Thanks to a recent upload to the Internet Archive from "LazArchive", I could finally put together a set of compatible MS-DOS 3.31 floppy disks. The COMPAQ FASTART utility disk from 1989 finally works as intended using the COMPAQ User Programs v6.01 Rev B. This never worked for me before, so it's a huge improvement! 😃
MS-DOS v3.31 is a particularly useful version of DOS, because it was the first version to support a partition size of over 32MB... up to 512MB!

Earlier tonight, I was searching the web for the official Compaq diagnostics disk to add a Compaq Deskpro 386/25 to my collection of 86Box virtual machines. This machine's from the late 80s and it does not have anything like a BIOS settings menu, but instead uses a bootable floppy disk instead.
Great success! I did not only find working disk images, but I even managed to download the original files from Compaq to create these disks in the first place. In both 3.5" and 5.25" versions! The files are named "SP0308.EXE" and "SP0316.EXE".
I'm reallly grateful to the community for preserving these files! 😃

Wasn‘t 512MB RAM too much for a Pentium II? I remember having 512 megs of RAM in my 1.5GHz Centrino laptop back in 2003 running Windows XP. It sounds a bit anachronistic for a 233MHz system?

My five year old gaming PC from 2020 just received a few, much needed, upgrades. I wanted to keep the old B550M AM4 motherboard, as well as most of the components.
Its GPU / gaming performance is now more than twice as fast as before.

The latest build of 86Box emulator is capable of reproducing the actual sound of a floppy disk drive. While this is a function still in beta, it adds a completely new dimension of depth to the retro experience. I like it!
Here's a quick video sample... booting MS-DOS 6.22 and installing STUNTS from 3.5inch floppy disks.

Does anyone still remember "FURY 3" ? As one of the earliest titles for Windows 95, it was used extensively in Microsoft's advertising campaign for the system. The game is actually fairly simple and runs smoothly even within an 86Box VM!

Mmmh... as far as I can see, I don't think it can import/export this SuperCalc 2 format you mentioned. Here are screenshots of the the open / save dialogues. This is from Excel v2.01.
I must admit, I've never even heard about this file format. To me, SC2 files were always linked to SimCity 2000. 😉

This has always been a bit confusing to me: The original Sim City "Graphics Pack 1 - Ancient Cities" was also known as "Architecture 2" in its European release. At the same time, it always contained the same three graphic themes: "Ancient Asia", "Medieval Times" and "Wild West".

This includes an .IMG disk image, a pristine Greaseweazle stream, as well as a 300dpi scan of the disk itself. This game's such a classic for MS-DOS!

I finally managed to install a working graphics driver for the TRIDENT 8900D within my new 86Box VM. This is running in a beautiful 800x600 resolution with 256 colors. Classic!
In case you're wondering about this file manager: Yes, it doesn't have toolbars. No, it's not broken. This is normal. You're looking at the good old Windows 3.1, not WfW 3.11! I just love these subtle differences!

Another Interesting find... IBM DOS 5 was the only version of IBM DOS ever to include the famous DOS editor EDIT.COM. Earlier versions came with EDLIN.COM, later versions included E.EXE.

Looking at the Amiga versions of the original TMNT game, there are actually two different releases. One from ImageWorks on a single floppy disk and another, three disks version from UltraGames. Both are using the same copy protection codes, though.
Why?! This is confusing as hell!

Okay, I must admit I was too quick to judge... "TMNT" for DOS isn't nearly as ugly as I had thought. It only runs in CGA as a standard mode. But as soon as you find the "Mode Selection Menu", you can set it to EGA and even AdLib Sound. What a difference!

I usually don't add OEM CD-ROMs to my retro collection, but this one is such a perfect reference library of iconic Windows 3.x casual games, I get the feeling it needs to be preserved and shared. Among other stuff, it includes Microsoft's Arcade 1.0 and Entertainment Packs 1 to 4.

