I couldn't get my generator serviced in time, but I'm prepped in case the power goes out. I'm gonna fill the bathtub with backup water (I have a well, & I'll put buckets of saved rainwater in the shower stall for flushing), cut the breakers to not-essential appliances/rooms, put blankets on the back of the bird cages and wheel them into the living room to share the fireplace with me and the dogs. It'll be lively if anything. I have 15 gallons of drinking water for me and the pets standing by, too.

This is the game many of us Texans fans have been waiting for: the Chiefs. We've been itching to beat them since 2019 because they've always had our number (and penalty-happy refs on their side who love when Mahomes "howls for the fouls" and makes them useful).
Gonna be a fun night: got my Texans shirt, homemade Texans bandana, my coffee, and my cozy socks so I can join the watch party (with my bongos to bang when we score serious points and great plays).

GO TEXANS!!! Sack Mahomes at least 5 times: once for each game we've lost against 'em since 2019. Minimize the penalties because you know he'll be howling for fouls, so sack him a bunch or run him out of bounds ASAP. Stop their run game and control the ball (kinda hard for Mahomes to do his schtick if he doesn't get the ball much, after all!).

What the actual hell is wrong with folks and their need for trendy bullshit? I thought the dumb-ass Stanley cup craze was bad enough last year... but then Starbucks did the glass bear-ista cup, drastically having FAR TOO LITTLE in stock and folks lost their minds...
I hadn't heard a thing about this bear cup til I stumbled on some poster's random comment on a vid about the stupid stanley cups (dunno how it showed up, but here we are). But damn... Starbucks is circling the drain the more they do stunts like this (and as someone who used to like being at Starbucks, the only folks I feel bad for there are the STORE EMPLOYEES. I am not gonna bother putting a tree up this year (no room and too much going on), but perhaps next year I'll find a tiny santa hat to put on my plushy Cthulhu doll and use THAT as the tree-topper. Or I'll attach my "Texans Santa" funko-pop doll somehow.
The snowflake topper I had is finally starting to break apart & I am sick of angels (had so many growing up). I'm more for secular or whimsical decorations no matter the occasion.

I love this team, even if they get called the "Cardiac Texans" by folks who carefully watch (or join the watch parties for info) every week. I love that the team is evolving and improving a bit each week. It didn't feel like it the first few weeks as it was 1 step forward, 1 step back (mostly for the offense), but now it's getting better.
Totally agree that if the offense keeps improving, we'll be in the playoffs and go farther than last year. Too much debate this season about who should be QB and all that mess, how bad things are, etc. But perhaps it's just the teacher/tutor in me: I'm not demanding perfection (injuries, play calls, ref calls, etc. prevent that anyway), just improvement. They're not coasting along, they're working hard, even after that disheartening start to the season.
This whole season is a madhouse all across the league, and I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Go Texans!

It's strange how the Bill of Rights ensures "freedom of Assembly", but then you get lawyers chipping away at how free that can be and what constitutes an "assembly" and suddenly you need permits and group restrictions.
The only way I can understand a "size restriction" on a group is an indoor event where you have the "maximum capacity" for fire code you have to adhere to. A public space? GTFO!

I admit, I like just kind of randomly looking around, and the anonymity of it. I don't have a bunch of family and co-workers trying to see what I'm doing; I can be me and just explore new things and say hi to random folks without being pressured to friend everyone. Sometimes someone just needs a friendly comment or a laugh and then we move on, like strangers in a coffee shop on our way to other places. A good moment, and gone.
But I like that I can focus on just what's on my server and those I have followed and when I get time, i try to give 15 minutes every now and then to exploring posts from all servers. May meet new friends or see new topics of interest that way. It's a neat system and I love that things aren't pushed on me to enjoy because the system thinks it knows me. My brain is a tricky place (enough so that Pandora gave up on me early on because it thought it knew what I wanted to hear and ran out of suggestions when I kept skipping songs it recommended--hee hee)

I can't figure out how folks play WITHOUT a controller, honestly. Must take lots of practice to not make crucial missteps with the keyboard so you hit the right sequence every time. A typo could blow half your team away in an online game, I'm sure.
Seriously, still a console gamer at heart, but can't get the hang of anything more complicated than an N64 (just too busy to try, too). I do have an x-box controller for Steam gaming, but I like my cartridges (and never get sick of the original "Perfect Dark") Still have my original N64 AND original SNES... and they still work fine (just have to get some extra cables to hook 'em up to the tv... not as good a picture as cathode ray TVs would have, but hey, still good playing.

