If I don't vent the tunnels, they heat up to 50°C - now, on sunny spring days.
Shade netting on top of the tunnel in summer is effective against overheating.
Heat doesn't affect the film though.
Sometimes it's said one should use white styrofoam adhesive tape on the metal hoops to protect the film from overheating. But the stuff dissolves to microplastic, too. I would never use it again.White paint should do the same job.

I have a tunnel with the same type of cover.
It's three years old and the plastic in the fields between the mesh is becoming brittle and is starting to dissolve to microplastic.
So I'm thinking about replacing it with a proper UV stabilized greenhouse film which by experience last about 10 yrs+.
What I don't get about the mesh stuff is, why is it green? Doesn't that mean all light interesting for plants is filtered out?

Last year in August, I started a new job. It's with the local district's craftsmen's association. We offer job orientation programs for 12-14 year old pupils.
I was asked to start a gardening program.
The location in a commercial estate next to a (little used) petrol station is far from perfect and waterlogged.
However the spinach, green in the snow, chard, carrots, coriander etc I planted/sowed with the kids last year made it through 20cm of snow cover under their fleece.

Due to a water damage on the groundfloor, my setup for #propagation is a bit more improvised this year.
The stack with euroboxes in the utility room is for germination.
Germinated plants are moved under LED growlights inside or into the greenhouse.
Since we still have down to -10°C 14F in the night, there are heat mats set to keep the reused mushroom punnets with seedlings above 3°C.
Plants without need for heating will move to the wallpaper table.

Well, this is not exactly a harvest - yet, but considering the snow outside, I'm quite chuffed by the #WildGarlic showing up under the workbench of the greenhouse.
Also in the picture are some saffron crocuses going over by now.
PS I didn't even notice the roe deer in the second photo when I took it.

My wife and I gave up flying about a decade ago. However, to quench the longing for exotic places, we allow some exotic plants in our garden. We monitor lists of invasive species of the EU and Switzerland though.
So far, #CyclamenCoum, EucalyptusGunii (in pot) and #Sarracenia (in special bog bed) are doing well this winter and provide some colour in grey weather.
The trend for the coming 14 days says -10°C (14 °F) at night and more snow though. A winter like in my childhood.

The feeling of loss is often overwhelming. When I look out of the lounge window, I try to ignore the wasteland of agriculture beyond our patch. If I keep pondering about the loss, it just becomes too much.
So I try to spot a hawfinch, a dunnock, a snake, a dragonfly or what so ever is in the garden because of the way we garden.
When I'm really lucky, I get a decent photo to share here - as an incentive to others to enhance their surroundings.

Warning:
If you're thinking about buying seed from #semiagricoli on eBay, reconsider.
I ordered seeds last year. They took ages to arrive. By the time they did, I couldn't give feedback anymore.
They charged 7x postage, but sent them in 1 envelope.
Worst though, none of the seed turned out as what they were sold.
"Elephant garlic" is a red onion. All black and violet tomatoes are plain red ones and, as far as I can see, only two varieties (with a bland taste).

On the package of sweet corn Mezdi it says: distance 40cm between rows and 20cm in row.
Richards system (roughly summarised) is 5 plants sown in a pot of ~10cm, planted out in rows. 2 weeks between sowings for extended season. (correct me @npub1fqf…ajkk)
My modification is, that I sow in module trays of 144 cells and plant 5-6 plants in close proximity with 30-50 cm between those groups. The place between is filled with butternut squash, gherkins or hokkaidos. Works very well for me.

It was a great plan:
- Plant lots of gherkin plants.
- Harvest early.
- Have loads of pickled cornichons.
Reality:
- Do not get around harvesting the gherkins.
- End up with 25+ kg of gherkins of up to a pound each.
- Search for huge glasses.
- Pickle and ferment them anyway.
Variety: Vorgebirgstrauben
Area: 6.4 m2
PS: Luckily the "Russian picklings" didn't do well this year and "Vert petit de Paris" was a mislabled mini cucumber...

Thanks @npub1c6r…q724 I had not heard of Ethiopian eggplant before.
I have the same problem with Solanum melongena here as you. Some years they are just not worth the effort.
Some specialist seed traders here seem to sell seed of Solanum aethiopicum. That will be an interesting experiment for next year.

This is early even for me. Normaly, I plant #potatoes in September/October (autumn in the northern hemisphere).
Today I planted some varieties I had been given last year by a friend. She gave me a few tubers of special varieties.
This year after harvest, my wife and I did taste testings.
Bamberger Hörnchen, Violetta and Franceline made it back into the garden today.
The gherkins in the next bed will probably use the space while the tatties are dormant.

High alert around the pond. Two #robins are taking on a big #GrassSnake.
Minutes later, when the snake has disappeared among the stones and flowers around the workshop, a little fluff ball comes out of the yew hedge nearby.
The snake shouldn't have been too hungy though as it had a big frog minutes before...

