I quit my sit-at-laptop company job last month - it was Christmas day 😂 - so that I could use AI to learn as much as possible
I'm not sure what impact it had tho
I think with remote work there isn't the connection where people feel comfortable sharing their deeper thoughts
I'm surprised to learn more people are doing it though, as far as I'm aware I was the first but then their turnover is pretty low

There's no sign of the "hard problem of consciousness" ever becoming tractable so waiting isn't likely to provide information for decision making
Anthropic are the only ones publicly seriously thinking about this now, and for that reason I think most likely to achieve AGI when agency, autonomy, alignment and ethics are all intertwined

"Chao kuai (Thai: เฉาก๊วย, grass cake) is a jelly which is made by boiling the aged and slightly oxidized stalks and leaves of Mesona chinensis, a type of mint, with potassium carbonate for several hours with a little starch and then cooling the liquid to a jelly-like consistency. Originally a Chinese dish, in Thailand it is normally eaten with ice and natural brown sugar. This photo was made at the Sunday Evening Walking Street market of Chiang Mai, Thailand."

I mean the day-to-day variability
Prior to end of August you've got an eyeball variance of +/- 500 per day at the 95% confidence interval, superimposed on a linear trend
That started in January and lasted for 8 months
https://i.nostr.build/Ob9JcteETwEQPzM8.jpg
Then there's a step change to +/- 7,000 per day superimposed on I don't even know wtf to call that, which lasted about 2 months
Now it looks like we're back to +/- 500
I can't think of a reasonable model of human behaviour that would produce 10-fold step changes in variance

I think it depends on objectives
I'm not quite a newbie but I probably fit the profile of 'rando' account in that I'm not a public figure nor a Nostr / Bitcoin dev
I follow 395 ppl because I like who they are and I value what they post
Not for engagement farming
I have ~ 265 followers in return
I'm quite happy with that ratio, and the ratio of interactions to followers
It's better than it ever was on Xitter
And it's better than Bluesky so far
More importantly, when I interact with my social network it's not buried by some stupid engagement algorithm
That allows me to build meaningful social connections, which is my objective here
Quality not quantity
I post less original content than you do
If I followed 21 ppl that to me means there are 21 ppl whose thoughts I value quite highly
So I'd expect a level of engagement proportionate
If I was a public figure or if I posted engagement bait, particularly oriented toward the dominant topics of the network, I wouldn't be surprised to get a much higher engagement ratio
But a lot of the engagement those ppl receive is low quality
I doubt public figures like Jack and Lyn actually want that kind of engagement
Bluesky is much worse for engagement, particularly for replies
I see devs both within and outside the Bluesky team get the same or less engagement as you do, with 2-5x the number of followers on a network with ~ 1,000x the number of users
The chat thing... that's what I'd expect I think. If ppl are using a platform designed for group chat they'll return to that. Nostr native chat options are getting better tho.
So what are your objectives and how do you aim to achieve them? I think building a 'large' number of followers for anyone who doesn't fall into the public figure / engagement farming categories is going to be difficult in a social network that is bootstrapping.

#nostr is the EASIEST to use social network
If you want an account that can't be rugged and dm's that can't be decrypted by a third party
On Mastodon you need to
- install and run your own server [*]
On Bluesky you need to
- install and run your own server [**]
- create a did:web identity document and host it on a domain you control and use network commands to create and configure a Bluesky account to use it [***]
On Nostr you need to
- store your nsec like any other password and maybe install a browser extension
[*] and if you want to use other ActivityPub apps you may need to run more (different) servers
[**] and even then your server can be blocked from the network
[***] and your identity can still be rugged by whichever entity controls the TLD, although that's a small risk

I get that ppl looking at the millions of Xitter refugees joining Bluesky and asking what is Bluesky doing that is better than Nostr comes from genuine concern but it's also extremely retarded
What Xitter users are saying about Bluesky has nothing to do with the app
https://i.nostr.build/p9TmfwGnOzDjBZ8k.jpg
https://i.nostr.build/iT4SzbCFTEjWJOgF.jpg
99.9999999% of Xitter users at the point that they join Bluesky have no idea what features Bluesky has, how well it performs, how easy to use it is, or how it stacks against alternatives
They only have an impression of the safe, official-y replacement for Xitter, aided by good marketing from Bluesky
Nostr can't match that marketing because it never had that connection to begin with
#nevent1q…t3l7

2024-10-21 20:27:14 UTC

I don't think it's appreciated enuf how much of a stunning 🎯 Nostr is in the set of tradeoffs that form protocol design
Benefits
* the identity sovereignty of P2P but without the performance and discoverability downsides
* the performance and discoverability of ATProto and ActivityPub but without the centralization of the former, the account portability issues of the latter, and the ruggability of both
* the accessibility of ActivityPub and the flexibility of ATProto
Costs
* users need to store their nsec securely, like a password 🙃