Matt Young wrote a great article about the Texans QB situation, one I referenced in my own blog post this morning.
Seriously, fans, if the backup QB admits the starter is the starter for a reason, perhaps you should listen. Of course, this could be great humility on Mills' part, but like Stroud, he's a pretty humble and down-to-earth person.
I appreciate all the players involved in my Houston Texans and how they're evolving together. It's been a roller coaster, but I'm so sick of fair-weather fans ready to jump off the ship the moment it springs a leak or two. Yeah, i have my own disappointments, but you gotta believe the team can make a turnaround, and if they don't before the clock strikes zero, then see how they work with those mistakes in the next game.

Thanks. I know my knee-jerk inability to accept help, gifts, or compliments without major reciprocation is really damaging in the long run. It confuses me when people do things for me, though I'd do it for them in a moment. And then It's like a gate slams down between me & what I'm trying to achieve or the person I'm trying to speak to. It falls so hard I can hear it & feel it, which makes things awkward.
It had to be something I was taught early because I've always been this way & just noticed it was abnormal. I was a quiet obedient child who never rebelled, demanded things or threw tantrums. I must've learned that wanting things was greedy or selfish, because I feel guilt when I wish someone would recognize my efforts or include me, like "being good for goodness sake" isn't enough. I want it, but can't handle it when it comes (ugh).
Problem recognition is step 1, so I'll just work hard & be that work-in-progress this season. Maybe I'll find my groove by the new year.

Interesting how you call it a "gift". It occurred to me I have trouble accepting gifts, too. I'll give some out, but usually I just kinda do it slyly, like I leave it on someone's desk or something and walk off.
It occurred to me over the years that my socialization skills are in the toilet. I don't know why I feel so uncomfortable getting things from people, and yet I want to be part of the basic human organism. It's like a battle between being a recluse again and getting out there and interacting. I liked doing volunteer work when I could afford it (and am looking for nonprofit charity jobs among other things), and yet here I am. It just doesn't make sense.
I AM reading "Overcoming Anxiety for Dummies", so perhaps I'll have some tips and tricks in there to use to improve my social awareness and self-awareness. I really need to if I want to have any hope of getting a good-paying job til I find a way to work for myself.

The best station in my neck of the woods is the classic rock station, and it drives me nuts how we'll have so many artists, but they always wanna play the same 3 songs. Or at the same times of day they play the same songs. I leave the radio on for the dogs so it's not so quiet & boring. I lost count the number of times I'd come home late from shift and hear "Bad to the Bone", "Here I go Again" by Whitesnake, or "Pour Some Sugar On Me" If I worked 5 nights in a row, I'd hear all 3 of 'em easily. It's annoying.
It's like Christmas music: only in THAT case it's the same songs by the same artists despite the fact that dozens of other artists have covered those songs, too. Why the same ones over and over, day after day? Change it up a bit! Have someone else's cover the next day if you like that song!

Found out something when I was trying to fix my browser (keeps switching out of dark mode randomly after I did that windows update). My background slideshow might be what's making the switch to light mode again, as if when those pictures change over, so does the browser theme.
So, I went in my settings to change the theme (I tend to every month, anyway) and found where I can change the screen to warmer colors to block some blue light.
And whoa! My eyes can totally feel the difference. Part of the reason I like dark mode so much is it's less stressful for my eyes in rooms where the light varies so much. I can actually feel them adjusting and hopefully I'll get less headaches.
Now I'm gonna turn on my tablet and see if I can do the same there. Cool.

I kind of have the opposite problem: I'll give compliments, but I balk at receiving any for myself.
I don't know why. Maybe in early childhood & church I learned to be grateful, don't brag, be humble the wrong way, because I can't accept compliments (& deflect into self-effacing humor by reflex). It sucks because we all want recognition for good things we've done, but somehow I dismiss compliments as someone "just being polite" & not meaning it.
Yes, I have terrible self-esteem & imposter syndrome. I've felt like a burden much of my life, so I made myself small for others so easily, and it's a hard habit to break. Hard enough that if someone asked me to find something positive about myself, I go blank... though I'm trying to get to journaling again so I can dig these things out to work on.
Just wish I knew why & where the hell it came from so I could stop doing it. It makes interpersonal communication even more awkward for me, & I only have acquaintances as it is.

