yes, and also misconceptions: I need to learn to use scissors with the right hand because the nun in my elementary school refused to sit with me to help with my left hand (mimicry is such a pain when it's reverse). Also many many tools are simply mass produced with right-hand in mind, from homewares to specialist equipment, which basically forces many left-handed people to learn to use their non-dominant hand anyway

Nearly universal seems a bit of a stretch, though I can only speak from personal experience and not clear data. I'm ambidextrous (with specific tasks solely left-hand and other solely right-hand, and some that overlap) and if I have to make a sort of rapid calculation, I would say that roughly 1 every 15/20 people I know is left-handed. I don't dispute right-hand use is more common, but if my experience is anything to go by, there's a very large chunk of people who aren't

on the specific of "AI", various had made their case to call it fascist, and in large part I agree, though I sometimes still think the label is applied more as a big negative descriptor than serious reflection. Also, who are really the fascist here? The TechBros? The governments? Is the technology itself fascist? When China uses it, is it fascist too? I think a good argument should address also these questions.

Which isn't fine, but it's not "a fascist project".

In the specific argument I had some days ago with the account above, I contested that "misinformation is a fascist project" is a drastic and skewed way of describing a phenomenon that has deeper roots and that more than often happens in good faith. Or, like the same account is doing, to reposition yourself within a group: I didn't discuss AI with this person, I didn't say people can't use the word fascist for AI, and I expressed a concern on how this word is applied so loosely.

It's the same attitude in reverse, when right-wingers accuse everything decent being "woke" or being against a genocide as "antisemitic", effectively diluting and decontextualising the word, until they're rendered so meaningless that they become useless. I think words matter, as language shape our reality, so we need to use words appropriately. Also, I think we need to be careful of describing certain phenomenon only through one lens.

This is typical of a society like ours, in which people run constantly on high emotional peaks: any case of contested memory becomes "gaslighting", every mistake in your political analysis becomes "fascist", or more recently, I saw someone speaking about the crimes of the Iranian regime being called a zionist (though they're big supporters of the Palestinian cause).

I think Eco's work on understanding fascism as a social phenomenon needs to be read in this context, offering us a tool to recognise the dynamics underlying the phenomenon, and going beyond the aesthetics and the specificity of 1920s Italy. And in principle, I am not oppose to the use of "fascism" as an umbrella term. I however notice a tendency to weaponise the word "fascist" to position oneself within a certain discourse to automatically get legitimacy of an argument

I'm fine with "fascism" as a sort of Umbrella term. Post war Italian fascists went through a big rebranding as some of the original values (imperialism, antisemitism, colonialism, corporal punishment) went out of fashion in the Neoliberal era (it's a simplification, I know), which also contributed to a general washing of Mussolini's regime (remember: Italy was the Western country with the strongest Communist party)

The amazing thing is that this account links my comment below and she is actually misquoting me, taking everything out of context, and not accepting that for Italians “Fascist” means a very specific thing: 20 years of dictatorship, years of terrorism, and the spectre of the ex-exponents of the regime still in our government. In the political discourses I grew up in, the tendency was to use the identifier for each regime: Nazi for Germany, Franco for Spain, etc.

Production, we must massively decrease production. Stop putting the onus solely on the consumer. Over production, programmed obsolescence, and cheap products are the problem. In many many many sector, production can be stopped and yet our life would be barely altered. But stop talking down to the consumers while companies have entire business models based on forcing you to buy an updated version of something.

Epstein exploited the dynamics the entire system was already built on: you might say that your exploitation in a company is not as violent as the exploitation of workers in illegal mines, but it doesn't take away that they are both exploitative systems. The fact that someone can write to their wealthy bestie "you are just the victim of the *hysteria* around sexual assault" is not the same of assaulting someone, but it still rooted in a misogynistic worldview that condones abuse.

The psychology of Chomsky is nothing special, it's exactly how a famous and powerful man grown up under patriarchy, capitalism, and media narcissism, would behave. Epstein's friends aren't people propped up by him. They are all figures that society already designed as special: they had influence, reputational power, and a large pool of people looking up to them. In narcissistic dynamics, violence is the culmination of the relationship, never the beginning.

