It actually happens quite a bit but without tragic endings tho often scary. I read an article of stories about people led astray by car GPS taking them the shortest rt. ending up on narrow dirt rds in the middle of nowhere, and they can't turn around. Finding themselves in pot grows, lost in the desert. Even in cities gps takes people through sketchy areas of town that locals avoid. Also finding themselves lost in a canyon or dense tree cover where GPS has no signal. It is not a perfect science.