QUESTION FOR THE TECH SAVVY: What resources or advice would you recommend a total newbie to REMOTE WORK should try out (or get familiar with) before pursuing a remote work job?
ATM, I don't have many tech skills at all & little software use beyond Word & Excel on the regular (I barely do formulas w/ Excel, either). During COVID when the whole planet was learning Zoom, I was stuck doing the background check/fingerprinting job (and then the app acted up & crashed on days I was SUPPOSED to train. Damn, I was cursed).
I've done maybe 1 successful Microsoft Teams meeting for a job interview (took ages to set up; other interviewers either forgot or cancelled in favor of phone interviews last minute). No sending info online, no team collaboration, nothing.
In short: I have no experience or clue where to start. But I WANT & NEED to learn if I have any hope in getting paying work soon.
Anything you guys could recommend I should start with quickly (esp free stuff) would help. Thanks.

Thanks. It's totally frustrating how I can sometimes find jobs I like, but I can't pay my bills with them, or they demand open availability while only giving 15 hrs a week on average. Then they get pissy that you can't just work whenever they want you to work... but they don't seem to realize that the worker has to get ANOTHER job in order to pay the bills. They just want an easy time filling out that schedule chart without having to accommodate anyone.
But I also need a real wage that'll let me pay the bills. My last job was $13/hr and even after I had to work overtime a few weeks, it barely made a dent in my expenses. Car repair wiped out my savings last week. I'm hoping for a full time job before I basically have to sell everything not nailed down, and then property taxes are around the bend...
Employers need to wake up and realize they are creating the employment problem, but they are making too much money doing their worst to have any incentive to improve.

I believe it. Trying hard to get the hell out of my serving job because where I work, half the time I don't get tips. Get paid a bit better than the average server as base pay (federal minimum), but since folks can go to get their own food and then use the facilities or go to the bar and bypass me, it doesn't give me much of a shot at making the tips that would help pay my bills.
Don't get me wrong: I still enjoy serving for the most part (at least the staying busy and the social part), but the financial is killing me. Would be better if they just paid us all minimum $15 an hour and we didn't have to worry about tips.

Sure hope they are. Major Texans fan here (I'll actually be able to watch this Sunday's game and hope it's a great one).
I was in a chat earlier in the week and the big question was "Are we back?" My answer was "we're alive to fight another day." We get a lot of crap because lately we've won against terrible teams and ones that have had major injury-laden rosters worse than ours.
I think my Texans can beat the Broncos, though I foresee a close game. Either way, should they beat them, it'll add some truth to the discussion that we're a real contender for the playoffs. Collins is supposed to be back, and I can't wait for Dell to come back (his energy was infectious).
I hope whatever positivity and mystical mojo the O-line has been developing (and the team as a whole) continues.

2nd day with a headache & it just got worse: tried to fill out a job application that kept saving every couple of minutes, but when I was ALMOST done w/ the employment history, the page shifted, re-shifted, and all I'd put in had been wiped out. And then it auto-saved.
20 fucking minutes of work and it was all wiped out. I just gave up and went to the store for poor-food and I'm hoping with some venting (and lunch) I'll feel better and just apply to other jobs.
I'm on the raggedy edge, worse than I've ever been before. I can't afford to leap at the first opportunity anymore, because I end up in a worse place with even more stress.
I WANT a full-time job & to be able to pay my bills. It's so simple, yet employers have the gall to demand open availability when they won't give enough hours to make it work financially. They just want carte blanche to make their schedules simpler; they don't care the hoops we have to maintain to be available. I'm done with the merry-go-round.

Having one of those "if it's not one thing, it's another" weeks. Sold some items to get a month's worth of bills & car maintenance paid for, took the car in, and now I have no car til at least Monday & will have to pay double what I budgeted for.
Best laid plans and all. Ugh!!! But I wasn't about to let engine overheating/radiator issues go and just "bring it back later". It's too old to let things slide. But the lack of word on what's happening is pissing me off. AND I missed 2 shifts at work (but it's my barely-pays serving job, so there).
Sucks being stranded at home for 3-4 days when I have responsibilities. The good news is I got a LOT of job applications put in while stuck. And one was for a bookstore I used to go to. I wish it was closer, but it's got full time hours and I REALLY want the job. I don't care if I'd be working 10-hr days 4 days a week... that would help my gas and be just fine with me!
I'm gonna go run this angry/excited energy out of my system so I can focus.

