Truth is I felt fairly free here during the whole of 2020 and beyond.
Remember the insane nanny state we saw in countries like Australia and Canada? It didn’t exist in Thailand.
There was simply caution and mutual respect, not a wild persecution of normal people by those on power trips.
While borders were closed, internally the country was open for business. I was able to travel throughout Thailand and enjoy my life.

Today’s myth about Thailand (#12) is that the food here is unhealthy.
Truth is, the average meal here is going to be a lot healthier than what you’ll find in the West — especially the USA.

My personal experience going back to the USA after 2 years in Thailand: I gained 25 pounds in 6 months.
American food - from cheap to luxury - gives a dopamine rush like no other. You always crave that next bite.
Thai food is different. Even after a small bowl of noodles, I often feel satiated. My brain says I’m done, before my stomach is in pain.
You’ll find seed oils and a lot of carbs in Thai food. But consider that:
- The land here isn’t decimated from 50 years of factory farming
- Most produce is 1-2 hands from the grower
- Most dishes are freshly cooked, without many/any processed ingredients
Perhaps paranoia about a little seed oil is killing you far more than the seed oil itself.
I feel MUCH healthier here than anywhere else I’ve lived, and I eat out all the time, without much concern for quality.

You might be surprised to hear that it can go below freezing in Thailand in the mountains during winter!
- Smoky season (March-April): dry land with field burns + forest fires makes for bad air quality. Also very hot. Bad air peaks for ~2 weeks with haze throughout. Plan your Chiang Mai trip accordingly!
- Rainy season (May-September): 70-85°F / 20-30°C with occasional rains and high humidity. Often very pleasant.
- Cool Season / Winter (October-February): 50-75°F / 10-25°C, beautiful scenery, tourist high season in the North of Thailand.
Growing up in Chicago, I treat smoky season like winter: stay indoors with air filter & AC or escape to Bangkok/southern beaches.

Just like I said in myth #4 about safety, you’re more likely to see the sex industry on display in a major American city than anywhere in Thailand.
There are a few streets in the entire country which are known for this, and unfortunately they’ve become all some people obsess about - which says more about them than this country.
Given the safety, great food, lush nature and friendly people Thailand is very family-friendly and wholesome.
Here in Chiang Mai you have a large variety of international schools, family-friendly parks and outdoor activities like hiking and dirt biking.
Don’t let some secondhand information throw you off from the beauty of this land and its people.

Looking through old pictures. This is a photo from a festival I went to in late 2021 hosted with a hill tribe in Northern Thailand.

Thankfully this isn’t true ❌, with one caveat.
Bangkok’s airports connect to over 120 cities across the globe with direct flights, including major hubs like Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Taipei.
The city of Chiang Mai, with an airport that’s about 15 minutes from everything, connects directly to most Asian hubs allowing for one hop to Europe or the Americas.

Today's myth about Thailand 🇹🇭 (#5) is that the infrastructure sucks. The truth is it’s just as good if not better than what I was used to in the USA.
Take a few examples:
- Hospitals: private system is very efficient and cheap with great care.
- Education: plenty of private intl schools with tuition around $4,000 a year (lot of variance here).
- Transportation: Bangkok is connected to 100+ intl destinations, and Thailand has (checks wikipedia) 39(!) airports around the country. Round trip Chiang Mai to Bangkok is ~$60. Bangkok has 2 local train networks: BTS and MRT. And the road network across Thailand is vast - everywhere is reachable by car.
- Shopping and Shipping: 1 day around Thailand, Shopee and Lazada are the Amazons of Thailand.
- Internet: I pay $15/month for 100mb up/down on my phone, and $12/mo at home for 300mb up/down.

This is probably the most laughable myth I've heard about Thailand.
I understand why it exists: I grew up in the USA 🇺🇸 and the brainwashing that "everywhere else is poor and therefore dangerous" is strong... but you are more likely to die in your local grocery store in America than literally anywhere in Thailand.
Thailand is by far the safest place I've ever lived in my life. There is virtually no violent or petty crime here.
Imagine if the entire world was your living room - that's what it feels like to go anywhere in this country.