Tonight, I uploaded the classic DOS game of "Zool: Ninja of the Nth Dimension" to the Internet Archive. I also found, restored and shared the complete Zool "PC Addendum".
Although Zool was originally a popular Amiga title from 1992, in 1993 it was ported to the IBM-PC. The game was released on a single 3.5 inch 720K floppy disk. If you love colourful retro platformers and Chupa Chups candy, then Zool is the perfect fit for you!

I was today years old when i found out: When you format a floppy diskette through Windows 3.11's File Manager, it writes a strange kind of boot sector to the disk. File system is declared as "FAT16", instead of "FAT12" and, although it's a German version, everything's in English. That's actually pretty annoying!

Here are some true 80s classics for you guys: "Hellcat Ace" & "Spitfire Ace" for the IBM-PC. From MicroProse Software.
These games from 1984 are booters, so they did not bring along a file system, but instead booted directly into the game. They're also copy protected, so I uploaded KryoFlux, MFM and 86F images, along with some gorgeous 300dpi scans of these big, old 5.25 inch diskettes.

Thanks to Digitoxin and the generosity of the retro gaming community, we finally have working MFM disk images of the legendary "Book Club" version of Lemmings - perfectly compatible with the 86Box emulator! This version from 1991 includes a few very unique and tricky levels. An awesome addition to game preservation!

Endlich hab ich sie alle beisammen! - Die drei verschiedenen Ausgaben der Bestseller Games CD von „Monkey Island“.
Die Originalpressung war noch in Farbe, danach wurde es Schwarz/Weiß. Dafür enthielten die später erschienen Discs zusätzlich Updates, Demos, Shareware und allerlei MS-DOS Gimmicks.
Gotta Catch Them All! 😁

Tonight, I'm checking out an old Sierra adventure game I never played before: "The Colonel's Bequest" from 1989.
86Box is such an awesome, little emulator. I can just fire up the virtual 386, mount the 720k floppy disk images into drive A:, pick the best graphics (EGA/VGA) and music device (MT-32) and everything just works just like that!
As a retro gamer, I think this is such a treat! :ablobcatattention:

Yes! I just found version 1.1 of IBM's mouse driver diskette from 1989. In contrast to version 1.0, this one seems to work just fine with WIndows 3.1. A sweet addition to the collection! Yay!

I'm using my rather pathetic PowerShell skills to re-organize all the PDFs and meta files from the latest eXoDOS version 6.04. While I am not a huge fan of their preservation approach in general, their collection of manuals is quite awesome!

Kurze Frage in die Runde der deutschsprachigen Retro-Community:
Besitzt von euch zufällig jemand diese CD? Das war damals die "Zweitpressung" der Bestseller Games Vol. 2 mit "Secret of Monkey Island". Nicht in Farbe, sondern in Schwarz/Weiß/Magenta, aber noch mit der ursprünglichen 07631 / 360 200 Telefonnummer?
Falls "ja", könnte mir jemand davon mal einen einigermaßen guten Scan der CD zukommen lassen? Wenn möglich eine 300-1200dpi PNG? Ich habe von allen drei Varianten CD-Images und zwei Scans von meinen Original-CDs, mir fehlt aber von der Zweitpressung noch eben dieser Scan in der Sammlung. Auf MobyGames und anderen Seiten finde ich nur einen sehr schlechten Scan, der einfach seltsam kaputt aussieht.
Falls mir jemand helfen könnte, wäre ich echt froh! Ein Boost für Reichweite wäre evtl. auch nützlich, dafür auch schonmal "Vielen, lieben Dank!"

For some time in the early 90s, included in select 10-packs of Verbatim floppy disks, there was an 11th disk containing a few games taken from Microsoft's Entertainment Pack for Windows. Once part of a simple promo campaign, these disks have turned into sought-after collectibles for fans of classic "WEP" games.
I've had disk images of these samplers for a while now, both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, but only today I realized, they were also released with 5.25 inch disks. I really love these bigger diskettes, so I think this is awesome!
I could even find a working disk image on the Internet Archive. Have fun!

