I can also do it manually, because with HDR that's at least standardized, so I don't even need to fiddle with ddc.
Just wished there is something that could reduce the brightness automatically depending on time or something if no light sensor is available.
But it's also a laptop so a sensor should be somewhere, it's probably just not wired up.

it's great for driver development though... I have my eGPU set up in a way, that I can unload the GPU driver any moment and power cycle the case without rebooting!
So that's kinda working, but yeah.. do not unplug the cable 🙃

The horrors of fixing the mess...
though at least through runtime power management it _might_ be doable already, just requires Userspace to do a thingy 🙃 and most people plug their displays on the discrete GPU anyway (or don't even have an iGPU in the first place)...
_but_ we also already have eGPUs and that's already a huge dumpster fire.

yeah, doing that in Userspace does sound like a good approach here if we'd need to rely on databases. If it's a standardized interface doing it in the kernel might be good enough + adding quirks for hardware where it doesn't.
But I'm now more surprised that this hasn't happened yet and I'm wondering why.

okay interesting, that one indeed seems to work on the display I've used previously.
So now I'm wondering why it's not really set up for Linux desktops to use, or why there isn't a sysfs backlight device entry for this?
Or is the problem that you need a database of supported displays and it's all custom per device?

Well, laptop displays generally do have interfaces (ACPI/WMI/GPU/custom, it's a disaster) for the brightness, just external displays didn't really. But you should be able to tell if the image just gets darker or if there is less light.
I think OLED displays also have a standard interface for brightness? Not quite sure.

oh shit right.. there was like this emo phase I had, like meet up with other emos and like made it like a weekly thing, meet up point in front of a mcdonalds, because that isn't on brand.

Every accusation of them is a self-revelation. Period. Every. Single. One.
Also they weaponize political ideals to harm them. Things like "neutrality", or "everybody is welcomed" or "tolerance" you name it. They use those terms to undermine the ideals behind them and sow disagreement on purpose.

I just hope they learn that wasting political capital like this isn't worth it. But also "just following orders" wasn't and never will be a valid excuse.
Like they had to decide that enforcing a rule, which they don't have to begin with, in this particular case is worth it.

I was wondering for a while how I can put the "objective arguments are a lie" in nice words, but I think I kinda figured it out.
What persuades people to accept your technical position aren't your "objective" arguments, it's the trust relationship between you.
If you don't trust each other, you won't trust your arguments anyway, no matter how good or right they are.
And now go wonder why arguments in FOSS spaces are always a disaster if there is a strong hostility between the groups.

Soo uhm... the recent esp32 bluetooth "backdoor" stuff kinda smells like a nothinbgurger and people jumping on it because of Sinophobia...
maybe I'm wrong, but uhm.. it feels like it's just a lot of noise about something nobody will talk about in a week after some clarification were published explaining why it's not an issue at all.
So they issue commands the way drivers do and it looks like debugging features?

I'm formally stepping down as a nouveau kernel maintainer.
I want to stress out this is only for the kernel side of things and has and will not have any impact on my involvement in mesa.
Don't really want to add too much here, just that things need to change. Recent events (tm) is just another example of the deep disagreement.
I won't be able to convince people I made up my mind on my own here, so I won't bother with it anyway.

Soo.. I think I've implemented SVM in rusticl properly and the supported drivers are iris (Intel), radeonsi (AMD) and llvmpipe (CPU).
This also means you can have a context with Intel and AMD GPUs in them and SVM works properly across them all.
Which also means this is the first OpenCL implementation supporting SVM across vendors? Are there any others?
Just need to clean up that mess and merge it tho.

we slowly reach the point where "AI advocates" need to be added to list of what constitutes being a "climate change denier".
AI leads to big data centers being build, which leads to massively higher power consumption, which means we get off carbon slower.
And the "counter argument" is that the benefits of AI will offset any damage done by climate change, which is simply 1. wishful thinking and 2. untrue.

The removal of Russian linux maintainers working for sanctioned companies is a prime example of how one creates collective trauma by not being careful on how to convey the message proper.
The messaging were terrible, yes, a lot of people understood immediately why it happened, no, you can't look at it rationally and say "people will know". Your own collective trauma stood in the way.
Some people lost trust, others feel deeply betrayed, not due to the step itself, but by the way it was done.

I was following the debate just briefly, but one argument brought up against rust did strike me a bit:
"rust is just like java being a hip language nobody cares about in the future" (I've seen various variants of that one)
Which... is kinda weird, because that tells me those things:
1. you don't know what happens outside your bubble
2. you never bothered learning java
3. you never bothered learning rust
And besides, Java is probably more used in engineering than C.

oh sure, I was just curious, because I haven't considered that to be a problem at all.
But yeah.. the recovery path being accessible on macos sounds like an important feature, even if that's just a side effect.
However there are people working on using a slim Linux boot environment instead of grub, so that could also solve this issue, but I've heard that the kexec way of doing things doesn't work on apple silicon devices.

As people seem to discuss Code of Conduct stuff again, please keep in mind that decisions are normally not purely made based on specific "wrong doings" or "having the wrong opinion".
What matters as well is how one behaves if confronted about things and if a constructive and reasonable discussion is possible with the person in question.
Reasonable people are entirely fine with having those discussions and we can together find a path forward and figure something out working for everybody.
