A "fun" little homelab experiment that I had to debug: over the last week, I set up a private Piped instance for myself so that I can watch YouTube videos without input from the algorithm: https://github.com/TeamPiped/Piped
It was pretty easy to set up, and importing my subscriptions worked flawlessly. But a few hours later, I discovered an issue: the import function scrapes YouTube for the latest videos from every subscribed channel all at once. But updating those subscriptions uses a different function that will only work if the Piped instance is an internet-accessible enpoint (like a public instance would be) and given that my instance has no public endpoint (it's accessible only on my Tailscale network), Google couldn't send me subscription updates. So my feed was permanently frozen in time at the moment of that first successful import.
To fix this, I extracted the authentication token from Piped (it's in their documentation) and wrote a small bash script (or, about 20 small bash scripts while I was debugging) that will run on a schedule using my Synology NAS' task manager. The script:
- Uses a docker command to forcibly wipe Piped's subscription database in the backend
- Opens a JSON file with my exported YouTube subscriptions
- Strips out the majority of the data leaving only the channel ID with exactly 24 characters (this took forever to figure out)
- Hands those IDs to the Piped backend container to process
- Piped receives the subscriptions and begins the import process as if it were for the first time
The result of this is that Piped fetches new subscription data using its import process rather than its true subscription feed process. And so now it works without my having to expose a public-facing endpoint. The only downside is that if I subscribe to a new channel, I need to make a new JSON export to ensure that it's imported during the next task execution. Using Piped, that takes about a minute, so it's not a huge deal.
But hey, it works!

Luckily, the SanDisk micro SD card that I used in my camera today didn't corrupt anything. A quick win!
I'm using the "Reggie's Film Negative" recipe, which I think gives everything a sort of nostalgic vibe. I'll likely keep this in place on my camera and leave the more "hyper-realistic" photos to my phone whenever I need that sort of thing.

The hardest part about being a Linux user right now is checking Flathub, seeing a bunch of incredible new apps, and struggling because you already have nice apps for those things.

When I was 13, my father purchased two media center laptops for me and my younger sister. Dell Inspiron 8600. He even paid a bit extra for high resolution 1920x1200 screens, dedicated ATI graphics, and massive (for the time) 80GB hard drives. It was more storage than I knew what to do with.
Anyway yesterday I bought a 128GB micro SD card and casually stuck it in my camera thinking "this is one of the smallest forms of storage that I own now" and I had to pause for a second and digest that.

It's so funny to me that with a modern 5G connection in the US, you can easily download 1GB of data in less than 10 seconds, but your monthly high speed data is still often capped at 5GB because there's neither regulation nor competition. And even if you have more on your plan (like I do at 50GB) you can still technically hit your cap in under a minute.

One thing that I really hope for in the future is improvement for both @nprofile…evkc and @nprofile…ctk3 when it comes to searching for and finding residential addresses. The majority of the time I try to do so, they can't quite find what I'm looking for. Typically the home address of a friend. I get why this might be challenging given that people don't typically spend time mapping out private residential areas, but I'm not sure how else I'm supposed to avoid falling back to Google or Apple when it comes to navigation.

It used to be that convenience would cost extra money. Now, convenience costs data. Typically the easiest, most convenient products and services will require you to agree to policies and terms that include the ingestion and sharing of your data with whatever and whoever makes the most profit. Money is still the goal, but corporations can typically extract far more out of your data than they can out of you. Especially when you sign it over permanently, at no additional cost to them.
It's exhausting to do research into each and every thing that you do to ensure that you're taking the most private route. In some cases, you may have no choice at all. This is why privacy is a continuous process on a spectrum and not an outcome. There is no such thing as "perfect" privacy. There is only the effort that you choose to (or choose not to) put in to ensure that you remain within control of as much of your data as you possibly can.

@nprofile…mdt9 I've heard this about past devices from Star Labs which admittedly did make me nervous. And I've had a mostly bad time with my StarLite M V tablet. But the StarFighter seems to have benefited from the long hardware development period and refinement put into the V2 variant that recently shipped.

