to be perfectly honest when someone claims code has no "feel" i know i can safely ignore anything else they say

2026-07-18 15:04:30 UTC

the argument is that nobody cares about the code that makes software work, only the results. if you pile slop on top of slop for long enough, i can guarantee that your software will reek of slop and your customers will be able to smell it, and reject it just like they did with the other failed use cases

2026-07-18 14:57:31 UTC

"actually its fine if agentic code is unmaintainable for humans because the agents will just maintain it" is just the next cope in a long series of copes from LLM true believers who said they were going to revolutionize customer support, summaries, art, writing and video, all of which they failed at
genAI is a dead-end technology that creates output without intention that is practically useless. the only reason it hasn't failed yet is because of the trillions pumped into it by business idiots

2026-04-28 13:27:07 UTC

i really think people need to understand what revenue is. if i promise to pay people 20 euros if they give me 5, and 100,000 people take me up on it, my revenue is legitimately 500,000 euros
my operating expenses however are 2 million and my losses are 1.5 million

power efficiency literally doesn't matter if your program spends 95% of its time sleeping until the next frame

i'll admit i haven't tried it in the last 10 years but i'm pretty sure pushing a single quad to the gpu at a time runs way worse than blitting a single sprite on the cpu at a time on a single core because the last time i tried that naive approach that was the outcome
and yes of course the gpu is way more efficient with even a little bit of data organization but if your frame is taking a fraction of a millisecond to draw who gives a shit?

2026-04-24 08:01:25 UTC

- reply

like, batching is the devil. you know what doesn't have to batch? the CPU. you tell it to do thing, and shockingly it just immediately does thing
also, wanna do a readback of your framebuffer? no problem! it's just memory! reading it is as cheap as writing it! no synchronization required, no gpu stalls involved

2026-04-24 07:53:12 UTC

RE: https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@eniko/116455660335531694
for You Have Died i'm just using software blitting between a front and back buffer held in CPU memory. and it really drives home how doing graphics on the CPU is easily an order of magnitude less complex than having to go through a GPU to do it
just jiggle the bytes around a bit and there's your result!
to be honest i'm starting to think using the GPU for simple low res 2D indie games is a mistake

snprintf can safely format a string into a target buffer
it can also, without writing anything, tell you the size needed to safely format a string into a target buffer
however, this being C, there is (as far as i can find) no helper method to use snprintf to find the size of the buffer you need, allocate it, and then write the formatted string, unless you make it yourself
this is great since writing a wrapper function like this is extremely easy to fuck up, leading to buffer overruns

Can't believe this is actually news in 2026 when I distinctly remember a scientist talking about seeing covid shred heart muscle fiber cells literally in March 2020 on twitter. Which was the point where I decided I would try my best to never get this disease
Are we just going to keep "rediscovering" how bad covid is every few years while doing jack shit about it?

kitsune tails is 33% off on steam and itch.io! https://kitsunegames.com/kitsunetails
an award winning gay fox girl platformer sitting at overwhelmingly positive with 800 reviews on steam, in this economy? it's more likely than you think!

for some reason sales were shockingly bad this month, so we could really use some support to help me and my partner cover our basic cost of living
even a few dollars helps us not fall behind as badly

Maybe since smart TVs need RAM and storage the shortage will bring back dumb TVs

Welp. Bedroom TV is dying. Which is something I can't afford to replace, but I need it for my sleep hygiene and mental health so I guess we're replacing it anyway
I hate piece of shit "smart" TVs

people keep talking about the shortages like "in the future you'll only be able to rent a computer in the cloud" and i just want to be clear about the fact that i would rather fucking die

we're sitting on two broken high end laptops (mobo failure) and i've started thinking maybe we should sell the old sticks of DDR4 RAM for rent money :|
