely is. My choice of words isn't some clever marketing ploy, it's just what I think of naturally.
I guess where I am headed with this is that I'd encourage anyone who is promoting the idea that people run their own servers think about how much knowledge and how many skills are involved. Can it be made simpler and still be useful?
I've seen some people do this with full bitcoin nodes that are plug and play, and I think that's great! I want to see more things like that.
Simple, turnkey solutions are what we should be producing. Even the people that have the skills to troubleshoot some server software probably don't *want* to spend their time doing do. So design things that are #resilliant and #simple. So fellow #builders, give me a "heck yeah" if you're with me!

I'm working on making the #HestiaPi case have stand offs for the PCB.
This will cause the PCB to be straight and a specific distance from backplate. Currently, the distance is dictated by the length of the tails on the header pins, which also makes the board sit at an angle.
This change will enable 4 identical screws to hold things in place (as opposed to being a combination of whatever fits).
If successful, it will make the parts list much better and allow me to stock fewer parts.
