I see the benefits of ecash in some contexts, but for mining payouts specifically, wouldn’t an LN setup with blinded paths or reusable payment codes already solve a lot of these concerns? Miners running rigs can surely operate an LN node and keep it always online, making payouts private without needing to change the payout scheme entirely. Curious if I’m missing something here.

The only on-chain transactions I make these days are for opening or closing #Lightning channels. Why? It lets me spend my balance in many small, cheap transactions later, improves privacy, and also gives me tons of inbound liquidity!

Ironically, non-technical users would benefit the most from open-source software. However, it seems to be mostly used by technical people.
More people reviewing the code should make it more trustworthy for those who can’t verify it themselves.
Is this an education problem, or is the poor UX of most open-source software really the biggest problem?

The analogy of Bitcoin/Lightning as Gold/Paper money oversimplifies things, and might even make LN seem weaker than it is.
Gold-backed paper relied on trust, whereas Lightning is cryptographically secured by Bitcoin itself. LN channels aren’t just claims - they are a set of pre-signed transactions that either party can enforce on-chain at any time.
Of course, LN has challenges like liquidity and channel directionality, but these are solvable trade-offs.

I have mixed feelings about inflation. It does not seem necessarily bad, but at the very least, it is unnecessary - it does not solve much.
If money creation is fairly distributed and productivity grows, inflation would not be harmful. But fiat inflation is never fair. It is a hidden wealth transfer.
If we produce more, what's wrong if money simply retain its value? 🤷‍♂️

If people find a monetary system that is fair and allows for real saving, assets like real estate, historically used as a way to store wealth, will likely drop in price. The savings premium disappears when money itself can hold value.
Real estate will still have a price, but without the artificial monetary premium attached to it - how much lower would prices go, especially excluding premium real estate? Maybe it is already slowly happening? 😉

Hey @nprofile…v72v , I have been thinking more about eCash and its potential role beyond private payments. Given Bitcoin’s potential ossification and UTXO constraints, do you think eCash mints, if designed with some form of cryptographic transparency (proof of reserves), could evolve into decentralized community or family custodians?
Basically, a way to minimize reliance on large custodians or ETFs while keeping efficiency and some level of trust minimization. I feel like transparency at the protocol level (without affecting payment privacy of course) is the missing piece to making this viable.
I am specifically thinking about the holding use case here for non-technical family/community members rather than payments.

I think the issue you refer to is still enforcing repayment/liquidation without a trusted oracle, right?
BTC can be locked and USDT issued, but we would need an oracle (or something) to confirm repayment and release BTC trustlessly.
I need to explore this more myself, but maybe federated DLC oracles could help? I do not like overcomplicated solutions - they usually do not get used - but worth looking into, I guess.

If Tether on LN + DLCs can be combined, could we finally see Bitcoin-backed lending without trusted third parties? It seems like the biggest missing piece to making such lending both trustless and more accessible.

Taproot Assets could change Bitcoin-backed lending and payments - especially with Tether’s recent move.
No more wrapped BTC on centralized blockchains - no trusted third parties for collateral. And now, fast USDT payments on LN.
I have mixed feelings about it. But knowing how many people rely on USDT - and having some respect for what Tether has built - I am cautiously optimistic.

Great podcast, @npub12rv…85vg with @npub1guh…6hjy! Bitcoin and LN clicked for me early on, but eCash (like Cashu) is taking me a bit longer to fully wrap my head around. I see the privacy benefits, but I am still working through the long-term scaling vision.
If Bitcoin ossifies and UTXO ownership remains constrained, LN channels might not be accessible to everyone. In that case, do you see a future where small, trusted mints run by families and communities become the dominant way to scale?
Either way, I appreciate the work you are doing. It is an important experiment!

Every cycle, the same argument pops up:
- Altcoins are faster than Bitcoin.
- They scale better.
- They have more features.
But here is the thing - speed is not innovation if you sacrifice the foundation.
Bitcoin’s goal was never just to be fast - it was to be trustless and permissionless. Altcoins introduce trust at some level, and once you need trust, you are back to where we started.
We already have fast, trust-based payments - that is modern central banking. Scaling something that relies on trust is not innovation, it is repackaging the old system.
The challenge is not just making payments fast, it is making them fast, secure, and censorship-resistant at scale. Bitcoin is the only one actually trying to solve that.

If we ossify now, censorship resistance and store of value (owning UTXOs) will be limited to a few.
- If users cannot own UTXOs, they do not truly have self-sovereign wealth.
- If they cannot open LN channels, they cannot transact cheaply without a third party.
In my opinion, when considering any protocol updates, the priority should be scaling solutions that maximize UTXO ownership and non-custodial LN use.
As Lopp well pointed out, email started decentralized, but reputation and UX barriers led to centralization. Could Bitcoin face the same fate if ossification happens prematurely?
Is it already too late with institutional adoption and potential BSR coming? Which discussed BIPs still have a chance and should be prioritized before ossification? Honestly curious to hear thoughts.

This price point is awesome for using as a unit of account! Since prices around us in Europe are still in EUR (unfortunately), I can just knock off three zeros in my LN wallet, and it’s basically the same as EUR.
I will either enjoy this again when we hit the 1M price point, or better yet, when prices are quoted in sats - eliminating the need for a manipulated unit of account altogether.

Everyone is obsessed with Bitcoin’s price in USD, but USD is a terrible unit of account - its supply is heavily manipulated.
Measuring Bitcoin in USD clouds the real-world value of things. While it’s convenient, people need to understand this error.

eCash is kinda unnecessary. If you are taking on high risk anyway, super efficient centralized systems can do the job just fine. Bitcoin and the Lightning Network are next-level awesome.