That was a helluva play for sure. WAJ and Schultz were the standout players on the Texans' side... just wish we'd had more of 'em, then maybe we'd have at least narrowed the gap if not won the game.
Wish I knew what happened to the mojo that developed between weeks 3 & 4, because the Texans looked like they'd gotten their groove back. Saw a lot of complaints online that they'd had 2 weeks and THIS game was the result? Well, I think they had too much time, and the momentum they'd built had fizzled out because it had no outlet
Hopefully they get it back, soon. They have had some exciting games lately when they look like they're having fun out there. Now they're back to tense, and it showed in the crazy play calling.

(sigh) Stayed up to support the #Houstontexans tonight, and I saw a team that looked as unsure, tense, & damn-near scared as they were in weeks 1-3.
Folks in the chat complained that they'd had 2 weeks to prepare & THIS was the result? I think they had TOO MUCH time: they lost the momentum they'd built up in weeks 4 & 5 while overthinking & they psyched themselves out. The bye week actually stopped their progress.
I just hope whatever mojo they got b/w weeks 3 & 4 returns fast or else we're gonna get creamed the rest of the season. I was trying to be the upbeat, positive person in the chat, even as we were losing by bigger & bigger gaps... but they were making decisions that reminded me of the ones nobody could understand the first 3 weeks again.
Hoping next week is FAR better and they get their mojo back. This team is capable of being much better, but whatever this play calling is needs to freaking stop. It's frustrating to the players AND the fans.

Oddly enough, I think I liked UB40 most because it reminded me of being a kid on Saturday going to the roller rink. Some of their covers were fun to skate to and semi-danceable, even for folks who didn't have the best coordination on skates, let alone serviceable dance moves in regular shoes.

The suckiest thing about the job market in Texas right now: few offer entry-level full time hours, & part-time is impossible to plan a budget around. Anywhere b/w 4 and 32 hours is part time? Good luck planning bill payments with that!
And employers have the gall to complain folks don't wanna work or aren't available. Well, give us enough hours & pay so we only need 1 job & we'll be far more available!.
I get departments might have fixed times, but the deli guy seemed positively inflexible with what he has (low staff, so I get it). But hopefully I can do main floor stocking (guess they think I'm a wimpy girl who can't lift 35-50 pounds when necessary. Well, this chick CAN!)
He's passing my application to Bakery, & I hope that lady calls me back next week and says "I need someone who can work Mon-Friday, 11pm to 5 am." because I would jump on that.
At least the seasonal job gives me the chance to pick up LOTS of extra hours. Just wish the wage were as much as that grocery job.

Cleaning house with hope that I'll get that grocery store job.
My music room floor is bare because I needed to get pounds of cobwebs and dog hair out of there, and it needed a bad sweeping, mopping, all that great stuff. My drum kit is in another room. But I can use the floor space to put the rugs that need to dry and smooth out down for the day and re-home them later. My house is a wreck.
But I started there because I have a LOT of stuff I need to move around. I am hoping that I get this job because it means I won't have to sell any more instruments. I don't know how to play most of what I've bought, but I want the chance to learn the more I hear music I love. It's like I'm inviting my old interests to stay and thrive.
While I'll be a tired wreck come January if I get all 3 jobs, it'll be worth it because I'll be able to do maintenance & restart an emergency fund. I'm preparing for when things get a little less hectic so I can do my hobbies again.

Well, that was interesting. Went online to finish my pallet jack training and checked my e-mail just to see that the seasonal position I interviewed with over the phone yesterday approved me and wanted me to do onboarding. So, I did that real quick and that's a sigh of relief. Now I'll have 2 jobs this season when I need them most.
And yet... I have ANOTHER interview tomorrow for that grocery store job, 1-on-1 this time. I got the call this morning (whew!). And if they are willing to give full time hours to me as an overnight position, I'm doing it. That job would give me more per hour than I've ever gotten in my life.
Of course, that would mean juggling THREE jobs... but considering I've been badly underemployed and scrambling for funds for months now, I'll do it. I'll be damned exhausted by the time January rolls around and the seasonal job ends, but it could work out.
I'd just have to figure out timing so the pets get fed and potty breaks and playtime with me. Fingers crossed!

