planting native pollinator-friendly flowers is a great step to take. The more ground space those take up, the more bees you'll attract and also the less water you'll need to use.

There's a word for taking code you didn't write or read, running it through tests you didn't write or read, and putting it in production.
That word is "negligence".

I think my biggest disappointment in this whole thing is that America has more guns than people, and apparently nobody can fucking shoot straight. Stormtroopers, the lot of us.

I mean...they ran off all the "DEI" people, so we're left with a secret service made up of mediocre white men.
I voted mixed: real attempt, fake secret service.

do you ever run into these vintage locks being all gunked up and that being a problem with opening them? Do the need cleaning/oiling/whatever before you can practice on them?

How (racist/sexist/whatever) harassment on Mastodon works:
1. Harasser replies to their target's post, with the reply set to "followers only", saying the most vile stuff you can imagine.
2. All the harasser's followers join in on the harassment, posting more vile stuff.
3. Nobody but the target and the harassment crew can see the vile stuff that was said.
4. Target is traumatized. Nobody else can see why.
5. Everybody says "I don't see it so it's not happening."

yep. That resonates with how I'm feeling about it too. What really drives me absolutely bonkers is that there are no shortages, it's all manufactured scarcity that started with the slop vendors preordering years of chip fab production.

the dirty secret of "software engineering" is that it isn't engineering at all. Nobody is licensed and nobody is legally responsible for the public harms they cause.
Contrast that to civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers and their legal requirements: https://www.bpelsg.ca.gov/laws/pe_act.pdf

it's a fair point that insulting people who won't see the insults is a particularly stupid waste of time.
Assuming the person *can* see the insults, what exactly is the purpose of tone policing attempts to shame that person? If somebody is self-conscious about their dick and you want to shame them, talk about their dick. If I'm ever face-to-face with Donald Trump, you'd better believe I'm calling him a weird-dicked loser where he can hear me.

-Did you know that you can choose to limit who can see your reply to a specific post to “followers only”? Did you connect that this same feature can be used to harass so that the only people who can see the harassment are the harasser and the target?
[Dave's note: this is THE BIG ONE that harassers use. The only people who can see the post are the target and all their harasser buddies, who join in on the harassment]

Limitations of “I don’t see it?”
- Are you a marginalized person? If not, then you’re not a target of what Person A is experiencing.
- Did you know that depending on what your instance is or is not moderating on a server level influences what you see? If one or more sources that are targeting Person A are moderated on Person D’s server, then no one on Person D’s server will see those posts without logging out to see them.

Limitations of “OMG is your instance not moderated?”
- Did you consider that when someone files a report they’ve already experienced the harm being reported?
- Have you considered that some communities may have a higher risk of impact than others when it comes to moderation?
- Is the issue they’re experiencing systemic and omnipresent? If so, while moderation will help, it cannot stop what is happening by itself.

Limitations of “Oh no! Have you tried changing instances?”
- Did you know that when you migrate instances you lose your posting history?
-Did you know that migrating instances is not as simple as “create account on new instance, point old account to new account”?
- Did you know that changing instances does not necessarily address the root cause of the harassment? In other words, harassers may and will try to follow targets to new instances?

Some context: a common paradigm we see
Person A: YOU HAVE NO IDEA THE HARASSMENT I RECEIVE!
Person B: Oh no! Have you tried changing instances?
Person C: OMG is your instance not moderated?
Person D: I don’t see it? What are you even talking about?
Person E: Are you reporting these to your mods? People can’t fix what they don’t see!
Person F: Are you reporting these to other mods? People can’t fix what they don’t see!

Hachyderm.io has its problems as an instance, but they published a GREAT explainer for moderation on Mastodon. It's part 1 of a series, but I found it particularly useful for describing the experience of BIPOC folx compared to white folx.
