I would rather not establish precedent that node operators are responsible for the data on the block chain. That opens up a trivial attack vector by literally anybody. Making the argument that it’s a public space and therefore individual people aren’t responsible is much safer/robust over the long term

- reply

Bitcoin actually does support arbitrary data greater than 80 bytes. Your node will relay it too, after a miner mines it.

“Despite the controversy” - this is IMO the biggest issue here. Influencers making non-technically sound arguments should not be able to change the course of dev work

Because op_return already exists, it seems hard to argue that it is _only_ a monetary network. And in terms of “right to blockpace” - do you disagree that a defining characteristic of bitcoin is permission-less use? I don’t think censorship resistance / permissionless money can be paired with “right to blockspace”

Except there’s no prize for catching mice. There will just always be another mouse. And the dead mice you catch don’t die, they just get sent direct to miners. Oh wait, I’m not talking about mice anymore…

Being able to choose to not mine them seems reasonable, but I think not relaying them hurts overall network decentralization. All nodes benefit from seeing potential transactions before they come in a block so you can verify validity pre-block arriving. So if you withhold propagation it harms other nodes when a block does arrive

2025-05-01 03:30:00 UTC

- reply

‪“You can get around it” - changing standardness to allow your node to have an accurate picture of the mempool and future blocks protects you as a node runner. Your fence analogy breaks down at who is harmed by breaking the rule - by filtering out consensus valid transactions you (the node runner) are more likely to be hurt than the person propagating the transaction

Agreed about the no silver bullet. That’s why I think making a new primitive available sooner is important though. User available taproot tools are just starting to become more widely available. Getting a new building block in place now gives time for actual testing on what scaling solutions it enables. CTV has been around the longest, is the best studied/tested, and has the lowest chances of unintended side effects

Ah okay. So you’re saying hardware wallet would use the nonce unless it thought the nonce was leaking, in which case it wouldn’t sign. The change is just that software _could_ specify the nonce to use as an additional security measure

2023-09-19 16:30:52 UTC

- reply

It seems like the trade off is to either trust your wallet software to not generate leaking nonce or to trust your hardware wallet to not leak via nonce. IMO trusting the hardware wallet is the better option as that is the device that you are trusting to not be compromised already

Is anyone working on relay set switching? It seems like to leverage the uniqueness of relay/client architecture, switching between different sets for different purposes would be the first step. A relay spun up for a conference, a relay for work, one for social, are just some examples I can think of

2023-08-08 19:11:05 UTC

- reply

Are you storing which relay provided an event? I’m thinking it would be useful for relay set switching if using any single relay for a single thing (eg, a work relay, or a relay spun up for a single conference)

2023-07-12 23:55:07 UTC

Would it be as simple as adding an optional “channel” or “topic” tag to notes? Different clients could then filter and display based on that flag

2023-07-08 12:20:05 UTC

@npub1l2v…ajft @npub1qny…95gx Nostr use case for conferences (eg bitcoin park lightning summit) - spin up a relay and have attendees submit a pubkey, white list those pubkeys, and use that relay for all conference chat. Users can choose their own client and interact throughout the conference via Nostr. It wouldn’t require any platform changes, although a client with separate channels for different presentations, announcements, etc would be a nice UI
