Edit: My previous fix of ByeDoom isn't working on other channels. I'm flummoxed. Maybe it's time to just go back to (only) books. The internet sucks too much of life anyway.

I'm trying to reduce #YouTube time, which for me means using an RSS reader to check my favorite channels rather than going to YouTube directly. By doing this I reduce distractions (and #RSS is glorious anyway).
I used to be able to just put the channel URL into #NetNewsWire and it would pick it up, but that doesn't seem to work now. I found instructions for how to use Command-F to find the channel ID in the page source, but that didn't work either. I've tried a few other things (adding /feeds/video.xml to the URL) and no luck.
In another weird twist: I already have some YouTube channel feeds in my reader. They're updating normally. But if I copy that feed's url and put it into my browser window? It says YouTube can't find the feed. What the heck?
Has anyone had luck following YouTube channels with RSS?

The poor dogs are now dealing with a thunderstorm! The humans are obviously fine but Finnegan can't figure out why we aren't more upset! Zoe (the Labrador) is doing fine too, lol. A big boom hit and I had to move from my chair to the couch so the little guy can be in my lap. Poor Finn! I can feel his heart beating against my leg.

Kobo(dot com) has eReaders that work great and so far they haven't gotten weird about what you can do with any old readers. My oldest one is going on 9 years old and has been passed down to my kid, who uses it daily.
Additionally, you can still break the DRM of Kobo books easily in Calibre. You don't need Amazon for literally anything book-related at this point. Every eBook I own (around 4k at this point?) is FREE. They are mine. It's still possible to do this. (If an author only sells on Amazon, well, that's a choice they made.)
Audiobooks? There's libro.fm, which lets you download unlocked files. All your current "locked" Audible books? You can easily break the locks on all of those too. My audiobooks are all free.

I’m in a bad fibromyalgia crash, but am dressed and able to gently walk around, and it’s a GORGEOUS day so we went to drop some things off at the local charity, then got some coffee.
It’s only taken half a century but I’m finally feeling in my bones the link between “gee I hate things being so cluttered,” and “gee that looks fun, surely I can fit one more hobby/item/appliance into our lives.” These days I’m acquiring much less, and when it does feel right to add something, I’m eyeballing its general footprint and then trying to get rid of at least a couple things that match it.
Last night I pulled a pile of coats out of the closet to go through them, and Cal immediately found his nap spot on them and began putting biscuit holes in my rain poncho.

For years I have been affectionately teased for my love of notebooks and stationary. Which is FINE, families gonna fam, I dish out all that I take, rest assured.
But an hour ago Jupiter was like, “You know, I really want to start cooking, and have a notebook where I put recipes,” and I was on it like white on rice. Here, want to check out my blank notebook collection and pick one? They did. Want to use my corner cutter to round all the corners? They did. Want to use my rainbow of index cards and specialized hole punch to make colored notes for your sections? Want this cute food-themed washi tape? Want me to write up tonight’s soup recipe? YES!
They were just standing at the kitchen table, putting their notebook together using all my stuff, and they’re like, “Mom! This is so cool! You’re so magical!” And I’m standing there with the gazillion-watt glow of my decades-long niche nerdy obsession saving the day, and being loudly recognized and appreciated about it. 😂

On the way home from the store today, I had to pause in the middle of the street right before our house, to let a pair of mallards cross the street. It’s so cute to me how the squirrels and crows will jet out of the way of cars, lightning fast. But the ducks see the car and just increase waddle speed by about 2%, like, “YES, LADY, WE SEE YOU.”
Then we got home and a hawk was circling overhead. I love living near a river with lots of woods and wildlife (and still have access to good coffee).

I'll make a blog post later where I can outline, at length, all the reasons I love this thing. But for now, here's my new Brompton G-Line Electric. The size and maneuverability have by themselves removed several levels of friction from just getting out the door and riding. I've been out twice today.
I named her (because of course I did) Mistress Basil Ayea Anouk Goesfarthington. Bea, for short.
Basil: a whimsical nod to her London birthplace
Ayea: a play on Aye, which is "yes", and I want the answer to "should I ride my bike?" to always be AYE.
Anouk: an inheritance from my first green Brompton C-Line, named Anouk, which I never should have sold (<hand solemnly over heart> I shall not make that mistake again)
Goesfarthington: And so she shall

Second shingles shot acquired! I'm now home.
We stopped to get coffee on the way home and at this one place they always ask what you're doing, not how's your day or nice sunny weather we're having (which is lovely and worth commenting on), but very pointed questions like, "Where you coming from?" And if you say the store, they'll ask you what you got, and on and on. Basically an introvert's worst nightmare. But banger coffee, so.
Greg replies, "A doctor's appointment," and I was all set to have them ask why and for me to say I was born with my dead twin enclosed in my ribcage and I just had her removed, her name is Ivy, you know, because I'm Hollie and also she's kinda parasitic though lovely....."
...but they didn't ask anything else.

