oh also, something i forgot -
if kiki is installed in a subdirectory the last line will need changed to match:RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /subdirectory/index.php?page=$1 [NC,L,QSA]
otherwise it'll try sending the redirect to the higher directory which does not quite work lol

also glad that the solution is more or less the same for nginx! also agree that regexes are wild - they're fascinating and super useful but trying to put them together or take them apart feels like wizardry ahha
the only issue (insofar as it is expected behavior but i would like to improve it) i can see with the new htaccess rules are that it doesn't direct you to 404 if it can't find a page, it just loads a blank page. which is... fine? it could do worse things. but it'd be cool if i can figure how to make them direct to a 404
i'm also going to look into a php router - if it works how i think it does that might alleviate needing to worry about the htaccess rules at all, which would be a big help here i think. i found an example php router setup i'm gonna test soon.
i'll let you know if i make progress in either one of those!

@npub1yqw…ywz8 i've gotten the htaccess easy urls thing working with the info from [this](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/18406156/redirect-all-to-index-php-using-htaccess ) post on stackoverflow & wanted to share my findings with you
i feel like this isn't *exactly* the best way to be doing this, but! it works for the time being, so i'll take it
(if anybody reads this who knows more about htaccess rules and has insight i'm very down to hear, i wanna learn more)
what i am pretty sure the original htaccess script does:
"if the file or directory exists, route it through index.php. if it doesn't, route it back to root"
which is honestly what i would Like to do - but something in there is being naughty with the way kiki builds queries, i think. maybe. i feel like the htaccess rules are doing what they are told to do, but kiki's urls are confusing it? for lack of words?
anyway here's what i'm running right now:<code>RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /index.php?page=$1 [NC,L,QSA] </code>
the initial RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L] does not seem to be catching anything. if what i did later in the rules is anything to go by it's because it doesn't know what to do without ?page= but i'm not sure how to pop that in there in a way that makes it behave, so it's omitted until i figure that out
the two RewriteConds stay the same. if i read them right they're still looking for files/directories that do not exist and then passing them to the next rule. they're intended to be part of the "if these don't exist send them back to index" but we're kinda repurposing that
the last rule changes . to ^(.*)$ so it's not just catching one character it's catching the full string
the original /index.php target needed /index.php?page=$1 - there is, from the substack link, apparently a way to make it so that the ?page= isn't necessary to explicitly state, but for now, we need it, otherwise kiki won't direct us to the correct pageNC
for "ignore case", L for "last", and QSA to append query strings instead of dropping them (i don't think the last one is super necessary for what kiki is doing, but maybe the wiki functionality could use it? maybe?)
this probably still needs some level of polish / checking over to make sure everything's good, but, it works - i hope this helps!

(i would like to put files there for people to download from my site for tidiness purposes but i don't wanna confuse kiki)

yep - it looks like the easy urls are being read, but they're not being pointed to the correct file
i've tried poking a handful of other similar htaccess rewriteengine setups and they seem to all do one of two things: all urls either load the home page, or the wamp localhost page minus all javascript and css
(on nfsn which is a proper actual webhost opposed to local testing, it just makes everything load the home page)
to me it feels like somewhere in there it's not able to grab the subpages and just redirects back to home as a fallback? but i'm not sure how to like... visualize what exactly it's trying to do

it's all good! fwiw, wamp and nfsn both use apache - i realize i didn't mention that in the first post, oops
i am going to see if i can figure out what exactly is happening, once i figure it out i'll share what i find in case it can help someone else out

@npub1yqw…ywz8 hey! question for kiki: i'm trying to enable easy permalinks (on both nearlyfreespeech & my local wamp server) and they both seem to be running into a similar issue: on nfsn, all links load the home page. like, the links are correct but they don't load the proper content. on wamp, the same thing happens, but it jumps me up to the wamp config page. the url is correct but the content isn't
i'm about 99% sure that i don't have something configured all the way properly but i do not know apache well enough to properly troubleshoot what exactly. do you have any advice?

honestly i only really do the opinion rewards for the play credit. i goof off on (most of) the responses
i also use [trackmenot](https://www.trackmenot.io/ ) which sends randomized search queries on a timer to fuck with google's profiling. i'm pretty sure this is where this query came from. i haven't used google search for anything in close to a year, but it's really hard to completely disentangle myself from them, so i figure i'll fuck with them instead
i have had some *weird* rewards surveys but this one absolutely took the whole cake. i'm glad y'all got as much of a laugh out of it as i did
