The DE healthcare system breaks even every year. The system uses computers & billing. The bills are paid behind the scenes by the institution that has agreed or is obliged by law to pay for it. The institutions get their money from contributions. The contributions come from employers & employees. It works. When a health system breaks even it acts as a long-term functioning insurance system. That is not politics. It is boring, rational governance. Not suited to the UK? Might agree.

Ich habe mehrere jetKVM gekauft weil ich sowieso von Fern die Rechner verwenden will, und dadurch verwende ich auch mehrere Rechner nicht nur mit der selben Tastatur und Maus sondern alle auf einem Bildshirm (imac retina 24 Zoll unter nixos... herlich). Also die Kosten waren irre natuerlich aber der Nutzen.... wunderbar.

Wouldn't it be revolutionary if on your smartphone when someone calls and you are already in a call, they would get a response like "sorry, engaged" or similar. My apps are no totally uncoordinated on Android, and cannot cope with more than one call at the same time nor do they give me any tools to deal with it.

I am trying out ZFS on my "homelab" server but was most surprised that it seems one has to do all the ZFS setup external to the flake which only lives within the manually made ZFS pool environment. That seems to mean I need a sort of orchestration script like tool to match flake /persist data settings to the ZFS setup hoo-ha. Works fine but is not declarative at all really. Any ideas there ?

Can we set up a mesh network to make available to all the data concerning FOSS software popularity akin to the process in reticulum where announces propagate and the data paths are completely anonymous? With the fragmentation of the FOSS due to everyone running their own stuff without repo pull requests etc. being made, it would help if the raw data on the use of various software modules were made available mesh-wise to be able to spot high use of popular code even if it is not in a repo.

Yes. Fully understand. I am experimenting with work-arounds with services.desktopManager.gnome.flashback.enableMetacity = true
under nixos... will see where that takes me. I would have expected some sort of retro limited gnome option to run by default if the user specified x11 (for a good reason related to hardware).

Wow. That is an automation of what I am starting to do manually. Very very nice. I am learning the git ropes so am happily doing pushes and pulls and flake checks manually. I keep each machine on its own branch and merge to main when judged safe and pull back main etc. etc. Very kind to share. This is amazing tech.

I am trying to update my #nixos flake and discover that #x11 is not supported by the latest #gnome but I also know that some of my hardware (#HPelitedesk800 , VM machines running xrdp and x11spice) fails to show correct windows under #wayland so this is very un-linuxy and I feel like a sort of macos hardware obsolescence vibe ... Or is gnome now just "bloatware" and #Xfce the new way forward here for the good old tech?

I think that what is missing in the decentralised cooperating systems you refer to is everyone being on the same best page. Every participant must know which version of the shared project is being used and how much. Real detail. Hours of up time per repo commit. This information allows the swarm work to converge on the best and not splinter into isolated branches. The code needs to report on itself to all. (This can be done without spyware using anonymous meshing akin to reticulum.)

Hat off to you. In some societies there is a compulsory component of health insurance that insurers for long term care costs and therefore there is indeed a huge care economy. E.g..my son at 18 starts paying compulsory care insurance all his life. Insurance was invented in the UK to rescue families from destitution and all governments seem to prefer complex state admin procedures to funded rights. The UK needs its government to do its homework.

I am going with zfs and sending snapshots from the main (mirrored) SSD to a raidZ2 array of HDDs and copy to a set of disks in a further set of disks in https://amzn.eu/d/0h2aDga2 as ext4 SATA as grab and run and 6 month, 4 month, 2 month, 1 month and 2 week air gaped ZFS backups.

If you find a an Andrioid smartphone (e.g. a lost one or a person who needs help and cannot speak) and the user has saved their emergency contact info in the phone, you can just press on "emergency" on the lock screen and find the stored emergency number immediately.