I cleaned all my Sailor fude pens today and just a note for other Sailor pen fans, the converter comes totally apart. So convenient! Completely unscrews and you can get to and clean (and dry!) every single piece. I've been using these for years and didn't realize until today (I user several other converter brands and this is the first one I've seen that has this feature).
Also: those cheap sonic eyeglass cleaner tanks are gold for cleaning fountain pen bits.

About a year ago I started dumping dirty paint water (watercolors! not acrylics or oils) into my houseplants, and holy cats they absolutely love it. My rubber plant (closest to my desk and so a frequent recipient) was so spindly and sad before this, and now it's taller than I am and has been furiously making new leaves all winter.

The resting from being online has been helping! I have been working on my website but that feels like working on a little art project, not "online" exactly.
I'm careful with news, as much as is possible. My main practice is to put Heather Cox Richardson or Jamelle Bouie on headphones, and do gentle puttering while I listen.
I've had a couple really good days. I built a personal scoring system to help me track progress and it's helping me see what works and what doesn't.
Rest is good!

A person just walked by in sturdy shoes, a face mask, and a backpack with a protest sign sticking up out of the back. They walked with purpose and resolve (heading toward the nearby transit station to get downtown, I assume), and it was all I could do not to run out and thank them for protesting.

Hey hey #artist friendos, I like to note when I get great customer service (in this age of increasingly icky corporate interactions), and I just had a wonderful exchange with Jade from Toms Studio. She helped me with a problem I was having and offered great solutions.
A couple years ago I switched from using Microns to their refillable Lumos pen, and love it. I just got their pocket fountain pen with the Architect nib, and it's WONDERFUL.

Do you have a favorite blurring app for iOS or Mac OS? I'd like to post more of my art, but much of it lives in art journals with personal journaling. I'd like an easy way to blur the often very-irregularly-shaped sections of text.
I'm using Skitch here, it seems to have worked okay but it bulked it up to a 20 MB png, yowza. Are there better options?

The deeply #neurodivergent wish for there to be some kind of social signal or hand gesture (or emoji, in text) to add to a question, signaling that one is sincerely asking for understanding about something (that is maybe obvious to others), in a way that means, "Explain this to me like I'm from another planet. I'm not trolling, mocking, or playing the wise ass (despite past data, lol)."
Maybe I just learn the ASL for "earnest" and then insert that when needed. And hope it catches on. :)

Went to breakfast this morning, we haven't been out in ages and we were hoping it would be mostly empty, and it was!
Jupiter drew in their sketchbook, I doodled in mine - I've started folding over a few pieces of watercolor paper and sticking them in my Traveler's Notebook, and then it creates a signature to bind a book together later. I still love making books but (maybe weirdly) I like to make them as I need them.

I dunno if anyone remembers this but about six months ago my friend Katie adopted a “failed” bomb sniffing dog named Ethos. She had been exited from the program because she didn’t like loud noises. (No joke)
She and Katie became immediate best friends and now Ethos enjoys a life of endless treats, cuddles, and gets to take nose work classes (at which she totally excels).
Anyway, Merry Christmas from the cutest career-changing Labrador in the South!🎄

Hey hey friends who get #migraines, can you please share your favorite tips? I seem to be getting a new condition, lolsob. I think it's likely hormonal (i.e. peri/menopause).
Right now things that help are: sometimes caffeine (sometimes that backfires), Tylenol (Advil does little), that headache music I mentioned before, getting off screens and away from bright lights and noise, rest, or VERY gentle movement (like slow zen-walking around the house).
What works for you? (boosts welcome!)

Had to run an errand today that involved navigating what I consider to be one of the worst intersections in the city - it's between two shopping areas and just slow and clogged and everyone is always grumpy.
Two people were standing OUT IN THE RAIN, making giant bubbles that would float into the intersection and interact with everyone. It was total magic.

All I want is a few acres of forest and spaces for my favorite people to each have a tiny home. And paths that go between the houses. Far enough so you aren’t looking in but close enough so that evening Rummy games and impromptu 80’s dance parties can happen organically.
Also the paddock for the rescued horses. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of those.
I know I mention this every few months but it’s because I really want it to happen and maybe if I keep mentioning it, it will.

