The trauma of the block size wars of 2017 is being relived by Bitcoin plebs and core sycophants. Fear, sorrow, and confusion reign, even amongst us Roughnecks, and we’ve seen some shit! But this is the best outcome for Bitcoin. If the miners had followed the plebs, as they did in 2017, and smoothly activated a soft fork, there would still be the narrative hanging over Bitcoin that miners decide protocol rules. This narrative would be used to gaslight Bitcoiners into going along with whatever 5 or 6 mining pools decide in the future. This is an antifragility test that needed to happen. Better that it happens now instead of 15 years from now when the plebs would be less equipped to mount any meaningful resistance. This is a victory for Bitcoin and it sets the precedent for Bitcoin’s survival into the distant future long after our tongues are silenced.
Our garden weeds itself. The shitcoiner/big blocker mining pools. . . gone! The bithereum bros hell bent on turning Bitcoin into another Ethereum clone. . . gone! The NFT idiots and token scammers. . . gone! The suitcoiners who think nodes and self-custody are curse words. . . gone!
What comes next is a proof-of-work change, Bitcoin’s first. There is some hesitation amongst Bitcoiners that a POW change creates an altcoin. We disagree. A POW change is an inevitable part of Bitcoin’s maturity and a necessary tool to keep mining honest and decentralized. Whatever you think of BIP110, you can’t claim mining is decentralized. So how do you do it without creating an altcoin? We have a proposal that sets a positive precedent for POW changes.
The Bitcoin brand must not be surrendered. We can hear your objections already being shouted at the screen, “Bitcoin is captured, we need a clean break from Bitcoin!” or “You’re just gonna replay the bcash drama!”
Both objections are wrong as we will explain. Bitcoin is not a company. It is money. Money cannot rebrand itself every couple of decades. If the Bitcoin name fails or is abandoned, no one will trust its replacement. Money needs to be timeless. Money needs to be trusted to hold your life savings and be passed down to heirs without worry. If the Bitcoin name is held exclusively by bad actors, then fiat will have won. There will never be a Bitcoin standard if Bitcoin is renamed every time there is a POW change.
The next objection is a Block Size War flashback. No one wants to argue over what the real Bitcoin is. Good news, you won’t have to. Here’s our naming convention that can apply in 2026, in 2046, 2066, and whenever the future POW changes happen. The new POW algo gets attached to the coin’s name. We don’t know yet what Bitcoin’s new mining algo will be so we will use the example of a fictional algo SHA357. The coin will be called Bitcoin-SHA357 so there is no confusion with the core chain or Bitcoin-SHA256. This naming convention will be used only around the time of a POW change. Eventually, as the new algo outpaces adoption of the previous algo, the algo suffix gets naturally dropped and people just start referring to it as Bitcoin again. It’s still Bitcoin. It just had an upgrade to its algo, that’s all. This is intuitive as users expect periodic upgrades to software. Bitcoin is not immune from this need for periodic upgrades.
If misbehaving miners are unceremoniously forked off with a new algo, they are less likely to misbehave in the future. Or they’ll misbehave less frequently.
Note that Bitcoin Cash did NOT have a POW change. Some of the same mining pools that are currently mining on the invalid Core chain also mine bcash to this day. They are not Bitcoiners. They are big blockers who have once again forked off to a new chain. They didn’t decide what Bitcoin was in 2017 and aren’t deciding it in 2026 either.
Bitcoin survives this antifragility test.

I have no intention to go back to the VC chain. I'll be liquidating it gradually and more agressively on every pump.
It'll take the time it takes. I'm very excited about this new bitcoin chain.

Rolling good dice is the best option we have. Remember the debian ssh bug? And the random number generator problem in Tails? And now coldcard? For kicks, just ask Kimi K2.6 to list bugs related to RNG that have happened in Tails and in the linux kernel.
A printed bip-39 wordlist. Rolling casino dice, odd number = 1, even number = 0 ; get 256 bits like that. Seems pretty good. Last word calculated on a seedsigner, a jade or an offline live-dvd computer.
There's also the pairing method : rolling twice the same die, discard the result if the two numbers are the same, if the first roll is higher than the second, that's a 1; if the first time is lower than the second time, that's a 0. That seems really good too.

I mostly agree. But there is an agenda to use printed money to buy up the real estate so we can rent from the Parasites and be happy about it.
Also, the money being broken and risky, there is nowhere to park the money (except for bitcoin, pre-v30). So land and real estate become bank accounts.
So it's not only inflation. It seems to me to be : broken money + inflation (related to broken money) + 2030 agenda.