It's easy to see that when power is unchecked, the corruption that comes with it can only grow. The men cozying up with Epstein have exactly all these traits in common: powerful figures that society already put on some sort of pedestal, the special people, the real thinkers, extraordinary men. Ambition and self-confidence over integrity are the most rewarded aspects, because unfortunately they are also the ones who get most grants, issued by other sociopath wealthy powerful men (private or public). First, Academia is a hierarchy. You start as a student and little by little you progress to graduate, post-graduate, post-doc, early-career researcher, research fellow, lecturer, associate professor, professor, dean, director, rector, chancellor, etc.
Each step is a screening point: fewer and fewer people are allowed to pass. The gods of metrics used for this screening come straight from a business buzzword handbooks: impact, entrepreneurship, leadership.

It's not that I don't understand the shock, but really, who cares about Chomsky's psychology.
Probably is my allergy to cult, but to me Chomsky has always felt more like a grifter than a genuine thinker.
He was good on American Imperialism, but lacked any critical analysis of situations like Syria, Bosnia, or Ukraine, and he was totally dismissive of the leftist voices from these areas.
That said, if we see how academia works,"Chomsky loves Epstein" becomes very understandable

The real question from the Epstein files should be about unchecked power in patriarchal capitalist societies, instead, we have another leftist scholar writing words and words on the life & psychology of another pathetic narcissistic man who loved his guru position and access to power more than genuine intellectual critique. I just unsubscribed from The Counteroffensive. I really followed Tim Mak and his crew on Ukraine, and believe they were providing very crucial reporting. However, their take on Venezuela unlawful bombing and abduction was appalling. Regardless of what Maduro is (and I don't have nice words for him) the US invading another country because they don't like their regime and wants control over their resources IS NOT AN END TO DICTATORSHIP, IT'S REPLACING IT.

A couple of days ago, my phone updated and now I got the Liquid Glass. I don’t even know how any designer could have thought this to be aesthetically a good choice, a nail in the coffin of clear line and geometry graphic design prided itself since its inception. All carefully designed icons and logos are now randomly deformed, the beautiful drawing on my screen background for ever stained. It looks like AI slop. Because that’s what’s next

I have a question. Because everyone is integrating these stupid chatbots for "summaries", I am very skeptical of having my work circulating, even just internally within the university cohort, because I don't want my stuff to be fed to LLMs.
Is there a way to export these files in a was that when people feeds them to their "assistants" the assistants' dataset gets "poisoned" and can scrap it properly?

Any #wasps expert here? We might have a queen hibernating in our bedroom, and would love some advice. I might have disturbed her this evening, and she started buzzing around for some minutes. Went out, closed her inside, and by the time we returned with a cup to catch her she has disappeared and has gone completely silent. Windows and doors shut, so we believe she has probably crawled in some remote corner within the wardrobe. What should we do? Leave or find her?

As an illustrator who publishes a lot of her work on the web, often publicly, I feel is worth reminding people that no, just because an image is found on the web, you have no rights to use it without the explicit consent of the author. There are grey areas of course, but they should be always approached with care.
If you try to contact someone to seek consent/permission to use their work, and they do not answer, the result is that you don't have the permission, so you shouldn't use the image

The class solidarity that is being shown towards the Palestinian struggle is deeply moving, I think. From prisoners to other prisoners, the longing for freedom knows no boundaries and is stronger than capital.
That's probably why they are using everything to suppress it.

I find amazing that we still deny how in current societies *not being racist* is an active choice, while racism is the default, as the nation-state political & economic system is founded on and needs racism to exist & function. We all grow with internalised racism, from jokes to stereotypes, that is why the far-right rhetoric is so powerful: people learn to otherise people from very young age, so racist slogans resonate with the most part of the population.

So, for the Israeli opposition, the biggest problem is not that they are mass starving 2 million people, stealing land, raping abducted Palestinian, carpet bombing a strip in an ecocide voted to kill all forms of lives. No the problem is that they will need visas for traveling to Europe and that the EU might refuse to issue them.

It's an economy of war and destruction within the parochial double standard that some are displaying in "Russia is a bad empire and Eastern Europe needs defence", in which people like Ukrainians are used as the people worth saving on the expenses of the Palestinians. the core principle of being on the Left is to tackle inequality, to achieve egalitarianism. Anything that doesn’t prioritise this isn’t the Left.