AuDHD and dyscalculia are a difficult mix when knitting. Following a regular pattern can be stressful, I tend to lose my place easily.
So I used @npub1rld…yspy to fix it! I put my favorite sock pattern into a template that, when printed, fits perfectly into my Traveler's Notebook that's always with me. Only the numbers for my size (so I don't mistake other sizes for mine). Checkboxes so I always know exactly where I'm at.

I’ve been organizing music today, into static playlists for use with an MP3 player.
It’s astounding how good this task feels, to break away from streaming services and go back to my own collection of music, algorithm-free and played on a device that isn’t collecting my data in order to exploit me.
I’m not at all being facetious when I say that it feels healing. I love analog but I don’t need analog everything. I want the tech I do use to feel like a tool, not a compromise with the Death Star.

You know how TV characters are always like “zoom in here” as they point to some low res video, which then magically magnifies until you can see a person’s pores?
Well, I’m watching a show, and one person points to the screen where another is sitting at a computer, playing security footage from a convenience store. She asks for a zoom in and the guy says, “I’m afraid our technology does not have that capability,” and I practically screamed in triumph at the technical correctness of this. 😂

Have been informed by my family that I’m using 😅 wrong.
I thought it was like 😂 but just LESS. Like the difference between a chuckle and a guffaw, and yes I laugh a lot and there are gradations.
But apparently it means “embarrassed but feeling okay about it”? What?!?
What’s next? Does my favorite heart 💜 that I think means, “Affectionate boop from purple-loving me” actually mean “I hope your second uncle dies in a landslide”?

I spent a lot of time looking through Traveler's Journals and assorted accoutrements yesterday, which included a lot of brass - brass pens, brass clips, brass rulers, etc.
There was so much talk of "it will take on a nice patina" - everyone loves a good patina.
Hey did we ever consider that AGING also gives us, humans, a nice patina? My little brass fountain pen is more beautiful for its age. It also smells a little weirder. But that's aging too. Let's just embrace the whole thing.

Thirty years ago today I put on more tulle than should really be allowed and married this nerd (whom some of you know as @npub1tn7…juss), who I still have a bonkers huge crush on. 🥰
I look at these photos and just - GAPE at our youth. We were 21 and 22. Our kids are right now 20 and 23. Can I imagine either of those total babies getting married? How did anyone let us get married that young, lol?
And yes I know some of you weren’t born yet, in 1995. 😅

Is 52 (a year from now) too old to start a Master’s Degree that will take three years to finish?

Just got back from doc's office. I'd left the building and was walking to the car, thinking how well today went too, nervous-system wise I mean. Calmer, happier. It's fascinating. YAY!
So I'm grinning at the wind, which is whipping through the lot, making the trees rustle, and I throw my arms out like YES, WIND, I SEE YOU, GLORIOUS YOU, and right as I reach the car, where Greg is waiting for me, a huge leaf smacks me right in the face. 😂

We just went to pick up our veggie box for our farm share. As we're walking back to the car, a guy who has gotten out of his car and passed ours (the only two cars in the lot) sees us and pumps his fist and yells, "FOR FRODO!"

It's a longshot, but hey does anyone know this lost dog in downtown Springfield, Oregon?
A woman just found him and brought him to our door to ask if he's ours. I grabbed my phone to call animal control and she mosied on home, so now we're waiting for an animal control person to come pick him up.

So I have one bike, an electric assist bike, and as I've shared here, I'm saving up for a #Rivendell next spring (non-electric, regular bike).
Hubby has teased me this is too many bikes, and I've said, "Dude, you have no idea how bike people get, be grateful I'm only thinking of two," and it led to us guesstimating how many people have more than one bike. I said over 30%, he thinks 1-2%.
How many bikes do you have? Not in your household, but for you personally to ride/maintain?

They played something tonight, I was busy making soup and didn’t get the name of it. When I came over to check, they’d put Cal’s box on my chair, and he stood up and reached out a paw and was trying to pull my hand down for scritches. It was so sweet and so bossy. How is he this charming? The older he gets the more I love him. Cal is going to make a cat person out of me.

I went looking in mah stuffs for something to make me laugh, and I found it: this video I took a few weeks ago when my friend and I were having lunch.
The dinos appeared, walked past us (waving at us I think, we were the only people facing them) and then dino-waddled to the other side of the cafe where they have other outdoor tables. We heard some loud Happy Birthday singing, then they reappeared and walked back to their car. It was so great!