Meinem ersten eigenen PC, einem günstigen 386'er von Siemens Nixdorf, lagen damals ursprünglich OEM-Disketten für Windows 3.1 bei. Die hatte ich dann auch lange benutzt. Erst einige Zeit später, irgendwann 1994, konnte ich dann auf das neue Windows for Workgroups 3.11 updaten. Als mir dann vor ein paar Tagen auf eBay zufällig genau mein alter Diskettensatz über den Weg gelaufen ist, konnte ich natürlich nicht widerstehen! 😉
Vielleicht kann den ja noch jemand gebrauchen. Es ist Windows 3.1, ohne besonderen Schnickschnack. Nur halt mit "Siemens Nixdorf" Branding. Ließ sich bei mir einwandfrei in 86Box installieren, benötigt aber noch das Y2K Update des Datei-Managers. Viel Spaß!

Nachdem Archive.org inzwischen auch wieder Uploads erlaubt, konnte ich euch heute Mittag endlich mal ein Update meiner 86Box Installation hochladen. Es handelt sich weiterhin um einen 486er DX4 mit 100MHz, PC-DOS 7, Windows 3.11. Neben ein Bisschen Feinschliff in der Konfiguration, sind jetzt auch deutlich mehr Spiele dabei und ich hab euch auch noch ein paar schöne PDF Handbücher dazugeworfen.

A few weeks ago, I discovered I had made a mistake, when I was dumping 720k floppy disks using a (non-standard) 360rpm drive. Most of these disks still worked fine, but I did run into a couple of issues with several Amiga disk-analysing tools.
Oh, well... I re-dumped everything using a normal 300rpm drive and finally re-uploaded all of the affected KryoFlux streams. Have fun!

Blockout was a puzzle video game, an unlicensed, 3D version of Tetris, published in 1989 by California Dreams. Back in the day, this was a bit of a curiosity... but I loved it!
Today, I just unpacked a very nice, boxed copy of Blockout for the Amiga. Looks like everything is complete and in good condition. So far, I only ever owned the loose diskette and manual, so this is a nice upgrade!
If you want to play, I already uploaded the game to The Internet Archive a while ago. Amiga and MS-DOS disks and manuals!

Not the first time I'm seeing this... this is actually a very old issue... but today, I just found it especially annoying!
I do love retro systems, but I must admit, both MS-DOS 6.22 and PC-DOS 2000 are super messy and flawed when it comes to memory usage and privacy protection. Tonight, I just wanted to copy a few game files to a newly created disk image. I used the following command:
COPY C:\TEMP\*.* A:\
This did work as intented, but when I checked the image a little later using the "Disk Image Tool", I noticed the system also wrote a lot of garbage data to each file's final cluster. Completely random parts of directory listings or even chunks of some README files. Imagine sharing a few innocent files with some co-workers, but your computer also secretly hands out all kinds of random snippets of your most private folders for everyone to enjoy!

Tonight, I'm using my lowest-end 86box configuration - a 25mhz 80386 with 4megs of ram - to check out the latest game from Cyningstan.
Star Cadre: Combat Class is a 2024 homebrew game for MS-DOS in glorious CGA! The entire game is not even 200kb in size. It is a kind of strategy game with role-playing game elements. Looks really fun and engaging!

Back in the 90s, a magazine series called "Bestseller Games" was super popular in Germany. They were always very cheap and included full versions of classic DOS games on CD-ROM. As it turned out, some of these games remained highly sought-after for years, so some of the issues went though a re-release. One could easily distinguish between the releases, because only the original CDs were printed in full colour.
Today I found out, at least one of these issues actually received a third release, in which they made another set of design changes to the CD-ROM and updated its content. The game was, not surprisingly, "The Secret of Monkey Island". Bestseller Games, Vol. 2.

Sometimes I just don't see the simple method to do something. Oh, well...
When it comes to Amiga emulation, I just now discovered the "CT RAW" disk image format. These .RAW files can be directly created by KryoFlux and are natively supported by WinUAE. This should also work for copy protected disks! So much easier than building custom IPFs!

