Orcas use kelp like a loofa – Darcy Hitchcock
Kelp is supposed to be good for your skin. Apparently the resident orcas in the Pacific Northwest know this too. They tear off sections of bull kelp, wrap it around themselves and then rub against one another, using it like a loofa. Similar to primate grooming, it appears to have a hygienic and social component. The behavior was seen most often with whales that had a lot of dead skin cells.