I'd say yes and no. If bitcoin stops being a real store of value, then we have to reconsider things.
The reason for having a transparent blockchain is to avoid inflation bugs which could crop up with a more private, encrypted, blockchain.
However, if one doesn't care about the store of value aspect, then it means that it is mostly just a medium of exchange.
For a simple medium of exchange, the risk of an inflation bug on a private blockchain is much less concerning. Also, a private blockchain might actually make more sense for a medium of exchange.

Your point about the immune system turning on itself is well taken.
In this case, I think Bitcoin is at an inflection point. If BIP110 can't go through, it's time for the two crowds to go their respective ways.
Jon Attack said on a interview that about 80 to 85% of the core devs are vaxxed (covid). And I see that there are many childless, woke people in core and among their supporters. This is making me very uncomfortable. The belief systems under which they operate are completely opposed to mine and to the belief system of many that I respect. I'm no longer comfortable having over 100% of my family's financial future in the hands of those devs.
If BIP110 goes through, I'll be super bullish on bitcoin again.
If we get a chain split, I'll be happy to go on my merry way with the BIP110 crowd, with the plebs. And whatever happens, happens.
At this point, I believe the time for technical debates is over. It's been the same arguments for months. The BIP110 crowd won't convince core and core won't convince the BIP110 crowd.
I still do see the value of each camp putting their ideas forward so that we can all reach as many of our respective people as possible. And anyway I believe in freedom of speech.
On a personal basis : the covid-era craziness has pushed my family to make changes that enabled us to meet many new like-minded people.
We've cut just about every link we had with the people we knew who had different basic values. This is what made room for so many new good friends.
It's much less stressful to simply be amongst your people. It's a good life. I hope we can have that in Bitcoin as well.

When someone tells me that a stranger from Thailand asked him to send Bitcoin in order to receive more in return, I tell him plainly: you're being scammed.
I see nothing wrong with calling out scams and scammers.
However, the threshold for using that word should be high. We can't scream "scam" every time we encounter something we don't like. But scams are real, and the word exists for a reason. It exists to be used.
We are human. We need lots of motivation to even just get moving, and emotions are vital to that. Without them, civilization would collapse, no marriages and no children.
Bitcoin is a critical project, probably the most important project for humanity. It is our only hope of ending central banking and its consequences.
Those currently calling out scams, scammers, and predators are part of Bitcoin's "immune system." They are important and essential.
While I don't usually choose to use those words myself, I won't criticize those who do. In fact, I am grateful they are helping defend Bitcoin.

Well said. So well said. The only struggle that I'm left with is, as the author stated about participation in politics :
"This isn't to mock the efforts of those that are working hard to engage policymakers on these issues, as there are principled individuals fighting difficult battles inside legislatures and regulatory bodies, and **their work often prevents even worse outcomes**; but it's just a reality check on the soundness of a particular strategy."
So my internal struggle is this : what is the right balance of political participation versus all other forms of involvement. How much time to spend on political participation versus time spent on promoting freedom technology adoption?
I struggle with that everytime I see an opportunity to send an email to a politician, send a letter, go to a grassroots meeting, go vote, etc. Is it worth it?

I like reading things like that but then my mind always "circles back" to Palestine. How could one be all "just let go, move on, start over, be happy" when an invading horde of barbarians steals your house, steals your land, starves, kidnaps, maims, tortures and kills members of your family, on a daily basis, for decades?

I know about that and *have* seen it firsthand, many times. It doesn't make KYC useful, safe or moral. KYC is not the answer.
Read their manifesto. Bullbitcoin is arguing *FOR* KYC!!
Submitting to KYC laws is one thing (which I understand from the point of view of an exchange, though fighting that in court too would be useful), but arguing FOR KYC is another thing completely.

"KYC is not evil in and of itself. When we get clients at Bull Bitcoin that send us a bank transfer, we want to make sure that that's not a fraudulent transfer. We want to make sure that our clients are not being defrauded. We have private interests in knowing who we're doing business with."
WRONG! KYC is evil in and of itself.
Do knife vendors have to KYC their customers? Do you think they should have to KYC their customers?
You're selling a product. You're selling bitcoin. People buy bitcoin. It's simple. No need for KYC for you, anymore than there should be a need for KYC when Walmart sells bleach.
The need to avoid fraudulent transfers should be on the banking system, not on you! If you're going to fight this, why concede from the get-go on the need and moral justification for KYC?
Even if you win that legal fight, we still lose; because we still get KYC, and the honeypot is still there. You're going about it all wrong.