The way the post was written mixes two things. First the protection of nature and what the scientific & legal principles are that make a certain behaviour questionable. If the code of the app is not able to be inspected, how can one use it happily? I never use third party tools from outside the #nixOS package repo unless I can inspect the code....so I am perplexed 🤔. Am I the only one that thinks like this? Have I missed something?

True. It is impossible to manage. It is a sort of vestigial rule that is not enforceable. Let's face it: the quantity of code vastly exceeds any patent scope in existence & so the idea that coders managing repos in their spare time will roll out lawyers at their cost to sue someone running a binary that may or may not itself be in black box terms your code but underneath God knows what MIT-licence type LLM output is hard to see. Alas gnu licence is now mega hard to enforce.

Great explanation. A patent is more appropriate than copyright (which as the link says does not work when LLM has done the job) because then re-coding in other forms is not going to change the infringement. If the code's technical purpose is patented then the owners of the patent can prevent those who seek to use it in a non-permissive manner from bringing it to market and let those who follow the copyleft philosophy use it for free. Of course patenting each step is too expensive.

Yes but updates do sneak in .....I think. This can be.monitored via alerts from Github. Strangely I had more problems when the #reticulum stack was being updated because making things backward compatible and compatible with all #meshchat versions was not really achieved if even possible... so now, with the "maintenance mode", so long as you can indeed flash your radios (plural, use two to at least be able to talk to yourself 😂) everyone will be on the same "page".

I am faced daily with software from French sources and the usability is monstrous. Hideous. The comparison is so stark that it is a cultural difference. But this is a country that builds its own nuclear weapons and subs. Die Kosten des ÖPNV in München sind eine absolute Unverschämtheit. 4,20 € für eine einfache Fahrt von mehr als vier Haltestellen – das ist teilweise sogar teurer pro Kilometer als Fliegen. Die Argumentation, dass das in Ordnung sei, weil man die Kosten mit dem Deutschlandticket senken kann, ist ein klarer Fehlschluss. Es sollte im Grundgesetz festgelegt sein, dass nichts Öffentliches unter dem Selbstkostenpreis verkauft werden darf. Diejenigen, die Subventionen wirklich brauchen, sollten diese stattdessen gezielt erhalten.

Fair enough. (I am prohibited from publicly criticising my employer, and it is not one that has anything to do with computing.) Claude code works. How do I know? Well I tested it. It is even more remarkable when seeing that under the hood there is that. The competition in IT startups etc. is brutal & I am sorry for the pressure. All I know is at the receiving end it feels like it is Christmas every day because the tool does stuff that helps novices do stuff. For experts it is hellish.

A good bank is probably one of the most important services in life. Sometimes we just need help. The level of service from them is so utterly abominably terrible and un-human that it is an absolutely perfect paradigm of enshitification and frustration second only to the service provided by the state on-line. If you know of a bank in DE that (in exchange for payment) is actually helpful or useful, please let me know.

#HanseaticBank sent me late a myriad of complex menacing bills that cross in the post with various levels of detail... no chance to know what is going on. Wait on their phone
--- they have one ! +4940600096464 --- which asks you to press 1 to get to right dept but it does not work: the number does not get received. Their musac has random voice messages " warte antwort" in the middle and I get through and they tell me actually you are ok. All good & their humans cannot forward you to complaints.

#HanseaticBank #creditcard A total & utter farce. They tell me to make a purchase to keep the credit card alive. I make the purchase. They cancel my card. I think the card worked when cancelled. I ask for the card to keep going. They say reapply. I reapply. Did the whole thing. They then refuse to keep the card going. Their app never worked. They cannot be contacted. There is an online form which never understands the issue. The worst bank against stiff competition for that title. Finger weg!

I think the value of open source or leaked code is that one can get a feel for the way the authors are working. Some repo code is so clean and well commented and so on that one can feel the care and craft. Others, that one might look at if there is a problem with the tool, are written in a way that makes one worry if this is moving with all due care and attention. However the commercial pressure to be great is something that we cannot feel and I still think claude code is remarkable.
