I’ve kind of realised that a good narrative-driven game (like Skyrim or RDR) replaces TV for me. There’s something about story that’s still important, but the interactivity adds to it (and TV can’t offer that).

What also doesn’t help: Europeans (or citizens of other countries) comparing their electoral systems to the US’s. Anyone with half a brain cell can see the US system is *obviously* different and *obviously* undemocratic bullshit. As you so rightly kept reiterating to this person, what matters is how we go about improving it.

Nah. The primary failing here was on the part of the WaPo editorial board for not telling Bezos to jump, and publishing *their* (not his) endorsement anyway. *That’s* why I canceled my WaPo subscription (independent of any action I might *also* take against Bezos’ other businesses).

Just as the US system was state of the art in 1789, the Australian system is state of the art for 1900. Imagine what kinds of systems would be state of the art, given what we know today?

Was about to reply and say this. And not to digress (but I can’t help it as I love nerding out about this stuff), it’s one of the reasons why imho the parliamentary system is superior to the (garbage) US system - it actively encourages multiple parties, including established ones collapsing and new ones forming when citizens don’t feel like they’re being represented by the status quo. It may seem chaotic to those used to the (detrimentally) static US system, but this inherent “chaos” works to the benefit of the public, which I assume we all agree should be a priority for a system of governance.
Of course I’m under no delusions that the US would ever adopt a parliamentary system, sadly. NIH syndrome is too strong in this country.