And another puzzle piece falls into place... I just found a working copy of the word processor application I grew up with as a kid! I had this running on my A1200 back in 1993. Oh yes, this was hideous! But it worked!
I must admit, it feels a little disappointing the floppy disk wasn't even copy protected. I was prepared to put this into a custom-made IPF, but it ran straight from the unprotected ADF. Oh, well...

I just updated my personal Amiga collection to include all the latest Retroplay WHDLoad Packs from the English Amiga Board. In 2024 alone, the game collection added over 160 new archives. I can’t express my gratitude enough!

I recently learned that, even working with modern 3.5inch disks, not all drives are equally useful for all use cases.
I mean, I really love this SONY MPF920, made in August of 2009. It looks really modern with its circular power led and - for a regular floppy drive - it's reasonably fast. Turned out, it's too fast. Because it spins each disk at 360rpm, compared to the regular speed of 300rpm. This usually isn't a problem with 1.44MB HD disks, but it causes all kinds of headaches using Amiga and Macintosh disks and tools.
Today, I had to re-dump this "Blockout" game disk for Amiga, because the 360rpm stream I recorded a few weeks ago was running into all kinds of issues with keirf's disk-utilities. When I used one of my older, 300rpm drive, it just works!

When it comes to the classic Macintosh, I am basically a complete newb. So, to me, it already feels like a substantial achievement being able to run the Mac OS 8.1 update on my Basilisk II emulation setup. Looks like it actually worked! Yay!

I finally got around to updating my Amiga emulation setup to WinUAE 5.3.1 and WHDLoad 19.0.6849 . AmigaOS 3.2 and all the installed games are still working flawlessly.

After several hours of tinkering, I was finally able to create valid dumps of these SimCity 2000 disks for the Macintosh. Turned out only one of my disk drives, the oldest one, was compatible with the Apple DOS 800K track format. I even had to "mod" one of my floppy cables to make it work. All the other drives produced mostly garbage data.
Of course, this will all be uploaded to The Internet Archive as soon as it gets back online. 😜

I actually found an old "SimCity 2000" KryoFlux disk image for Macintosh I had lying around for years. Looks like the image file was functional after all!

Playing around with old 68k Macintosh emulation tonight. Unfortunately, I never owned such a computer as a kid... the closest I ever got to this was an iMac G3 running MacOS 9.

Die beiden ersten Teile der berühmten "Monkey Island"-Reihe wurden schon wenige Jahre nach ihrem ursprünglichen Release quasi verschenkt. Anfang 1998 erschienen sowohl die GameStar, als auch die PC-Player mit einer Vollversion auf ihrer Heft-CD.
Falls heute noch jemand daran Spaß hat, gibt's hier nun beide Discs im Internet Archive. Jeweils komplette ISOs inkl. schöner 300dpi JPEG-Scans der CDs.

Hi, [@aaronk6](https://mastodon.social/@aaronk6 ) . I just wanted to let you know I found another official version of "QUAAK". This is version v1.1, which was sold as a compilation with the game "Bubble". But it's still from Data Becker. The intro screen looks quite a bit different with a big picture of a frog and the game is dated from 06.12.1992, in contrast to version v1.0, which was from 20.03.1992.
Anyway, I will upload the complete game to The Internet Archive within the next few days.

Hat von euch zufällig jemand eine digitale Fassung des PC DOS 7.0/2000 Handbuchs in deutscher Sprache? Oder weiß, wo man eine bekommen kann? Das einzige, was ich bisher finden konnte, ist die englische Fassung des Handbuchs aus dem Jahr 1995..
Ich hab das Handbuch in Papierform hier, aber bevor ich knapp 700 Seiten einscannen muss, dachte ich, ich frag mal.