Alright, a quick Star Labs StarFighter review after using it for a few weeks.
Good:
- It works! Very well, actually. It's a completely functional, well-working laptop.
- The display is nice. Not the best I've used, but I'm very used to OLED at this point. It's perfectly fine for what it is.
- It stays cool almost all the time. Which can't be said about most modern laptops, especially in the Linux space.
- Battery life is decent. Again, not the best, but better than some other laptops I've had recently (such as from Lenovo or Framework).
- It's shockingly lightweight! This has been a nice surprise.
- It stays quiet. Again, can't be said about a lot of modern Linux laptops.
- The removable webcam/mic combo is really cool.
- Suspend and resume works better than any other Linux device I've tried. Basically flawless.
- I've already received one firmware update via the LVFS. Awesome.
Bad:
- There's a weird firmware bug that randomly causes repeated key presses. I hope it's fixed soon.
- The haptic trackpad isn't the best. It feels nice, but clicking it just isn't what I'm used to. But I'm also used to MacBooks.
- The speakers aren't good. Not as bad as Framework, but still not good. The speaker grills are mostly fake with much tinier real holes for the tiny speakers. Fake speaker grills at this price make me sad.
- I absolutely hate that there's a USB-C port only on one side. My charger is primarily located on the other side while I'm on the couch, so it's awkward for me to charge. Another USB-C port on the other side instead of having 2 USB-A ports there would have helped a lot.
- Very weird arrow keys.

@nprofile…2pg0 Yep, not a bad thought. I think that if I still truly relied on Google for anything massive, I may put more thought into it. But given my use now, while it is one of my older accounts (2008!) I don't think it's worthwhile. In the event of an emergency in which I lose access to 1Password itself, I have a recovery option in the form of my family members. And if that fails for some reason, my Google account will be the least of my worries. 😆
Should also mention that I'm running GrapheneOS, and so the actual benefits of Advanced Protection are somewhat limited to me. I only did it because Google themselves recommended it for me.

I've had a TrimUI Brick for some time but haven't used it very much. I decided to swap my Retroid Pocket Classic for the Brick in my small tech bag just because it's smaller and lighter. And so I started looking into the latest firmware updates for the device and all of that, which brought me to a Reddit thread about the latest release.
As it turns out, not only did someone find SSH credentials to root into the Brick, but they also discovered that it runs Tina Linux, which (as far as I can see) is based on OpenWRT. The TrimUI brick is basically a router that plays Game Boy games. Technically gaming on Linux.

@nprofile…50vv I didn't. I've only been seeing the posts about them having taken it down. I do hope that the feedback works. But I also know that it's somewhat inevitable that the experience continued to degrade, even without the consideration of AI. A subscription will become more prominent, ads will become a larger part of the free experience, and I doubt that everyday users will be prioritized, especially when a decent competitor comes along.
Maybe I'm just generally pessimistic about social tech now.

I might go ahead and delete my Discord account over the weekend. Things are looking pretty bad for it. I never enjoyed using it to the extent that I loved its predecessors, like AIM, but I do think that it was fairly fun while it lasted.
To be clear, while I understand why it might be easy for some people to do this, as with tools like Facebook and Twitter, these platforms were originally created to encourage human connection and interaction. It's very difficult to sacrifice that when not everyone that you know will be willing to do the same. And just saying "well, then those people aren't worth it" devalues the human experience of connection and interaction that was had.

Acquired today:
A UPS (finally).
Two additional 22TB hard drives.
There will be some NAS construction this weekend. I plan to install these additional drives and take the opportunity to move from SHR-1 to SHR-2 in the process. That'll leave me with a little over 40TB usable, plus RAID-style safety, which is just nuts.
Once completed, I also think that I may start experimenting with using Navidrome over Jellyfin for music, and using Kavita over Jellyfin for books and manga. I'll save Immich for later if I feel like it (but there's nothing wrong with Ente and I'm happy to use it).

I think my #FOSS project for this weekend is going to be an attempt at moving from NextDNS to Unbound and AdGuard Home, and then setting that up to work with Tailscale. I have absolutely zero DNS experience, so I'm sure it'll be an interesting time. The plan right now is to get it running in Docker on my Synology NAS and see how that goes.

@nprofile…hygv I think that's the case in a lot of tech lately. I've seen a lot of the same rhetoric in my transition towards open source software, with people religiously attached to the idea of FOSS to such an extent that no sane middle ground exists.
I've been trying (hard) to persuade myself not to fall out of love with technology just because other people are becoming more extreme. As they are in all sorts of ways lately. But it'd tough.

Hot take, maybe? LLMs and AI are not inherently bad. It really comes down to:
The companies that run them and how they act.
The insane impact that blind trust has on multiple financial markets.
The horrible environmental impact of unchecked, unregulated growth with minimal thought put into solutions.
Hallucination is also a bad side effect but I don't really consider that a real downside as long as you know how to use the tool (and recognize that it is a tool in the first place).

I'm not in Florida right now which means that I have the opportunity to get a COVID vaccine despite not being "eligible" in my home state. So I'm doing exactly that. Most people travel a bit for the holidays, and so if you live in a health-hostile state, it might be a good idea to do the same.

I only just finished Expedition 33 but holy shit. What a story. I speak all the time about how Final Fantasy X is my favorite game and story of all time. This was absolutely on par for me. Just great in every way that I can think of. I'm so excited to see what this team does next.