There are Bitcoiners everywhere, they're just low key about it!
The Bitcoin scene among Thais is large and growing fast. The Bitcoin Standard is now the #2 book at Naiin, a major bookstore in Thailand.
There's a 4,000 person Discord server in Thai language dedicated to all things #Bitcoin , and the educational company @Right Shift has 30k YouTube followers and runs a global Bitcoin conference in Bangkok: v2 coming in September 2024.

Busting myths about Thailand #2:
Thais don’t speak English.
This is totally false. It’s easy to get by here with just English (even basic English!)
Thais learn English in school, and they are generally courteous, kind and accommodating.
Most everyone you encounter in a restaurant, cafe or hotel will be able to communicate with you.
That said, if you’re planning to live here or spend significant time here, you should invest time in learning the language. It will open many doors for you and make more complex interactions with govt, repair shops etc a lot smoother.
Learn the written language first - it takes a few weeks of 15 min a day to get the character set memorized - and you will have a strong foundation for pronunciation and vocabulary.
I used a course called Learn Thai From a White Guy to get the written language and sounds nailed. The rest I learned through daily life and some private tutoring.

After 5 years living here let me clear them up.
Here’s myth #1: Thailand is just for backpackers.
Maybe this was true 20 years ago, but it couldn’t be further from the truth today.
Yes, Thailand has a low cost of living. But it also has incredibly high quality and high value services.
For instance, I can get a Thai massage at a local shop for $6/hour. Or I can go to one of the many high end spas in Chiang Mai and get the service, amenities and surroundings of a 5-star hotel for $30/hour.
I can eat a local meal for $2, or a Michelin-star fine dining meal for $100.
Beers in a local bar for $2 a pop, glitzy rooftop cocktails for $10.
These are all accessible within Thailand, matched with service that’s way above and beyond for the price you’re paying.
You can definitely live a cheap life here; but you can also live one of great luxury, for good value.

The mainstream world is boiling us like frogs; slowly but surely.
We are being divided, pillaged, and made dependent on a corporate-governmental system for our very survival on all fronts: economic, social, mental, and spiritual.
So what are we left with? A society that is tearing itself apart; there is no respect for one another, let alone self-esteem or the will to grow and create better days.
We are increasingly affected by confusion, fear, depression, anxiety, self-limitations, analysis paralysis and addictions of many forms.
The only perspective we all seem to share these days is that we cannot go on like this. Something must change.
Weathering whatever change may come will require a new mindset, new skills, and new relationships which few of us today are accustomed to developing or practicing.
We must develop sovereignty within ourselves, our families and our communities. Holding Bitcoin will not be enough.
We must develop the mindset, skills and relationships necessary to resist dependence on the system not only for goods and services, but more importantly for our sense of self, our adaptability, our feeling of security.
Without this belief in your own abilities - and the experience to back it up - you will bend the knee along with every other unprepared soul.
Developing sovereignty isn’t achievable from your couch. It isn't taught (well) on YouTube. It requires you to go out of your norm, to get uncomfortable, to experience a wider range of emotions in life. Sovereignty is its own form of Proof of Work.
And cultivating your sovereignty is the only way to weather the changes already in progress in our economy and society.

That which you give attention to grows - learning and observing this in everyday life has been very helpful for me.
Purpose has been the most helpful. Having a direction and not giving up, working with others to help get through blockers, and offering value to others.
I'm rereading the book Think and Grow Rich. I read it once in 2020 when I had a 9-5 job and it struck me as fairly obvious. Now I am picking up on deeper meanings and threads between the lines.
Ultimately I don't think any of this that you're talking about - a sovereign mind / body - can be told to anyone; it has to be understood through personal experience.

