this was also (accidentally) a demonstration of the p2p nature of calls in #XMPP. We had a video call running when killing the server, thinking that we could show it freezing up, but the call continued running!
Next time we should have two unpluggings: one where people see they can no longer send texts when the cable is pulled out, and then again with an ongoing video call to see that it is no longer dependent on the XMPP server once the connection is established

right, that was the conclusion I came to as well but was hoping to be proven wrong 😛
Removing a tag sounds like an easy functionality to add, but selecting the originating message seems to be quite the stumbling block. I guess I'll just remember to manually un-tag these for now...

Does #Thunderbird have a way to set up a #filter for "act upon $message when I reply to $smessage"? (Basically, I have a "To reply" tag and want to automatically remove the tag once I actually send a reply) :thunderbird:

I realised to my horror that #NPCI (the banking cartel which operates #UPI) added major restrictions to UPI collect requests last month. No wonder two of the websites I wanted to make payments at refused to support it
But I was able to make a UPI collect request while registering for #ChennaiFOSS a few days back and again today to make my monthly #SIP payment. I wonder what's going on?
Will update on the wiki if I figure out the pattern 🏁

Shoutout to #FLOSSbOxIN, a small offering of #selfhosted services run by @npub173f…zzvm for the public to use

I think large instances are nice because they provide a landing place for people to get onto user-respecting software, but small services like this are filling a much needed role for returning to more distributed, more resilient Internet infrastructure
Donations are welcome, but simply signing on and using the services is too!

this is an important point and one I've been thinking about too. In the #XMPP world, we have generic servers and let the clients do whatever they want on top of it, which means the same account can be used for various purposes. I was wondering why this wasn't so in the #ActivityPub world, so it's good to know there's no particular reason for it and it can be that way if we want it to be!
It'd also reduce work for new projects as they "just" have to implement a client, not a server :fedi:

New version of #Convo just dropped. Main highlight: end-to-end #encryption support with #OMEMO! 🔒✨
https://git.disroot.org/badrihippo/convo/releases/tag/0.2.0
Coming up on the #BananaHackers store soon, which will incidentally also fix the currently broken install process from there 🍌
I'm going to now switch over to a more polished UI (based on the excellent work by solid-telekram author Cyan) after which we can let all the small but numerous missing features roll in 🏗️

an important message indeed! Trying to go "locally built only" for #FreeSoftware code makes no sense, and trying to enforce it would be counterproductive
What governments are trying to do with such rules is assert their #DigitalSovereignty. They should realise that digital souvereignty is *already* assured just by using *any* Free Software regardless of origin. Any attempt to impose geographical restrictions will affect Free Software and therefore undermine sovereignty too

📢 @npub1eyk…ndu6 server upgrade test
Hi all, I'm currently running upgrades on a test version of the #Prav server, to prepare for a full upgrade. I'll be upgrading the #Debian version from #Bookworm to #Trixie, which will also upgrade #ejabberd in the process and unblock a new version of our Android #app from being released.
Since it's only on a test server for now normal operations should remain unaffected. I'll report back here when it's done and schedule a time to run the upgrade on the main server.

yeah. I'm not sure how exactly Matrix works, but from what I understand it every server stores a copy of history for every group conversation it's involved in (whereas XMPP only stores history for conversations hosted by that server) which tends to increase resource usage. I'm not sure if there are other reasons too but Matrix does end up using up a lot of storage

Excited that @npub1eyk…ndu6 is finally starting the process of formally registering as a #cooperative!

I've seen fractional numbers in a few places before, but the other thing I noticed is that for 2G I used to get "E" whereas with 3G I'd sometimes see either "H" and "H+"
If 2.5G is GPRS, I wonder what plain 2G is, as I think GPRS was the first widespread "you can now get Internet on your cellphone!" technology? Maybe it was just plain ol' voice calls without any Internet 🤔️
Weird that I'm only getting 2.5G here and not 2.75G. It's outrageous! 🤪️

it's a 2G mobile connection (yes we still have that here). I think the "point five" indicates the upgraded version or whatever (maybe EDGE vs. GPRS?)

oh oops, I must have missed the "matches with wallpaper" part 😅️
Phosh doesn't really have a wallpaper as such, though, so maybe this still counts? And for people like me who went and set a background anyway, I remember this Python script that picks predominant colours from an image, so it should just be a matter of time...😉️

ah okay! I didn't realise Thunderbird could even be customised, so that's awesome. Although I should've guessed it given Firefox can be customised the same way 😅️

well my #PocoF1 lasts about 8 hours per charge, so you shouod probably carry a power bank like I did. There are also some quirk peculiar to my phone like not being able to receive calls on suspend and no camera drivers, but if you get an actual designed-for-Linux phone like the #PinePhone or #Librem those are not issues (besides maybe the battery life)
If you don't need full mainline, @npub1kx0…hnqj can probably tell you more about the #Droidian based #FuriPhoneFLX1

Last charge while I bus-hop the last leg home. I could have waited around a bit and got a direct bus, but that'd take a while this early in the morning as services haven't picked up yet and I missed the *very* early series of buses that end around 5:45am 🚌️🚌️🚌️

not working even after upgrade; maybe I can download the package directly (or wait). Calendar alarms work; at least they ring. Maybe I can try the clocks timer too, depending on where the problem was 👀️

By the way, the music player I'm using now is #Lollypop, which lets you also stream music and get album metadata from places like Jamendo and #YouTube 🍭
Here's me checking out the Fediverse's very own @npub12p3…vx8t! If you want to support them rather than just listen, check their profile for ways (and you'll get to be able to use #Amberol from the other screenshots or other music players rather than just #Lollypop 😉️)

At the railway station after dinner and sitting under a charging point. The phone is charged, but the power bank isn't 🪫
While waiting, I decided to discharge my earphones a bit 🎧
I recommend #MiracleOfSound for fantasy show/game/movie themed #music, often with accompanying videos!
By the way, if you're a #GameOfThrones/#asoiaf fan, see if you can spot whose contact list is shown in one of the #Convo screenshots (CW your replies if they're public):

Reached the station and got my bus with minutes to spare, but that's no fault of Mobian's: blame the railways 😉️
There seems to be an issue with the mic; that happens sometimes. A restart seems to have fixed it: at least, it picks up static and finger-snapping; I haven't tested on an actual call yet 📞️
