I guess we're neighbours, I live in Sweden these days, and I recently got an MSX and sn MSX2, both from Philips. Never had any dealings with MSX computers before, so that's going to be interesting to explore.

Oh, yeah, I use virtual workspaces in just the same way, they're central to how I use my modern computers. I never found tiling window managers limiting, especially since all of them I use(d) have the option to have windows float if needed (I rarely need that though).
I started out on xmonad, used that for several decades until it seems to become inevitable that wayland would be forced upon me. Used i3 for a while to get used to it then made the switch to sway. Still not convinced that wayland is the future though, even though the fanbois keep banging on about how it is. It feels like a step back with all the crashing, flashing screens and pain-in-the-ass that screen capture is. But hey, that's progress I guess.

I completely agree with you on the paradigm issue. I don't have a desktop either, just a window manager (or what is called a compositor in newspeak), and even go a step further in that I don't believe in having to drag windows around at all or change their size by dragging on the corners or sides. Tiling window managers is where I'm at.
I can imagine that older window managers don't particularly fare well on laptops, I don't think portable computing was particularly common in the late eighties / early nineties :)
I do like simplicity as well. Window managers should get out of the way, is what I believe, and just let one do what they need to do without making a fuss about it.

So, my latest video is up, in which I discover what everyone already knows: LCD TVs suck for retro computers. I bought a TV at good-will but it fails to impress. As an intermezzo, I take the carthesian product of a set of retro microcomputers on the one hand and a set of display devices on the other and conclude that modern-ish flat-screens are just not a good fit for old computers with composite video output.

Odd, for some reason posts from my peertube instance don't show up on my snac instance.
I don't see anything immediately wrong in the logs, but it's a bit hard trawling through them after the fact. I'll have to do some more experimenting, probably set up a dummy channel on my peertube server to test in real-time.

Yay! Thanks to Bruce Simpson, my vim-classic, the non-slop fork of vim, port for #FreeBSD is now merged.
Now it needs to percolate through to the quarterly package repo, which'll take another month and a half, but at least that doesn't need any manual intervention.

Cool, I'll be keeping an eye on those projects, even though I'm mostly interested in the original thing.
I think the 'sam in a can 2' is the most close to the original? The pandemonium sounds like it is a whole different machine altogether, with lots of extra stuff that the original didn't have.
I mean, I appreciate the systems of the time for what they were and I don't often add extra devices that have CPUs that are more powerful than the actual main processor of the original system to add features.
Don't get me wrong though, I'm not knocking your efforts in any way, I'm just a weirdo in that I like the original stuff :)

I just scooped up a Philips VG9020 MSX 2 computer, which was high on the wishlist. It was advertised as having some issues so will need repair. A VG8230 as well, so soon I'll have a duo of MSX 2 machines on the workbench \o/

My 2 cents:
Clean the area with vinegar and a toothbrush to neutralise any leaked nastiness. Then check those traces for continuity. From the pics I'd say you have at least a couple of broken traces.The IC is probably fine.

Contributing to the #FreeBSD ports collections sometimes feels a bit hopeless. You put in a bit of work to update an existing port or add a new one, submit it, and then ...
... nothing.
For weeks, months sometimes.
Until you've all but forgotten you made the contribution, and out of the blue you get an email that the patch was accepted or rejected.
Not the most motivating way of getting involved I must say.

I had to provide some extra structural support with diagonal beams of wood on the back though, otherwise the cabinets would flex too much. They're not really made to be standing up like this, normally they're mounted hanging against a wall. But it's what I had available (I didn't buy them new).

In other news, my permacomputing datacenter is in production (has been for a week or so already) and I'm now moving services from my dedicated server with OVH to there. I can't stress enough how easy it is to install. And how fast it loads the web ui compared to friendica or mastodon. It all just feels human instead of abstraction on top of abstraction on top of abstraction to grind down the gears of your server and client machine. It's a unix daemon, not some over-engineered piece of docker compose monstrosity.

Hmm, I don't think it's that. It happened again, and I then went and changed the badlogin settings in server.json to make the timeout 10 seconds and restarted snac, but login was still hanging in ironfox on my phone. Worked fine in firefox on the same phone. Then after 20-30 minutes it started working again in firefox as well.
Weird stuff, I'll have to look into that. I do have the reverse proxy set to forward the original client ip to snac, so that should all be good. Also, ironfox and firefox would be using the same ip anyway.

I can second the advice to go lattice. Yosys is super, the proprietary tooling from xilinx snd altera is bloated and clunky.

I've been meaning to try snac for quite a while, and once I did I was sold within the first minutes. It's not one thing, just a number of things snac got right that jive with me.
My primary objective was to reduce resource consumption. I started my fediverse journey with self-hosted mastodon, then switched to friendica. Both eat CPU, RAM and disk I/O like a pack of hungry wolves and still perform poorly.
Snac is one simple daemon without a need for a database server, a caching key/value store or web app framework that takes minutes to boot. When I start snac, it's ready to serve within seconds.
It has proper man pages that explain all you need to know.
There is no javascript framework that bogs down your browser and gets all the async api calls tangled up in a big ball of tardiness. It's just good old server-side rendered html.
It's a really solid unixy application, easily installed as a FreeBSD package. It does what it needs to do and does it without too much fuss.
Oh, and the no ai policy helps too.
It's certainly not perfect, but definitely more perfect than both mastodon and friendica.

I don't think there's an official definition of the term 'chip tune', but the SNES falls under that umbrella. It's not just playing back a stream of digital music, it's actively playing samples of instruments at different pitches and mixing multiple channels and all that. It introduces hard limits to what is possible and that makes it chip tunes in my book.

Hmm, annoying, I got logged out from #snac on my mobile, and now it won't let me log back in :( Just hangs there forever, or just prints 'gmc' and nothing else...