A self-custodied stack of bitcoin does NOT make you free.
It's barely a start.
So what is freedom?
First, a few questions:
When you see a headline about the a 3 letter agency doing something horrible according to 'sources' - do you click?
When someone tweets a mean thing at you - does your heart rate rise?
Do you need anything to feel empowered and ready to take on the day?
If you answered yes to any of these, you are not free.
And when those with far more power than you decide to take your freedoms, you will beg, bow, and bend the knee to get stability and comfort back.
That stack will disappear in an instant, traded away for peace of mind.
Self-custodied bitcoin is a useful tool, but it's also employed as a crutch by many #Bitcoin-ers to avoid the much harder work of building freedom in your mind.
Freedom from worry, fear, anxiety, stress, anger - this freedom cannot be bought. It must be earned.
Earned through extreme discomfort, through frank conversations, through taking leaps, through quiet reflection.
Only alongside freedom of mind can the freedom gained through a stack of sats truly be utilized.
This goes much deeper than ignoring the MSM and not trusting anything. That can be just as much coping as only trusting the MSM narrative.
Freedom of mind entails finding out who you really are, and how to work with your emotions and desires every day.
Everything in life: every problem, every solution, every failure and every success is mental.
Everything you see around you was created by a mind, and started with an idea.
Your own freedom is no different.
So how do can you cultivate freedom of the mind?
Here is what has continued to work for me in the endless battle of cultivating and maintaining freedom of mind.
1. Regular (diverse) challenges
2. Meditation and mindfulness
3. Travel (not tourism)
Challenges show you who you really are by pushing out the crap and testing you. You forget everything else as you push towards one goal.
But challenges need to remain challenging.
This means they need to surprise you, all the time. If a marathon is your "challenge" - after you run 5 of them, it's no longer a challenge. You know what to expect, you're adapted to it mentally. Find something else.
This is why I don't talk about the itinerary before a Ride of Passage. If you know what you're going to do, it's far less stimulating for personal growth.
Meditation and mindfulness is a cheat code. It is not woo-woo fantasy stuff, it cuts right to the heart of how our minds operate.
One way I've found helpful to get in to mindfulness is by practicing focus. Riding a motorcycle gets me there instantly, because the fear of screwing up and breaking a leg forces me to focus on the road ahead, the feeling of the controls, my weight on the pegs.
Yet sitting and meditating is still important. The mindfulness cultivated there allows you to step back and observe your mind, learn its patterns, and develop more deliberate responses to thoughts, emotions, and external triggers.
Travel (not tourism) is the final, most fun way I've found to develop freedom of mind.
Traveling puts you in contact with people, cultures, and societies that operate completely differently from you. What are usually normal, unconscious interactions (ordering food, taking the train, walking down the street) incredibly stimulating and often thought provoking.
Just as meditation offers you a glimpse at how your mind works, travel offers a glimpse at how the environment around you shapes your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
However, most people with a passport full of stamps have never TRAVELED. They are simply tourists, using a vast network of tourist services to largely avoid these often uncomfortable experiences clashing with other cultures. Don't be a tourist - go travel and open yourself up to the world.
This will set you free, as it has for me.

I know many of you are disappointed that the Ride of Passage is on motorcycles.
A van trip would be more inclusive and easier, but that's not the point of a Ride of Passage.
The Ride of Passage is on motorcycles because each ride is designed to push your comfort zone.
Motorcycles are optimized for growth, challenge, and thrill - not comfort.
Taking a van wouldn't create the experience I want to have. We need to rough it - in the right ways.
My first motorcycle ride was the 3 hour mountain road to Pai, where I almost wiped out multiple times.
Was it comfortable? Not at all. Did I grow in a massive way? Undeniably.
Now the Ride of Passage is NOT about putting your life in danger - but it's not a vacation either.
I've designed the Ride of Passage to push your boundaries, within limits.
Many parts will feel like a high end tour, from 5-star hotels to incredible local food and personal connections.
Others may have you going, "why the hell did I sign up for this?"
But I guarantee when it's all said and done, you will be glad you came on the ride.
The defeated challenges, conquered fears, expanded horizons and deeper bonds forged through a Ride of Passage will be worth the time away from home.

I can tell you it's pretty frickin' fun!!
There's an amazing freedom that comes with riding a motorcycle and also a grave responsibility. Seems to me to match nicely to Bitcoin. Mistakes are costly but the reward of taking that responsibility is like no other.

On my Bitcoin Tour across the USA last year, one region stuck out to me in particular.
