It looks like China is again looking to "ban" bitcoin mining.
A lot has changed since they banned mining in 2021.
In 2021, network hashrate was ~160 EH/s. Today, there is ~7.5x more hashrate.
In 2021, China had 40-60% of hashrate. Today, they have ~14%.
In 2021, the United States had relatively abundant excess electricity. Today, supply is tight due to increased demand from AI hyperscalers.
This Chinese mining ban will bring with it less network disruption and new back end benefactors in the form of countries with excess energy that isn't being bid up by AI data centers.
It's crazy how much can change in a little over four years.

Earlier today I re-watched this mini-doc on James J Hill and how he succeeded during the railroad boom despite refusing government subsidies that were plentiful at the time.
He focused on efficient capital allocation and investing in civilization.
Part of his success was derived from how simply he set the goals for his company.
"We must operate:
- the fastest locomotives,
- to pull the longest trains,
- with maximum tonnage,
- over the straightest tracks,
- using the least change in elevation,
- with minimal maintenance costs."
Every capital allocation decision he made focused on achieving these goals.
It's hard not to think about the AI boom and all of the government investment going into the sector these days after watching this. How many opportunists are circling their wagons to feed from the government trough at the moment? How efficiently is that easy money going to be allocated?
Who in AI and the booming energy infrastructure industry budding around it is taking the hard but lucrative path that James J Hill took during the railroad boom?

Many bitcoiners are butt hurt to see gold going parabolic.
Zoom out, bitcoin has performed exceptionally well so far this decade and will continue to do so.
Gold is having its day because governments are falling back to what they know as the dollar reserve system comes into question.
China is setting up a parallel settlement network using gold and it's using gold because it's been reliable for millennia and, more importantly, has the liquidity profile to settle the size they need to settle if they're going to compete with treasuries.
This does not change the fact that bitcoin is superior in every way to gold. It's a harder money that's more easily divisible, easier to send, easier to verify and easier to custody.
Bitcoin still has many trillions of dollars of market cap to add before it can compete with gold from a liquidity perspective.
I am more optimistic than ever that bitcoin will reach this point because more people are learning these facts every day and the infrastructure around the protocol is advancing at a faster pace than I've ever seen.
Square's release this week is the latest example of this. 4,000,000 merchants across the United States are currently being forced to ask the question, "Should I accept and hold bitcoin?"
How many do you think will take the plunge?

In a recent Bank of America survey, 75% of fund managers responded that they have a 0% allocation to bitcoin.
Retail is still front running the "smart money".

A recent Bank of America survey found that just 9% of managers that responded have any exposure to bitcoin with a weighted average allocation of those who have being 0.3% of AUM.
The "smart" money is STILL missing the best performing asset of all time 16 years after it entered the world.
When these managers eventually wake up and realize that not being exposed to bitcoin is untenable it will make the ETF flows we've seen since the beginning of last year look small.
