A service like bandwagon.fm could be a co-op, owned by the artists whose music it hosts. It could be a social enterprise, whose constitution prioritises the needs of those artists over the financial interests of owners.
But however its governance is structured, one of the best ways to keep services accountable is the freedom to leave. So social publishing services need to enable publishers to use their own domain names for account and post URLs, and provide full account export.

We all know about the ways tech founders have sold their souls for funding to keep their platforms online; ads, Venture Capital, acquisition by corporations, or becoming one (IPO). Obviously we need ethical alternatives for social web services.
But not just alternative funding models. We also need alternative governance models, which keep the operators of services accountable to the people using them.

Take music publishing as an example. If artists commit to making bandwagon.fm the primary online home for their music, they need to be sure that it will continue to exist, and they will get plenty of notice before it's shut down. Which means the people running it need to have a plan for how they will cover the costs of storing and serving a growing collection of music files, long term.

Some of the considerations for social publishing services, that aren't so much of an issue for social communication services;
* persistence and responsible sunsetting
* storage and bandwidth costs
* accountable governance
* Bring Your Own Domain
To be clear, I'm not saying these things aren't helpful in communication services, they certainly are. They're just not as mission critical as they are in publishing services.

Sure, now that Loops exists, it's probably the better choice for posting ephemeral microvideos, as part of a social conversation, like we do with text micro-posts. But Loops isn't constrained to this kind of social communication usage. It supports videos up to 3mins long, and people could just as easily use it to publish videos they might otherwise put on a YouTub channel. In the hopes they'll still be watched and valued many years hence.

Now having given these software projects as examples, I want to make it clear I'm describing use patterns, either of which can be applied to any software.
After decades of blogging, I can't help thinking of what I do on Mastodon as publishing. I link to my old posts and dig through them to find stuff, just like I do on my blogs. Conversely someone could use PeerTube to do video blogging, auto-deleting their old posts after a while like people do with their micro-posting accounts.

Similar criticisms were made of EVs in the early years of their revival, with claims you'd need a battery the size of a car to get the same range as a tank of petrol. That may even have been true at the time, but both battery tech and engine efficiency have been improved *a lot*.
Surely hydrogen-to-flight efficiency can be improved with research into engines designed specifically for hydrogen-powered aviation? But the research won't get done without work also being done on supply.

With almost no transmission losses, as you'd get if that that solar energy was sent through long distance lines to the grid. As well as no energy cost for trucking fuel to the airport.
But nobody seems to be thinking as radically as this. Institutional thinking is so stuck in the industrial habits of the fossil fuel era.

The combination of being inclined towards matchmaking, and having a good experience on the platform when looking for dates, might motivate people to stick around and join the long term stewardship team. Matchmakers have an ongoing interest in dating, whether they're single or not themselves. But their intrinsic motivations are totally different to those of people running a service to make a profit, or even just a living. Matchmakers have no interest in trapping people on dating sites - to be monetised somehow as they endlessly hopescroll - they want to get them matched and off the site (at least for the night, ideally longer).

These people have existed in human communities probably as long as we've had culture, we call them matchmakers.

A producer co-op doesn't make sense in the context of a dating service. The product is dates, and the producer of those is the daters, or the service itself, or an amalgam of both. A multi-stakeholder model was tried for meet.coop, but proved too complicated for bootstrapping a new online service.
At this point we've pretty much ruled out all the standard co-op ownership models.

A worker-owned co-op *might* work. But what keeps the interests of workers aligned with those of daters?
This problem is demonstrated in the Loomio.com platform. Where despite its founding ideals and co-op structure, any change that benefits *either* worker-owners, *or* communities using the platform to make decisions, but not both, ends up weighted towards the former. A bias rationalised away on the basis that it can't serve communities if it goes out of business.

I was also thinking about who ought to own dating services? In response to first round of geekout posts about this, @npub1ekj…wjxt (IIRR) suggested a role for matchmakers. It occurred to me that people keen to play this role (and good at it) could be the best owner-operators of dating services run as platform co-ops.

