If I were watching this security incident from the Bitcoin sidelines, I think I would be left with a few pretty strong impressions.
First, shit happens. This is awful. Real people lost money, trust, sleep, and probably a fair bit more than that.
But I would also be struck by how quickly the entire Bitcoin industry and community responded.
Competitors started helping competitors. Companies committed resources. Developers, researchers, and ordinary people jumped in to track funds, share warnings, investigate what happened, and try to prevent as much additional harm as possible. A lot of them were helping complete strangers, often for no reason other than that they could.
Prominent Bitcoiners who had promoted the affected product apologized almost immediately and expressed genuine remorse for the role they may have played. Those with technical skills used their reach to give instructions, troubleshoot problems, and help affected people directly, often one on one. Those without those skills offered something just as human: they made themselves available to anyone who needed someone to talk to.
And the people who tried to dodge responsibility were called out almost immediately.
Technical investigations started right away. Companies and individuals shared their findings with affected parties in careful and appropriate ways, giving people time to fix vulnerabilities and protect themselves without publishing information that could create even more damage.
The global and technically capable nature of the Bitcoin community also mattered. It gave the response near-immediate access to powerful AI systems, including tools such as Kimi that may be restricted or unavailable in certain jurisdictions. Someone, somewhere, could access the tools, understand the problem, and put them to work for everyone.
The incident also dragged the conversation back to basics: education, personal responsibility, and one of the most important requirements of secure Bitcoin self-custody, strong and genuinely random entropy when private keys are created.
To me, this is Bitcoin’s Battle of Cannae.
It was a devastating early encounter with AI-assisted attack. It exposed serious weaknesses in how Bitcoin is used, secured, and entrusted to third-party tools. But it also forced the entire ecosystem to learn, adapt, and harden its custody practices, security standards, and supporting infrastructure before the much larger wave of AI-enabled attacks reaches every other industry.
Most industries and asset classes would struggle to respond this way. They do not have Bitcoin’s combination of shared principles, common values, collective responsibility, global reach, and an unusually technically adept community.
If I were evaluating Bitcoin from the outside, I would think about all of that very carefully.
And I would weight my allocation accordingly.

Rearmament is rarely sold as destiny.
It arrives as payroll,
As apprenticeships,
As reason to keep the town alive another decade.

History arrives as a push notification
And we swipe it away
To see the weather.
By noon the first ceasefire is rumored,
By one denied,
By two revised,
By three explained by an anonymous source,
By four superseded by footage no one can verify,
And by dinner we are saying only
Did you see the latest,
Meaning not the game, not the fashion,
But the same old panic in newer graphics.

“And once again
The crisis is put off and things look better
And we feel negotiation is not vain—
Save my skin and damn my conscience.
And negotiation wins,
If you can call it winning,
And here we are—just as before—safe in our skins;
Glory to God for Munich.
And stocks go up and wrecks
Are salved and politicians’ reputations
Go up like Jack-on-the-Beanstalk; only the Czechs
Go down and without fighting.”

Curious if you’ve changed your view on the 4 year cycle? It seems like it’s not dead (yet).

Have had a 30 kW Kohler automatic standby on a building for 17 years. It has run almost flawlessly, including through two hurricanes where power was out for 3 and 8 days. Maintenance has been minimal. It runs on natural gas.
Installed a 20 kW Cummins natural gas unit on another building recently. It also worked flawlessly during extended outages.
The phone apps and web interfaces are garbage on all of them.
They are very simple, basically just an engine and a generator. If you have a local Kohler service person, it might be worth getting the longer warranty. If not, I would prefer the flexibility of using a local service provider.

When my little girl was four, she was really into a kids’ math show. One night after her lullaby, she told me she loved me a “sideways eight.” There are no adequate words to describe the feelings in those moments.

I’m 15 minutes in and waiting for a second bank employee to confirm the transaction. It costs $80.
Do they even know that we can zip money around the world instantly for cents? What are they even doing?!

ChatGPT refuses to make a meme about the housing price economic conundrum....
https://m.primal.net/QGWW.jpg

2025-04-06 16:52:37 UTC

There’s considerable debate in Canada and the U.S. about “housing affordability.” People want younger generations to have easier access to affordable housing, yet almost nobody wants their own home’s value to drop.
In highly financialized economies like ours, housing acts as critical collateral underpinning substantial economic activity. A broad-based decline in housing prices isn’t feasible without risking severe economic instability, which would trigger a liquidity injection, which would raise the price of housing....
The first political leaders who clearly acknowledge this paradox and thoughtfully address potential solutions will earn significant credibility.

Community currencies + chaumian mints (i.e. Fedimints) = potential wildfire of adoption. If it got momentum it would be hard to stop. Who wants to go after Main Street?
Imagine subverting the monetary system using a new version of “Downtown Bucks” 🤣.