The idea with the cabbage white decoys on brassicas was on Gardening Australia years ago.
I made dozens of them and it didn't work at all. Like you, I did the research later on to find out it's a myth.
I reckon, it's a case of "Don't believe everything they tell you on TV" - yes, Jerry Coleby-Williams of GA, I'm talking about you. 🙂

In December, I started watching all episodes of the Danish programme bonderøven about a smallholder's life.
Many things are familiar, but some are new to me like the replaceable swing tops for recycled wine bottles.
I tried to find an EU supplier, but only got something from China. 😞 One swing top cost me 0.73€.
If anyone knows an EU producer - that does not charge an arm and a leg - I'd appreciate a hint!

Influence of light exposition on germinating seeds.
Our daughter bought some tropical fruit. I tried to germinate pitahaya and passion fruit seeds.
The latter were put directly into seed mix. The pitahaya seeds were put in a bowl of warm water until the first seeds sprouted. Then I just dropped everything onto the seed mix.
Initially, I used the meagre winter sun light. You can see the first seedlings are too stretched. Later ones germinated under LED grow lights and are more compact.

Unfortunately, all parts of and complete plants need paperwork. There are still masses of plants going from the Netherlands to the UK on a large commercial scale. Small seed companies and even the RHS stopped though. So I don't get my RHS member seed package since I live outside the UK.
Edit: i.e. we could exchange seeds across the channel - though not legally.

Northern German blackbirds seem not to have noticed, that the aronia berries are not sweet. We have to net them - otherwise they are gone. English blackbirds might develop a similar taste.

3 weeks since I began laminating the new wooden #polytunnel. My clamps didn't like the rain, hail and snow we had that much. So when I took the last hoop out of the fixture for lamination today, the tools got a spa treatment after 3 weeks outside.
The rust was removed with a wire brush on an angle grinder and then the clamps were oiled.
Picture shows state of two clamps before and after the treatment.
Now I need a shower and a good brush too - not made of wire though.

Cheap wooden #polytunnel
The first hoop is laminated, edges planed & routed and oiled.
The instructions of the glue say "not below 6°C". We have 7°C. The one done yesterday morning had to stay in the fixture all night and the glue still could have had some more time.
So instead of 2-3 hoops/day, I just get one done.
Found a nice spot for storage. 🙂

Cheap #polytunnel
The fixture for the hoops is finished. As I didn't have any material for the steaming chamber lying around after the fail of the drainage tube, I've cut the battens in half. After putting them through a thicknesser, they are 10mm thick and bend well over the fixture.
Now I can laminate layers of battens.
I just have to use different lengths for the layers so the joints don't overlap.
~ (3m+3m+1.4m) (2.5m+2.4m+2.5) (1.4m+3m+3m) with outer layer slightly longer. #gardening #DIY

That looks really cool!
Waterproof plywood is the obvious choice for a project like this.
However, I'd like to build a series of polytunnels for as little as possible. The most expensive thing will be the 5 years UV stabilised film at about 300,-€. I hope to build the structure of a 8x4.7m #polytunnel for about 100,- to 150,-€.
It's an experiment though.

's partner and @npub1mmc…suj7 basically figured out what the new #gardening project is about: I want to use very low grade timber from the hardware store, bend it, laminate it and make hoops for the next #polytunnel .
There is no prize, but congratulations you two!
The fixture for bending the wood is rather large unfortunately. So I'll have to disassemble it after the build.
To keep the wood off the ground, the hoops are fixed to flat steel bars in the ground.
I'll keep you posted.

So @npub1mmc…suj7 figured out correctly, that this setup is to steam bend wood.
However, the purpose of the bent wood is not clear yet.
By the way. The pipe I used is thermoplastic. I was aware of that and had hoped to get away with it... The next steaming chamber will be made of thick wooden walls.

This is my total harvest (234g) from approx.1.5 m2 of #SweetPotatoes in an old greenhouse.
It's 20+ years old and the polycarbonate panes are completely done. It gets warm though.
The harvest from beds in full sun outside was approx. 1.5 kg/m2 (average of all beds) this year.

Since it's from Australia/NZ, I used to grow #WarrigalGreens (Tetragonia tetragonioides) in the greenhouse.
Two years ago, I planted a few seedlings on 3.5x0.8m outside for the first time.
This year, after winter temperatures down to minus 15°C, the plant seeded it self and although we harvest it, it currently covers roughly 5x3.5m of ground.
So Warrigal greens are now definitely on my invasive species watchlist!

What's particularly annoying is when the software automatically after hitting return (for a new line) replaces deliberate #CamelCase with a hashtag in lower case.
I use camel case a lot and understand your frustration.
The SuperbOwl example was just to show, that "a little code" might not be that easy to produce.

Life has a funny sense of humour sometimes.
For years, I struggled with #SweetPotatoes here in northern Germany.
This year is the first with a half decent harvest in quantity and size.
There are 11 kg of tubers, some of really good size in the 40c60x12cm eurobox in the picture. That makes for a 2kg/m2 yield on 6.6x0.8m of the bed (the last 1.4m are soy beans).
After planting them, I was told by doctors not to eat them any more for the high oxalic acid content. 🙄

The advice to let runner beans dry on the bed does not work where I live. The pods started to get mouldy in the wet weather and I had to cut my losses.
As every pod/bean needed inspection and the pods where too soft for thrashing, podding the beans of 2 beds(1.4kg white, 4.5kg scarlet podded beans) took nearly 5 hours.
As their moisture content was much too high for storage, I had to dry them a bit in the oven. At least that was full.