Trying to build a coherent and easily discoverable and navigable dating network like this using existing federated group/ community/ forum software just seems like a non-starter to me. I think we'd better to set up dedicated dating portals - local and specialised - and federate them into a larger search space.
One advantage of this approach is that existing dating services, like Alovoa, may be willing to add their accounts to the overall network effect.

You also end up with people looking for casual meetups and short term fun, in the same pool as those looking for long term relationships, and maybe marriage and kids.
So what you'd really need is 2 sets of communities - one seeking casual, one commitment - and each set divided into communities that cover a geographical area within which people could realistically meet. With the ability to widen searches to neighbouring areas, for the more mobile/ adventurous.

Problem being that anyone who's just joined (if theirs is the first account on their service to join) wouldn't have access to all the past messages. Unless the group had some kind of archive they could search.
A Lemmy/ MBin/ PieFed community could work better. Main problem there being the fragmentation problem, people setting up loads of different dating communities on different services, creating decision paralysis about which to join.

In that everyone looking for dates could send a post indicating that to @dating@DatingGroup.foo, existing members would get it in their feed, and anyone on a service with at least one member of the group could find those posts in searches.

Exactly wrong. You're getting 'money' confused with *currency*. Which is indeed not created by exchange, it's issued by fiat of states, currently by trading banks on their behalf. Which does indeed make it different from barter (which emerges after money systems collapse, see Debt), and mutual credit, in which money *can* be created during exchange

What existing dating apps do is make a Trained #MOLE the matchmaker, and as with most things, MOLEs aren't really very good at this (not their fault, they're just digital moles). A service that puts humans in this role instead is an intriguing idea.

Probably would, since AP doesn't support robust privacy features. Although maybe if and when the E2EE stuff based on MLS is ready to use? In the meantime, it would be an interesting experiment to use Matrix or XMPP+OMEMO(+some other XEPs?) to federated dating services.

It would be great to get some of the Bumble founders involved in developing a federated replacement for the rapidly enshittifying Tinder, Bumble, etc. I can imagine them bringing some great insights to both a UX and Trust & Safety aspects. I wonder how I'd go about making contact with them?
OTOH any woman reading this could too if they've had horrific experiences with online dating designed by men, or been frustrated with the enshittification of existing dating apps.

That makes sense, since apparently Bumble was started by some women who'd got frustrated with Tinder. I'm guessing they took VC, because that's been the standard way of starting a new online service for a couple of decades, and now they've lost control of the company. Because the enshittification that's underway must be just as frustrating for them as it is for anyone else.

Having said that, I'm going to miss Bumble (unless they publish full source code for their mobile app and get it into F-Droid, which seems unlikely). Everything about the way it works is better than Tinder (the only 2 I've tried so far), from letting women send the first message to matches, to the way they lay out profiles.

I tried to login to Bumble at the time, but oh that's right, on mobile they force us to use their proprietary app. So I shelved that, and today I logged in using the web app ... which they tell me they're discontinuing soon. So the only way to use Bumble will be with the mobile app. FFS.
It really is time to build a federated dating network ...

A week ago I said I was back on Tinder. So far, as usual, it's been a grim and completely unproductive waste of life.

It's more the other way around. The freedom to trade, and to make voluntary agreements about how to carry out transactions - whether via Gift Economy, bazaar money (see Life Inc.), credit vouchers, time banking etc - fall out of the more important freedoms, like that of association.

Are Farmer's Markets (also inspired by the medieval bazaar) and co-op supermarkets an improvement on corporate supermarkets and their highly centralised, too-big-to-fail supply chains? I think so. Keep in mind that union-driven projects like this were used to build worker self-management in the lead up to the Spanish revolution.
Could there be a place for them in a society run mostly on anarchist principles? On what basis could we suppress them without becoming Stalinists or Red Guards?

Is a bazaar or a co-op supermarket the ideal model for food exchange in a community too large to do it by trading veges over the back fence? The question makes no sense to me. There are no 'ideal' models, only what makes the most sense as a response to a given situation.