Quaak! ist eines dieser seltenen Spiele für Windows 3.x, das viele gar nicht mehr kennen. Ein kleiner, aber feiner Klon des bekannten Automatenspiels "Frogger".
Veröffentlicht wurde es 1992 im Rahmen der "Goldenen Serie" von Data Becker und ab sofort ist das Spiel auch vollständig, mit Handbuch und Originaldiskette, im Internet Archive verfügbar.

Today, I was finally able to complete my collection of PC DOS 2000 boxes, at least for the German versions. I unpacked the CD-ROM Edition from 1998, which seems to be a bit smaller than its 3.5" floppy disk variant.
By the way: The CD-ROM includes a complete set of floppy disk images, which makes it even more an awesome collector's item!

I just upgraded my virtual 486 to 86Box v4.2.1. Thankfully everything seems to be working fine!

Out of nostalgia for my old Amiga A1200 from 1993, I just got this beautiful set of original Workbench 3.0 diskettes. I was looking specifically for true "Commodore" disks, because I want nothing to do with these fake "ESCOM" re-releases.
Luckily, all the disks were in pristine condition and worked perfectly in KryoFlux and WinUAE.
Of course, everything will be uploaded to The Internet Archive later tonight.

As we all know, defragmenting your data is no longer a thing on modern SSDs. It no longer speeds up anything, but rather hurts your memory cells. But yeah... it makes me kinda sad. Because it used to be one of the most satisfying things ever!

I finally managed to install some proper drivers for my virtual 86Box graphics card on Windows 3.11. This is a Diamond Stealth-32 with only 2MB of video RAM, so it can only reach 65535 colors in a 800x600 resolution. Still a much needed improvement from the regular SVGA drivers and their 256 colors. Simply beautiful!

Saturday night and I'm still checking out PC DOS 2000 compared to MS-DOS 6.22. Both systems are very compatible, but there are loads of small tweaks and differences. IBM mostly worked on polishing stuff, but a few of the included tools also got a complete overhaul.
UNDELETE for example got a fancy graphical user interface! This is sooo much nicer than what Microsoft delivered! Makes me wish PC DOS would have gained more popularity back in the day over its counterpart.

I just learned I've been a total IDIOT.. since.. FOREVER !!! Okay, here's the story:
I started having my own PC in the summer of 1993. My first DOS must have been MS-DOS 6.0, but that was quickly upgraded to 6.2. That was still in 1993. After the upgrade, I manually extracted the MS-DOS-Shell files from my old 6.0 disks, because that program was no longer included by default in DOS 6.2. For years, I kept a zipfile with DOSSHELL.EXE, DOSSHELL.COM and DOSSHELL.HLP. It always worked. It didn't look very pretty, but it worked!
Little did I know, I did it all wrong! For over 30 years now! Because I was completely ignorant of DOSSHELL.VID, DOSSHELL.GRB and DOSSHELL.INI !!! These 3 files have different names on the install disks and are only renamed and copied by using the original SETUP.BAT. Only with these files, MS-DOS-Shell is capable of running in a graphical vga mode! This looks so much better!
I guess, I need to re-think my life now. Good night. ;-)

Windows 3.0 sah, im Vergleich zu seinen Nachfolge-Versionen 3.1 und 3.11, einfach noch sooo seltsam aus! Viele der bekannten Tools sind bereits vorhanden, aber es mutet einfach alles subtil "anders" an. Alte Software finde ich einfach spannend... Es gibt da so viel Unbekanntes zu entdecken!

Okay, I just learned something.. but it also gave me quite a headache!
I had received an "Incorrect MS-DOS version" error message from EDLIN.EXE, when running it from an official MS-DOS 6 Supplemental Disk from within MS-DOS 6. That... shouldn't happen.
Took me a few moments to figure that one out. Several days ago, I had upgraded that very 86Box installation from MS-DOS 5.0 to 6.0. Because of this, SETVER.EXE still remembered EDLIN.EXE to be a "5.00" application, which confused the modern EDLIN.EXE to throw that error message. It worked fine again after I removed it from the version table.
Let's just say, I had the urge to slam my head into a wall for a moment.
That was fun!