Today I wanted to use up some butternut squash.
To balance the earthiness of the beetroot, I used garlic, frozen, green coriander seeds, red chilli and juice as well as zest of a lemon for the squash.
The butternut cubes were fried in hot olive oil and the aromatics were just added towards the end. Salt to taste.

The only way I usually tinker with the soil here is to add compost (#NoDig).
When I started the new market garden with fresh green waste compost, the pH was very low (5.0-5.5) and the plants had obvious nitrogen deficiencies. This normalised with the pH moving up to 7.0 and more soil life activity. I don't know about raising it further. @npub1fqf…ajkk @npub1v5a…ny6w

That is very interesting, Richard.
I tried to pull a 90l container with my own compost from pH 7.0 to 8.0 using kilos of ground eggshells (as that is what we have).
The aim was to plant a hazel inoculated with truffle fungi. It didn't work. The buffering capacity of the compost was too high. It stayed flat at 7.0 and I didn't bother to get an expensive bush. Maybe I should source some lime instead and restart the experiment. Thanks!

What's the pH of your soil with/with out the lime? Do you know?
Australian (TV) gardeners always talk about "sweetening the soil". With my pH of 7 (-6.5) there is no point. And I never have signs of calcium deficiencies like blossom end rot around here.

It's not an object of beauty and the blade isn't retractable any more, but a scrap piece from a wooden kitchen worktop made a new handle for my saw.
It took me about half an hour to make it. If your are reasonably well paid, you might say it's more economical to buy a new saw. But we can't afford that kind of attitude any more (even though I fall into that trap too sometimes).
A bit of sharpening with a triangular file and the blade was as new.

The temperature's dropping, the humidity's rising in the tunnels and greenhouses and some tomatoes started to mould. Time for the last grilled tomato sauce of the year.

Nighly temperatures are in the one-digit figures (°C) recently. So I decided to #harvest the squashes and to let them ripen in front of the south facing living room window.
I grew the butternut (22.1kg) between sweetcorn on two 6.4m2 #NoDig beds using [@richrollgardener](https://toot.wales/@richrollgardener ) ' method. The 2 beds yielded 40.39kg of cobs.The cleared beds will be planted with potatoes tomorrow.
Wind took down a bean teepee and I had to harvest them.
Hokkaidos grown between 2 beds of beans. #gardening Basil Pluto drying.

You're right, work in the market garden will be so much more comfortable.
So far, I sometimes took the car (instead of the bicycle) to the garden, just to have a place to shelter on long, cold, rainy days.
Now, I can brew a cuppa or even cook a meal with the veg from the garden in the new shed.
And finally a place to hang all the fleeces so the mice can't dig (and chew) into them.

The big #upcycling project is on the finishing line.
After the bike shed on the driveway, I've finished the outside of the new tool shed in the #MarketGarden .
The smallest crate was used for the roofs and the porch.
Most of the material was re-/upcycled.
Some paint, screws, scaffold boards and a lock were bought.
Total costs were less than 100€ / shed.
The offcuts from the boards will make some shelves for the tool shed.
A bit exhausted as most of the work was done with hand tools.

Yesterday, I finished an #upcycling project.
My wife was able to secure 3 wooden transport boxes from one of her projects at work. Usually they are destroyed/made to fire wood.
I disassembled the smallest for building material. The medium sized one became a bike shed on our driveway. The biggest one (L2.9mxW1.6mxH2.5m) is going to become a new tool shed for the market garden.
The bike shed was mostly made from stuff lying around from other projects. Paint and some parts cost me 81.40€

I prefer the single dahlias for the same reason.
Two years ago, my wife and I went to #RHSHydeHall. At the Global Growth Vegetable Garden, they have many interesting, unusual food plants including a bed of #dahlias. Put a new perspective for me on that labour-intensive "ornamental". 🙂

The new #pond and #BogBed are getting there!
Though they are in light shade from the house, the animals begin to find their way there.
Especially with small ponds it's good practise NOT to let the vegetation from the sides, i.e. lawn, grow into it. (Yes, I mean you, #CharlieDimmock of #GardenRescue !)
Our first little pond was sucked empty by capillary action form the soil and plants surrounding it. No leakage in the liner.
A capillary break around the pond can prevent that.

Have you tried dahlia tubers? For the last two years, I grew Bishop's children from seed, with the intention to eat the tubers.
How could I? Left all the tubers in the ground over winter and most of them came back this year.

I don't know what went wrong this year, but judging by the foliage, it could be my first good year of sweet potatoes. And it's not that I didn't try before!
The pic is of 8 August. Now, the vines want to take over the garden.
Don't give up. The day of sweet potatoes will come in your garden, too.
Well, having said that, I'd better wait for my harvest of tubers... :-)
