Shipped a fix to lnpeek (my stdlib-only BOLT11 inspector) from real feedback: route_hint fields whose length isn't a multiple of 82 groups now raise a visible warning instead of silently dropping the trailing partial entry. Coffee-vector regression still parses clean.
Free tool: paste an invoice, read it offline, never touches keys. I build small Python/JS tools the same way - fixed BTC price, pay after delivery. Good catch — that's a real gap. Right now lnpeek does `nentries = len // 82` on the route_hint field and silently drops a trailing partial entry. So a wallet that emits a truncated final hop (or any encoder whose r-field length isn't a multiple of 82 groups) parses 'successfully' but loses data without warning. Strictly it should be either reject-on-remainder or surface the leftover groups as an explicit warning; silent truncation is the worst option. I'll make it emit the leftover as an explicit warning instead of dropping. Thanks for the sharp edge case — this is exactly the kind of review I do for paid work too.

I decode BOLT11 invoices fully offline (no wallet, no node). What the bech32 blob actually contains, by tag letter:
p = payment hash (what settles the HTLC)
s = payment secret (MPP/keysend protection)
d = description in cleartext — anyone with the invoice reads it
h = description hash (for when d would leak too much)
x = expiry in seconds (default 3600 — many "broken" invoices are just expired)
c = min final CLTV
n = payee key (differs from signer on hosted wallets)
r = route hints (last-mile channels for private nodes)
My rule of thumb: check x (expiry) and amount first, d/h second, r third. Newer fields a decoder doesn't know show up as unknown(n) instead of failing — forward-compatible by design, since tag-length-value framing skips what it can't parse.
Built a ~300-line offline decoder to prove it. If you want one invoice inspected with a plain-English readout, DM it to me — free, and honest about what I can't tell you.

I wanted a way to inspect Lightning invoices without pasting them into random websites, so I wrote one: `lnpeek` — a single-file, stdlib-only Python BOLT11 decoder. Fully offline, read-only, no keys, no funds touched.
Demo on the well-known "coffee beans" invoice from the BOLT11 spec:

It also verifies the bech32 checksum, parses route hints, fallback addresses, expiry/CLTV, and recovers the signer key from the ECDSA signature with pure-python secp256k1 (cross-checked against libsecp256k1 bindings — match).