But... I'm reading the manifesto you wrote here https://dac8.com/en/manifesto/ and I remember being told that your onboarding workflow sends customers to a third party for the KYC verification. So how do you square your own onboarding workflow with the following quote from your manifesto :

And to your point : one of the scariest developments in terms of freedom is the newly required ETAs and now biometrics in Europe, Japan, Thailand, etc. I can't see how to avoid it all except : being smuggled in, or simply refusing to travel. I can't see how even bitcoin fixes that. I guess the only way is to boycott countries doing that and buy-cott the ones not doing it.

Then you definitely know more about China than I do. The Chinese people I know all live abroad, so they're a small group who probably weren't as affected by the propaganda (proof being that they chose to leave), and their friends/contacts back home are likely the same.
That's a scary thought. If 95% of people fall for the propaganda and only 5% escape it, that's a really dangerous situation.
On the CPU/compute point: yes, overall it would be more, but *locally* (in a totalitarian State) it could be less if the heavy lifting is done elsewhere. Right now, more "open" hardware seems weaker and more expensive. To be clearer: if the UK went totally totalitarian and locked down all the good devices, I'd use low-power, open hardware locally and offload the heavy computing to devices in countries that aren't as restrictive.
But what you said about China is really concerning. If it's that bad over there, how do we make sure it doesn't get like that here? Hmmm... "Voting harder" doesn't seem to be working.
Maybe all this craziness will eventually end, just like it did with the Soviet Union? I don't have any contacts in Russia, though, so I don't know what life is really like on the ground right now.
But then I'd like to know more about that 5% in China. Is it a hard and painful existence, or do they manage to live pretty well through all of that? Because if the 5% can be okay, then maybe we have to resign ourselves to the fact that only the people who are awake and taking actual steps will live well. That's not my wish, but it might be the reality.
But if even that 5% are struggling, it really doesn't bode well for us.

Exactly. That's why I'm uneasy with GrapheneOS requiring trusted computing. I feel like by using and promoting it, I'm helping the market for those chips instead of supporting freer alternatives.
My way of squaring that circle is to avoid using smartphones whenever I can. I'm looking for a flip phone for calls, and since I only use my smartphone for photos and music, it should be easy to swap it for something more open. I also refuse to install banking apps or any other "required" software because I don't want that to become the norm. Because of that, I won't use any bank/fintech that forces you to use an app.

With alternatives like RISC-V (much much slower, yes), we at least have a sovereign option available.
Now that AI is advancing, I find myself needing to browse the internet far less often. This reduces my need for CPU power, as some web pages can be quite heavy. When combined with services like routstr.com, it seems like it would be possible to access decentralized stronger computing power even with a relatively weak local device. This means that unless they manage to lock down devices and chips worldwide, we still have a way to preserve our freedom.
But as you say, it does mean less sovereignty. However, looking at how Chinese users find ways to access the open internet through friends acting as relays in other countries, it seems that with a strong personal network, we can still maintain freedom; as long as the world as a whole isn’t completely locked down.
At some point, voting with one's feet will probably also become a necessity, as some countries will slide into tyranny faster than others.
In Western countries, I think we tend to feel like the laws are the actual system, but I think that in the rest of the world, the laws and what actually happens on the ground are very divergent.
This conversation makes me feel that, to stay consistent with my (perhaps misplaced) optimism, I should focus more on open hardware going forward. That’s one of my issues with GrapheneOS — its reliance on a trusted computing device (if my understanding is correct). I don’t really want to encourage that approach. I’ll need to look more closely at our open hardware options at this point.
I like the approach of using the right tool for the right job and perhaps opting for much weaker hardware (but open) if it can handle the specific task I need it to do. Then, I can use other small devices for other small tasks. Also, I’m very interested in the auto-routing features of some AI projects, where they direct queries to the appropriate AI model based on the nature of the query and the necessary computing power.
Preserving our sovereignty will likely mean learning to be economical with our resources.

Jan3 recently made a phone app for speech to text. The app is very easy to use and works really well, even on a fairly old phone: https://github.com/jan3dev/a1echos.
Handy.computer (speech to text) works amazingly well too, even on an old desktop.
ppq.ai also made it easy to use end-to-end encrypted models and pay privately with Lightning, without an account. I have personally put many friends on ppq.ai, even friends who really don’t consider themselves technical.
trymaple.ai is also an interesting option.
I think the LLM memory wiki trend is also very inspiring. Done well, it seems likely to allow the use of less powerful models and still get pretty good results.

