I am still studying MSTY and IMST so this is a response from my first impressions looking at the product.
From the way I see it, MSTY isn’t about stacking sats. It’s about hedging out purchasing power volatility in the near term. Just like “never sell your bitcoin” at some point, you’ve got to manage the uncertainty associated with bitcoin. I’m 5+ years into this journey…and the returns for the cohort of bitcoiners who discovered bitcoin around the time I did are the worst 4-year hodl risk-adjusted returns in Bitcoin’s 16 year history.
The uncertainty has led me to pass over good fiat mine opportunities and sell a little bitcoin at inopportune times (like tax season - 25% below the ATH). Using a (small) portion of your wealth generating fiat yield while still getting bitcoin exposure in an attempt to hedge bitcoin’s volatility isn’t *obviously* stupid.
Now if MSTR ends up imploding because they don’t have their BTC then that’s a different argument.

Went to install a replacement toilet in our 1960s rancher. Long story short: it seemed more involved than I was anticipating, and my situation this week would benefit from the convenience of a quick, dreamless install so I called a plumber and they showed up within 30 minutes of my call.
Plumber - nice guy - proceeds to tell me, “oh yeah, you basically have it right, but all you need is a new flange (a $40 part). Then put the wax ring down (which we already have). Then mount the toilet (which we already have).”
He then proceeded to quote $500. For at most 30 minutes of work - probably 15 minutes for him - and a $40 (retail) part. To install a product that cost a couple hundred dollars. This is symptomatic a failure of a currency. The fact that anyone would consider paying that type of rate for that type of work that would take that amount of time is ludicrous.
I’ll be installing a toilet tonight after my daughter goes to bed.

Perhaps this is why folks are skeptical about NOSTR … have been on NOSTR for almost a year. Have zapped a lot, especially relative to my network size. Ask a simple question (not related to bitcoin) … tag most of the highly followed accounts I respect … receive1 like.

But - yeah - NOSTR has major issues and the skepticism is justified. The incentives just aren’t there to encourage growth and nurturing. There isn’t a mechanism to get smaller accounts engagement.
Understand the criticisms about algorithms but in theory they can help achieve network effects (before they’re abused to limit reach).

Bitcoin mining is a ruthless competition. If a bitcoin miner is paying too much for electric, they will eventually go bankrupt and turn off.
Electricity is a primary cost of Bitcoin miners. Bitcoin mining is geographically agnostic, modular, interruptible demand. Bitcoin miners will find the pockets of free electricity wherever they exist.
And waste, curtailed, and stranded energy sources are plentiful out there in the real world. Eventually Bitcoin miners will be mining exclusively with “free” electricity. Or they will go bankrupt.

Network effects are critical for social networks / digital products to work. This is because every connection compounds the value of the product.
Facebook achieved its network effect by starting at elite universities and teasing false scarcity in the roll out of their product. It was cool to be on Facebook and not everyone had the opportunity. When a new user base had the opportunity to participate they opted in, and many became instantaneous heavy users.
While the free speech angle of NOSTR is cool, the network effect isn’t happening. I follow 800+ accounts but the same couple dozen individuals are active … and there isn’t a lot of compounding effect in the engagements.
How does this change? Will the NOSTR developers make it long enough to let the network effects occur naturally? Are the financial incentives enough to make this ecosystem function?

The MicroStrategy #bitcoin playbook works for companies with steady, recurring cashflows. SaaS works. Oil and gas E&P works. Logistics works.
Bitcoin mining? Not so much. Cashflows are too volatile to cover the debt obligations.
I’m skeptical of MARA’s recent announcement. Makes me think they’re working to offset some short term liquidity issues. Also, they’ll use the added liquidity (if they can secure it) to ride this next bitcoin bull run and likely enter into a different business (i.e. energy).
But the MicroStrategy playbook works because MicroStrategy can DCA and smash buy without reliance on bitcoin price for their cashflows. This won’t end well for MARA without some major adjustments to their business model.