Well... I'm definitely getting my heart rate (and my hopes) up. For the first time, I might actually get a real chance at that grocery store job. As much as being a cashier or day stocker would be good, I'd get better pay working overnight.
Either way, if I can work full time at THOSE pay rates, I might be a bit sleepy this month, but dammit... I'll be in good shape the rest of the year and beyond. Fingers and toes and hell, my hair, too at this point, crossed that tomorrow's 1 on 1 interview goes well and I can get a good bunch of options.
I'm on the raggedy edge and need to work--I WANT to work--and be able to take care of my feathered, finned, and pawed family (and myself). I'm tired of fretting every time I need to spend $5 on some staple I'm missing in my kitchen or just needing to pick up dog food and can't get the value size because it's too much money (though a better price per pound).
And I need to build up that savings so I feel I have the chance at a future again.

Employers say we don't want to work, but dammit, it's hard when you WANT to work to get them to take you seriously in the states. Back to square 1: I have a job I like, but can't pay the bills with it. I wasn't on the schedule for this week & gonna call to see if it's an oopsie, but still need an extra job regardless. I have bills to pay, so if i have to get a full-time overnight job, I'll do it. And fast. Might take a few days to get used to, but I don't give a damn.
Went to 1 group interview today (at that same damned grocery store that never hires me. Dunno why). The other was for a seasonal position over the phone. I can't afford to wait for them to get back to me, so I applied to some other positions. I'm not asking for too much... just enough per hour to pay my bills & save up to do home & car improvements. An overnight stocking job at that store would be life-changing, but they've turned me down for 3 years now.
I'd die holding my breath, so not gonna bother.

Harvey was a mess all over. I know the social media said they had concerns that folks would get stuck trying to get there and maybe drown, but as the waters receded and people still needed shelter, it took far too long to open the doors. But considering how exclusive Lakewood Church has been over the years (if you want to sit close you basically have to promise a very large donation; people I know ended up being told to leave or find another seat in the nosebleed sections if they wanted to stick around & they never went back). They're the biggest proponents of the polish and shine, the appearance of Christianity and the damned Prosperity Gospel.
That put the nail in my beliefs for good. It's so anti-Christ it's no wonder Christianity is turning turtle in the water faster and faster, like a melting iceberg.

R'amen! Even when I still believed, I felt there was something "off" about Joel Osteen (old enough to remember his more severe father who sounded more like John Hagee the way he delivered his sermons). Joel just sounds and feels like a used car salesman knowing he's got nothing but lemons on the lot but will pretend to go the extra mile for your benefit. I call it the "plastic smile": too bright, too many teeth, and feels so unreal.
That's the sucky part about modern "charisma" though: it's more about just pointing fingers, general negativity & arrogance, and finding someone to blame, because the Universe forbid we have time and space to think, do some deep digging, and look to see it's mostly the folks these new charismatic back that cause the most problems.

I wish I had my phone on me when a little visitor showed up outside my window. I was airing out the house and had the windows behind my parakeet cages open. I was refilling their water bowls and saw a tabby cat looking through the window screen at my parakeets a few inches away, like it was window-shopping for a snack. It had gotten on top of my a/c unit and stretched upward to see inside, paws braced on the sill. It looked at me like a deer in headlights when we saw each other. I started laughing and said "yeah, they're not for you." It just gave me a loud disappointed meow and left.
I think it was my next door neighbor's cat, but my backyard is so overgrown I couldn't find where it went. Oh well. I'll probably see it later.

I'm pretty sure CK is the type of person Gandhi was referring to when he said "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."
I've become atheist over the years and don't subscribe to religion, and I hate how much Christianity's been weaponized, warped, and treated like a salad bar where you pick what you want to believe for your own convenience. But the words ascribed to Jesus have a lot of merit and wisdom and deserve following. Folks that walk the walk of Jesus and his example for compassionate living (not what the pastors say) will have my respect, whether we have the same belief system or not.
