One aspect of retail we've forgotten after generations of conglomerated big box stores and subsequent online conglomeration is that of curation of products.
When you went into a family-owned hardware store in 1985, you got experts who chose products based on a balance of price and quality. Maybe they only had two kinds of hammers or one brand of bolts, but somebody selected those. There was some level of trust in what you were getting.
Now that labor is on us to filter from dozens of types and brands, based on reviews that are gamed by botnets, against manufacturers who change up the models yearly to dodge bad reviews. It's a race to the bottom because we don't have local curators who are personally invested in your returning to their store.

As I fell asleep, I reflected on how this is actually a great example of what Jung meant by the collective unconscious. It was never anything mystical or inherently new age. The mechanism is simple:
A significant portion of the population has had common experiences that shaped us, particularly to do with being taken for granted and exploited by abusers and capitalism now in late stage collapse, and feeling generally powerless to defend ourselves. Add this to our common cultural background (Aesop, Grimm, Untitled games with a previous meme cycle), and our knowledge of the properties of reality (cute animals but loud and fast with long necks and built-in weapons and will attac).
These ingredients mix together similarly for each of us, such that we instantly understand a meaning that wasn't intended by its out-of-touch corporate creator. This validation, in addition to a particular irony that makes our oppressors look like fools, gives us a common emotional and creative response.
(There's a similar effect that underlies the concepts of the "zeitgeist" (also a Jungian idea) and the attitudes of generational cohorts.)
Of course there are exceptions. Some may lack one or more of these ingredients due to diverse experiences, backgrounds, sensory processing, trauma copes, sense of humor, and exposure to the source materials. But that doesn't change that it happens, or why.
And I'm here for it.

A YouTuber (Maximino) reading Reddit comments just said something extremely thought-provoking. I'll paraphrase it here:
Someone who isn't Christian can't sin. It's logically impossible. The same way a gentile can't break kosher.
Sin is a Christian concept for Christians to avoid. If you're not Christian, you can't violate Christian laws.
This is one of those rhetorical spaces that non-Christians have completely ceded just because Christians say it's a certain way.
Atheists often try to get around it by saying sin isn't real.
Well, just like kosher, it is real. It just doesn't apply to people outside the belief system.

It's a perfect example of men doing the work, unpacking patriarchy, finding deep honesty within vulnerability, and healing their own damn wounds.
Tracks from this album were playing on repeat on rock stations for all men and boys to hear in 2001, along with similarly-themed songs by Korn, Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, and many other bands which were considered the hardest music ever made up till that point.
It wasn't in response to any women. Alanis, Jewel, Sarah McLachlan, and Dido were all doing their own work in their own scene. These men didn't need women to respond to. They LED their scene, started their own conversation, screamed and yelled about their own moms and dads and the ills of society as they saw them.
Put on this album, or one by Chevelle, or Deftones, Maynard, Disturbed, and get inspired to get up off your ass and make change.

You can practice critical thinking while watching competition reality shows. This can be a good excise in awareness of your own biases, cognitive dissonance, and how easily you can be manipulated through storytelling.
1. First, pick your favorite competitors across the first couple of episodes.
Try to understand your own criteria for why they're your favorites, so you can adjust if they reveal new parts of themselves or new behaviors as the show progresses.
For instance, I value authenticity, people like myself, marginalized people, those with the best reason to win, competent players, and anyone who isn't one of those abusive personalities. (I do think lying is within the spirit of a game and not necessarily disqualifying.)
2. Notice when your favorites begin to change and why.
The editors will center a few contestants in any given episode. Notice if who you are rooting for ever changes *only* for this reason.
Stepping out of the narrative, are you suddenly pulling for someone you previously didn't like? Is there a good reason that aligns with your consistent criteria, or are you just being led by the focus of whoever is in the protagonist position?
For example, right now I'm watching the second season of Million Dollar Secret. Everyone's suspicions are circling around two targets for elimination. I keep catching myself rooting for the dudebro and against the smart girl. Because that's the editorial POV.
But I actually favored the smart girl in the *last episode*. I still like her. The bro has not actually won me over. But because I've been pulled into his perspective narratively, I empathize with him automatically. It simply bypasses my reasoning center.
I've become aware of this at several points and reminded myself that I'm rooting for her. I keep getting pulled back anyway.

