Found it.
"The “smoke” produced by HC devices is gaseous Zinc Chloride (ZnCl2), a known lethal compound that induces heavy metal poisoning (“metal fume fever”); chemically burns dermal, bronchial, and gastrointestinal epithelia; and bioaccumulates. Despite well-established impacts, US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents deployed HC in Portland Oregon to quell Black Lives Matter protests in July 2020."

Yes you're right about that. They did not only used CS gas.
They also used poisonous gas with [I think zinc it was] that can make you actually sick.
There was a reader and a study about that, let's see if I can find it.

I've been thinking so just let's get better gas masks, then I read this:
"Even when using a properly fitting gas mask,
however, ZnCl2 is absorbed into the body via dermal uptake. Further, given its capacity to
bioaccumulate and cause delayed severe inflammation responses, ZnCl2 exposure is measured cumulatively..."
Some findings about exposure to the poison when having some distance to the deployment:
"Under ideal conditions in a wide-open field at night, the concentration of ZnCl2 produced by a
typical HC grenade is high enough that an unmasked individual 200 yd (three city blocks in Portland, 183 m) from detonation has a maximum of 24 min of safety before significant acute health symptoms appear.
An individual a 1,000 yd (0.9 km) away is still at risk and only has 2.5 h It is unclear how ZnCl2 dissipates through a densely-gassed, tree-lined urban landscape within a river valley like Portland, but reported signs and symptoms indicate that it spread widely, entered the stormwater system that flows to the Willamette River, and passed through or around protective equipment worn by journalists, protesters, medics, legal observers, and bystanders."

I use a hierarchical Bayesian model that combined multiple observation streams to compile community-collected video and photographic evidence and estimate that DHS deployed enough grenades to kill or maim hundreds of people."