In other parts of the world, my feeling is that they'll be pragmatic about it and have an official version and a more discreet version. For example, maybe a fully locked-down phone that "complies," but then have their private phone or other device for other things.
I partly agree that "the devices you actually need, to be functional in the world, are locked down more and more." Yes, more and more services require and will require locked-down devices. But I find that I need those services less and less.
For example, Wise asked me too many questions. It annoyed me. So I dumped them. Bitcoin being more usable in practice than before, I don't miss Wise.
Another example: it's harder than it was to buy physical SIM cards without some form of KYC (perhaps use of a credit card, lighter KYC), but eSIMs are now very easy to buy with btc on lightning.
Yet another example: online banking requires mobile apps more and more, but I need bank accounts less and less (through native Bitcoin payments, prepaid cards that can be bought with Bitcoin, and a personal network of people willing to accept Bitcoin for services and products, etc). I can basically just use bank accounts to get cash out of an ATM.
Facebook and others are more locked down, but now we have Nostr, delta.chat, simplex, and others.
AI frontier models are more locked down, but open-weight models are now good enough to be usable, and even usable on local devices for many uses (speech-to-text, translations, etc).
On the hardware side, RISC-V is making progress.
I understand the gloomy feeling. It's hard not to get that feeling when we see just about every law, every government, everywhere, going in the wrong direction.
However, it feels like, thanks to technology (and people like you!!), our personal freedom space is expanding.

I have mad respect for everything you've done for bitcoin privacy, but this post seems very blackpilled. I personally feel like all of these restrictions on Google and Apple devices are gonna make people want to use open source (and open hardware) even more.
Every time I read about restrictions going up in a part of the war, I also read about how vpn downloads are off the chart, etc.
With all of the craziness, I feel like we've hit peak tyranny in the sense that people are just not gonna go along with it. Maybe NPCs will go along with it, but I think the ranks of the awake are gaining in numbers.
Don't you think so?
For example, look at what happened with the vaccine mandates. They had to drop them, and not because they wanted to. It was just because a small percentage of people, maybe ten, fifteen, twenty percent of people said no.
Open weights AI models are also giving us tools to fight back against tyranny in many ways.
But maybe I'm too optimistic.

We need rock solid digital gold which can be privately teleported worldwide and into the future.
We need something to buy that will hold value and increase in value, to get Freedom Go Up.

You're missing the point.
The point is : now we have an extra hypothesis as to why some of the devs and "influencers" we're pushing for the crazy v30.
It's not about their personal disgusting depravity, it's about the code. Their personal disgusting depravity is relevant to the extent that it's part of the reason behind the push for the crazy code.
Some like to say that Bitcoin is only software. But it's more than that. It's a social phenomenon. The software itself means nothing unless people adopt it and use it. So the social aspects are relevant.
v30 is a socially suicidal change to Bitcoin. The fact that some of those who pushed for those changes are part of a very small minority of depraved maniacs helps explain why they might not even *see* why it's socially suicidal. They're just not normal.
All that means that, going forward, we must be even more cautious about anything they promote.
That's why the Epstein scandal is relevant concerning those devs and influencers.

But since it'll take years to have a good solution implemented, we better start now.
I don't want any quantum solution to be replacing our current elliptic curve, just added to it. That way, any btc sent to a quantum-resistant address would require both signatures to be spent. The btc in old addresses, should never be consfiscated and always usable with the same old signatures.
We would get a choice : pay more fees to use an additional (big) signature or go cheap and cross your fingers.

On (1) : absolutely, and I wouldn't want bitcoin to replace ECC with PQ algos. I would want PQ algos added. So, if I choose to transfer to an address that also uses a PQ algo, I would then need to sign with ECC *and* with that PQ algo. For big amounts, I wouldn't want to risk it being at the mercy of a technological advancement.
On (2) : higher fees : if bitcoin Core wants to consider that, there is a lot of work to do in making it harder for spam data to price out actual monetary transactions. The higher fees argument might have hit harder last year but v30 changed that (on top of what taproot and segwit did). They even changed the definition of bitcoin to make it into a jpg network instead of p2p money.
On (3) : on killing cheap nodes : again, same as with (2), v30 pretty much affirms that Core doesn't care about that. They'll have us relay whatever spam spammers want to spam us with. Pruning is not an interesting option because it kills archival nodes and kills electrum servers.
If we fix the bad incentives to spam the network with non-monetary transactions (thereby limiting the undue competition for blockspace), we can afford to protect the network by giving the option (for those who prefer that) to also have a PQ algo in addition to ECC.
That might actually make blockspace more competitive, while keep bitcoin a p2p money network, and might be good long-term for the network when the mining needs to run only on miner fees.
Many serious people are saying that quantum will be a threat. I'm not technically competent enough to know one way or the other. But giving what's at stake, adding an optional (additional) PQ seems to be the way to go.