Within that, a bazaar was a commons, run by and for the community that bought and sold in it. Like any sustainable commons, this required regulation, eg to avoid having stallholders selling poisonous food or faulty goods, or people stealing from stallholders, or anything else that would threaten the market's reputation.
The modern equivalent would be a supermarket run as a multi-stakeholder co-op, where workers, producers and customers all have a stake in ownership and decision-making.

Were medieval bazaars free from central government interference (ie the King and the Crown)? Yes, as most governance functions in the Middle Ages were more localised. Nation-state scale government didn't become practical until the emergence of tech like national train networks and reliable postal system, which were originally inseparable from them.
Were bazaars unregulated? certainly not. For a start they existed by the grace of the local landlord and church authorities.

This turns on how we're defining "business". Does a subsistence farmer selling surplus veges in a bazaar-inspired medieval market, or a baker selling bread there, count as "business"? In the broadest sense, sure, but not in the sense that I think concerns you here.
For this explanation, I'll use 'bazaar' instead of 'market' to avoid confusion with other uses of 'market'.

Buy one argument against what you say here is that it's ahistorical. In his book Life Inc. Douglas Rushkoff pointed out that the importation of the tradition of the bazaar into Europe had a profoundly liberating effect.

When people claim that property is an inalienable right - likes freedoms of expression or association - then "property is theft", as Proudhon famously put it. But as long as they accept that property is a social agreement, subject to negotiation and consensus, then "property is freedom" (a lesser known quote from Proudhon).
Having said all that, being open to there being a place for markets in a free society does *not* make an anarchist right-leaning. It just makes them not a Stalinist.

So one thing I want to clarify is that although I see "anarcho-capitalism" as just fascism with better branding (Peter Thiel being an archetypal example of where it leads), I do accept that a person can be right-leaning economically, and still be an anarchist.
But there are limits, beyond which this becomes a contradiction in ways that are universalizing, and inflexible (again think of the neoreactionaries defending the freedom to deny others freedom).

A couple of days ago I posted about what being an anarchist means to me. Obviously given the way I defined it, I can't determine what it means for anyone else. A contradiction, yes. But one that holds space for flexible ways of understanding that can better respond to our constantly shifting situations.
One thing my freedoms-based definition didn't address though, was how I apply it to political economy. For example, do I believe that all legitimate anarchist politics is anticapitalist?

An anarchist does not drive on the opposite side of the road just because what side to drive on has a rule. But they might treat a red light as a stop sign when there's little or no traffic.
Like models, rules are never universally right, but some are useful. Good rules are guidelines, that help keep us safe. Not policies to be policed, regardless of the likely outcome.
Following rules because they're rules is recorded in history as "just following orders". We know where that leads.

I like Bumble's model better than Tinder's. It makes way more sense for hetro dating to normalise the woman choosing from her matches and sending the first message, rather than drowning in a flood of naff texts and dic pics from potential suitors. Also men don't have our confidence eroded by a flood of implicit rejections, so it's better for us too. *Especially* those of us with Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria.

That aside, in some of the photos the 1000 yard stare of a mistreated human being stands out like a dog in a cattery. I can just about see the reflection of the people who hurt them in their eyes. It's heartbreaking.

Oh and in case it needs to be spelled out, as I said to the identi-moonies who dogpiled me as mentioned in the OP, I agree that nobody is obliged to educate bigots. If it's not safe for you to do that, or you simply choose not to spend your time that way, I respect that.
All I'm asking is that we stop publicly shaming people who maintain *pre-existing* relationships with people who've contracted bigot brainworms, and try to guide them back to sanity.

I don't find DDG nearly as good for web search as I used to. But one cool thing it enables is conveniently searching other services, using "bangs";

I'm wondering what this is based on, because I agree with @npub1p02…ecmj here, my understanding has always been that a blockchain is a special case of an append-only log, that includes a global consensus mechanism. So calling any use of an append-only log a "blockchain" is like calling any use of the net a "website", even if it doesn't use HTTP.

Lee was being polite, but let's call a spade a spade; what she's describing in her pieces on this topic is a cult. A 21st century networked cult, not mindslaves in a compound, but a cult all the same.
