Holy fucking shit AI is causing heaps of problems in the botanical identification world. Northwest floral had an incredible id tool where you could type in various subspecies of a plant and it would give you side by side comparisons in minute details. They've turned it off because of ai bot scraping. Jepsons eflora now makes you take a math test to prove you are human. Kew went to blank pages, This is a fucking nightmare. Grass ID is hard, it can be incredibly confusing and now because of fucking AI my life has become harder. I am proud of botanical sites standing up to ai .... But shit #fuckAi

Then there are these fascinating cases of rapid evolution, like elephants being born tuskless to survive poaching. The world is a mysterious place.

The undamming of the Klamath River is an amazing success story, it's healing faster than anyone expected. A group of kids from local tribes are the first to kayak the entire river. It was a month long journey, including through unknown rapids, a 2.5 mile class IV rapid canyon with steep basalt walls.

It actually happens quite a bit but without tragic endings tho often scary. I read an article of stories about people led astray by car GPS taking them the shortest rt. ending up on narrow dirt rds in the middle of nowhere, and they can't turn around. Finding themselves in pot grows, lost in the desert. Even in cities gps takes people through sketchy areas of town that locals avoid. Also finding themselves lost in a canyon or dense tree cover where GPS has no signal. It is not a perfect science.

There's been many horror story cases now of people being led astray on remote roads with car GPS, that's how that couple got stranded in winter in Oregon and the husband died tryna ng to get help.. Gps told them it was the quickest route.

I still use paper maps, I like to see the whole route layed out at once, not scrolled bit by bit , on a tiny screen. I always carry a paper topo map while hiking and backpacking, so many remote places don't have cell service, I carry a compass too. When the grid goes down people will literally be lost😂

My friend and I went for a hike around the community park. When we got back to the parking lot,we could hear the pitiful wailing of a dog in distress across the river. The dog was half way down a cliff and couldn't go up or down. One guy drove around to the top of the cliffs and knocked on doors , seeing if anyone was missing a dog. A lady posted about the dog on a town FB page, and people started showing up, though we had trouble seeing where the dog was. The hero of the day was the man who waded the fast moving, freezing cold river, he got most of the way across the then hit a deep part and got soaked. It was sunset and freezing cold. He climbed the cliff and found the puppy. In the meantime 6 Calfire guys, and the town fire department, with three big trucks, and one small truck showed up. The puppy savior carried the shivering shaking puppy back across the river. Puppy was reunited with her person. A story with a happy ending!