Reflecting on some science facts that, when I was a child, weren't accepted facts yet, and in many cases, the scientific consensus was full of doubt as to whether it was possible:
- Is there water on Mars?
- Is there liquid water on any moon or planet other than earth?
- Do any planets even exist outside the solar system?
- Aside from comets, does the solar system extend beyond Pluto?
- Are any animals besides humans "conscious" or even "intelligent"?
- Platypi (not mammals) and ferns (not plants) each had their own class! (Sometimes I think I imagined this.)
It's amazing how quickly new discoveries lead to course corrections. For example, the uncertainty on many of these questions led a near-consensus that life outside of earth was probably completely impossible. That attitude has shifted, too.

@nprofile…a4ar On YouTube it's about training the algos (block being shorthand for "Do Not Recommend This Channel") to not put AI in my eyes so I don't have to stare at the thumbnail or mid-vid animation trying to guess, which exhausting, demoralizing, and bad for my brain. Both the guessing and the viewing. I have noticed changes in my subconscious imagery after viewing AI content and I do not like it.
Mastodon is a different ecosystem, and I rarely block here, though if you're going to come into my mentions with pro-AI proselytizing and telling me who to block, as if you have a better understanding of my reasoning than I do, that might get my attention.

The memoir is called Sexcommunicated and has just started process of publication. Might be out in a year. It's for Natasha Helfer, a sex and marriage therapist who was excommunicated in 2021 over her activism and public views. As an exmo then, I first heard of her in 2011 when she wrote a blog post in the then quite active Mormon blogosphere, stating that masturbation was not sinful. It made quite a splash! Her excommunication story is a wild ride.
It was difficult to write as there was so much information and story to pack in there, but I'm really proud of it. I'll have shared byline.

@nprofile…nmr0 Yeah, this is a long-standing debate throughout all of activism throughout history, one I find fascinating because it never seems to have a firm answer. Work inside or outside the system? It's a particularly poignant one in the small world of Mormondom because it's easier to see the component parts.
Clearly I left and am fighting from without, helping people leave and pressuring for change. Meanwhile, there are folks who simply can't leave. Including children. So in that sense, I support those who work from within, who are doing tremendous work which has saved lives. And many of the changes are substantive. The women's changes tend to be the least substantive of all. (I wonder why. 🤔)
History has shown that most who fight long and hard enough on the inside usually do leave, or are kicked out. The memoir I recently wrote was for such a woman.

I saw some people talking shit about No Kings in light of the warehouse fires. Like, saying No Kings is inferior, even pointless or counterproductive.
So here goes. Rant mode on. (I made a similar comment over on YouTube but I didn't think y'all would need this.)
We need BOTH types of action. Any study of American civil rights history shows this. You need the "soft" MLK non-violent rhetoric to be backed by the stick of MalcolmX. I'm fuzzy on earlier periods to cite names, but I know you'll find this wrt unions, first wave feminism, and other successful movements throughout the US and Europe.
Thing is, without millions of people who will show up in the streets, a warehouse fire can be easily dismissed as a lone nut, easily suppressed along with the other lone nuts lost to history. Nothing to fear, boss, we'll just do another crackdown, suppress media reporting, and the handful of copycats snuff out of sight until it's business as usual.
But millions of people in the streets who AGREE with the arsonist's demands? That's another thing entirely! That's a potential mob. A rather large one at that, geographically distributed. If a mob of that size turned, even the U.S. military couldn't take it on.
This is also where regular people (who haven't, until now, thought about activism in these tumultuous decades), make contacts and get inspired to put in more effort outside the protest.
Literally pick a lane and then don't spilt! Don't fall for pointlessly fighting amongst ourselves by downplaying the efforts of allies.
*I'm* not in any position to go Luigi or Waluigi on anything. Few of us are! I can hardly make it to a No Kings event. That doesn't mean I fail to support either! They are both absolutely necessary, as are voters, people who show up to town halls and PTA meetings, letter writers, people who run for something, zine printers, protest medics, food pantries, social media warriors, artists, financial donors, all of it.
I won't have anyone picking fights by dismissing efforts because it's not their personal pet pony. We don't have time for that ego shit anymore. To me it looks like nothing but flat out propaganda meant to release steam from this work. I will mentally file you under the category of "false flag psyop." Stop it and get back to your own work.