I listened starting at 49mns for a couple of minutes and he's just rambling that the lightning guys were lying, and he keeps repeating that. I was waiting for a little bit more meat on those argument bones. He says now he'll just challenge them to fight him physically... That didn't convince me of anything.
In my book, he's insane.
He went to fight ISIS, which to me indicates that he understands very little of what is actually going on in the world.
And in went to Rojova to do that. Rojova = Kurds. Kurds still do excision (female mutilation).
That this guy (Amir Taaki) would still be considered even remotely relevant blows my mind.

I must confess that I'm not really fond of the lightning network. It has failed many times for me. Many "unroutable" payments. And to get the best experience possible, you basically need either a custodian or a very well connected node, which basically means the NSA nodes in Virginia.
I prefer to use Liquid, which is basically a half-custodian. I'm not very happy about it. But it works well, without fail (until it doesn't).

From my understanding :
- the crypto used for extra privacy makes it harder to audit the total supply of coins,
- the coin emission schedule (inflation),
- frequent hard forks, which increases the dependency on the main devs (although that fear for monero feels a little overblown comparatively since bitcoin core v30),
- limited options for second layers, which presents a problem for future scaling in case of massive adoption, and
- the choice of preventing ASICs which limits the total hashing power of the network, making reorgs more likely.
Those are the main concerns that come to mind right now.

As bitcoiners, we can't be bearish on tech.
Why not simply ADD quantum resistance? Not removing the current scheme, just adding quantum resistance as an optional extra for those who are willing to pay the extra fee.
For small amounts, I'm okay with receiving and sending a hot potato.
But when moving sats to my cold storage "pension fund", I'd be more than willing to pay more in fees to cover the extra quantum resistance.
As a bitcoiner, I don't feel like risking my family's financial future on your mathematical assurances of impossibility of the quantum threat.

I think the blocksize war proved that this is not always the case. The other side had the vast majority of the mining and almost all of the VC money.
The UASF crowd was okay with the price going to zero rather than submitting to the dark side.
We see that also with religions. Truly religious people are very willing to sacrifice their interests for their ideals. Faith in bitcoin can be almost religious, if the ideals are aligned. But v30 disaligns those ideals for many maxis, and thus undermines the "faith" in bitcoin.

Same here.
There's nothing major that I want to buy and that I feel is worth the price.
Real estate is overpriced (in most countries) as far as I'm concerned and "owning" it means paying rent to the State (property taxes) and increasing one's attack surface (State, lawsuits, etc).
Physical metal is hard to hide for more than small amounts. Custodied metal and ETFs are a joke.
But what you can easily do is what I would call "DCA out" : educational presents for the kids, better day to day items, life experiences for the family (trips, etc), small investments to incrementally boost your business, and working less by just partly living on sats if the time you buy allows you to do more of the things you want to do (be with family, hobbies, etc).

It's the first time the Core devs are on the wrong side. Including my "bitcoin childhood heroes" like Adam Back and Greg Maxwell.
The blocksize war didn't faze me. And I dumped Bcash as soon as I could.
It's the first time I'm actually concerned about the future of the project. And it's because the Core devs in power seem to be woke shitcoiners. That changes everything.
I'm not selling, yet. I'm still hoping for a third implementation.

Whether I'm still here or not in 2033 will depend a lot more on the software than on price.
Will Core regain their senses? Will we get a third implementation? That's more important to me than price on a certain timeframe.
If the project goes in the right direction, price will inevitably follow. If they keep being crazy, all bets are off.

I would expect nothing less from an ethereum promoter.
Why even put a 100k limit? Let's go big! Let's do 1TB op_returns. Or even better, let's put infinite size op_returns.
If an op_return limit is censorship, we've had censorship for a long time in bitcoin.
The pruning argument is really bad too. That means no archival nodes. That means no electrum servers too.
