A friend has a belt-drive e-bike. Single speed though, not a gearbox. It's certainly nice and quiet in a way chain drives don't stay for long.

before JCB clarified the whole concept by mentioning waterwheels, I was imagining a thing like a soccer ball with each face being a little bucket (then all you need is a axle in some higher dimension) ...
The droplet accumulates charge evenly on top until it gets a tiny nudge to break the symmetry from brownian motion or whatever, and then once it's rotating the flow will keep it going.

Maybe think of the charged particles falling like rain, the droplets get wet on top then rotate until the charges are at the bottom where they drip off, in the meantime the new top side of the droplet is getting wet and so on.
I wonder if the axes of rotation tend to align in some way?
It takes energy to maintain the electric field as it leaks, so there's no thermodynamic mystery here 🙂

Except what if I'm connecting to a big-screen TV a long way away? I need all my UI elements to be quite a bit bigger in physical measurement. Not a totally made up example, I do this quite a bit when traveling, plug the laptop into the hotel TV and use the laptop screen + TV as two screens which are similar in subtended angle even though they're very different sizes.

a lot of leftie/progressive types[1] are saying no, don't say anything nice about him, or Harris, for that matter. Don't support them, they are imperfect, you're going to need to demand things of them later, any kind of enthusiasm now will prevent that.
But that's not how any of this works. You can say all the nice things you want, you can express your joy at the two least worst candidates anyone's seen in a long time ... and still hold them to account, still tell them that they made a promise to be better and that's what you are demanding of them now.
No-one believes you were maybe going to vote for the other guys anyway.