For those who have succeeded through life by intimidating, manipulating, and coercing others, this is their tested method of getting their way, so they feel justified in taking this position because they think it will always work to make them top dog in their little world adjacent to their ideological allies.
But even towards their ends, from a completely selfish standpoint, this worldview holds a fatal flaw.
If you allow that you can take from others by force and manipulation, then you allow that you can be taken from by the same means. Maybe you *think* no one can take from you, but nowhere in any place in history or nature, has any one strategy been completely undefeatable.
There is always a way around any fortress wall. There is always some weakness in the greatest military. Even the best liars can be out-lied. This is the fundamental flaw of an abuse mindset. You have set up the rules such that you are fair game, and someone WILL take what you have eventually. No matter how much you bluster, you can never sleep easy, because deep down you know this.
The only sure strategy for winning safety and success is an even playing field, where the rules apply the same to protect all, where all interests of all people are shared, where all succeed or fail together.

Sometimes I waste an hour doing that even if I end up settling on something (it's REALLY hard for me to pick in the first place — it's reinforcing my decision paralysis).

I've been poking around in Letterboxd to see if I can tell it what streaming services I'm currently subscribed to.
It would be of value to me if I could tell it my subscriptions, and then filter movies by which I'm subscribed to. Can it do that?
No point in me using it otherwise, since I have my to-watch list elsewhere.
The hassle of picking a movie when I don't know if I have access to it is the biggest barrier for me getting back into a regular movie routine again. For awhile I got around this simply by renting after choosing from my list. But I'm short on extra cash at the moment, and that's not sustainable if I do it frequently.
(My local library doesn't have Kanopy/Hoopla.)

I'm gonna tell my fellow white Americans, if you're trying to decolonize, or want to decolonize, and are overwhelmed, start somewhere. Start with something you feel like you can do, and start gently questioning everything else, and planning the next step.
Lifestyle changes are stressful and a lot of work. Impossible to do all at once. But it's better to do some than none, especially if it's a journey towards doing more.
Each step, I find ways that whiteness holds me back, sucks me dry, and has isolated me from nature and my own humanity.
Much of this is mental. Whiteness is a cult. Almost twenty years ago I thought, "Now that I'm learning about cults, I wonder if larger society is also a cult?... someday I'm gonna tackle that."
Whiteness/capitalism *is* that cult. That's the supporting doctrinal structure of the whole package I call Abuse Culture.
Whiteness isn't a skin color, it's an ideology, a system of power. Unpacking your whiteness is deconditioning from abuse culture. It's freeing to dump cult manipulation pressures like dependency, elitism, and demand for purity. If you've done this process for religious trauma, it's only another step to do so for society's cult doctrines.
And with that comes behavior. That cycle you're in with the job and debt? Start planning a way out. It seems impossible — it might even be — but maybe it's not if you're willing to do things you believe are impossible, but that billions in the Global South prove *is* possible. Because they have no other choice. But you do.
There, right there, that resistance you feel? Maybe defensiveness? Fear? That's whiteness. And whiteness isn't you. It's a construct that adheres your ego to power's puppet strings.
I also thought it would be impossible to leave Mormonism, but here I am, 25 years later. Now I'm looking to leave the colonial indoctrination behind, too, and as many of my harmful behaviors as I can... one at a time.

I'm watching a reaction video to Everlast's What It's Like and thinking about what a huge effect that song had on me.
My mom (yes, toxic mom) always talked about how she tried not to judge (yes, that mom) and told of various situations where she judged and then found herself in that situation and understood why people did what they did. I guess this lesson didn't stick with her, but it stuck with me, and I related it to this song.
There was important music playing constantly on the radio in the 90s. Some of us were paying attention. There's alotta folks today who need to hear this song and really think about what it means.

@npub1zdp…vqv8 @npub1h5t…llsm He was from Pullman, WA and when I went to the WSU campus in the late 80s for a science project, you could tell which department you were in from the Farside cartoons taped to people’s doors.
