No one was flying in or out of RHV at that moment because the storm was bearing down on the airport. (It was a day of thunderstorms everywhere in California due to remnants of a tropical storm, infamous for 1000+ lightning fires.) The direction of the photo to the west was toward SJC 30R/L arrivals. The big planes had weather radar in the nose well before 2008. So even though I didn't know status of SJC arrivals, I'm sure they briefly went into holding patterns or diversions.

I lived in the Berryessa district (which nobody even in San Jose had heard of until we got a BART station). But I was in your area for the June 21, 2008 storms which dropped some funnel clouds. I was at RHV Airport when the storms got my attention. Photographed a funnel cloud. I redeemed myself as a stormspotter: the funnel dissipated while I was on the phone with the City of San Jose's Ham Radio emergency communications director. He could have activated the EOC if it developed.

I remember it. I was near home in east San Jose where an unusually strong thunderstorm got my attention: lots of lightning, clouds moving in opposite directions near each other = rotation, first time I saw backlit-green clouds. Then I drove away fleeing hail. Having noticed that, I flunked as a stormspotter telling a friend on Ham Radio, "If we were in the midwest, I'd think we were about to have a tornado." 30+ minutes before the tornado. 10 years later I got to redeem myself.

If you haven't already found it, the SF Bay Trail is a great cycling route for lots of future exploration of the Bay Area. Or actually it's a collection of great routes - there are gaps. The eventual goal is a continuous ring trail around SF Bay. 🤔 Ummm... OK. Didn't expect that. The purpose of monospaced fonts is when columns of text need to line up, like in a text editor, or for symbolically displaying source code and program output because of their association with text editors.
When I'm coding, my text editor uses monospaced fonts. For other uses, proportional spaced fonts were made to be easier to read.

That's only true for sans-serif fonts. The "crossbars" are called serifs. "Sans" is French for "without". Though sans-serif fonts are intended for use in headlines, they're usually the default text font on web browsers from an ancient-digital era 20+ years ago when screen resolution didn't resolve serifs well. So the best suggestion is to configure your system and/or browser to display text in a serif font, and adjust Mastodon preferences to "use system font". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serif

Since Mint is based on Ubuntu, you've still got a connection to a for-profit entity. It funds development from its commercial distro and support contracts. It's a mixed bag but has its benefits for the Open Source community. An analogous situation exists for my Linux distro Fedora which is developed by a non-profit organization that was established by and is largely funded by Red Hat. But Red Hat is now a division of IBM. IBM didn't destroy RH, but seems to have let RH modernize IBM.

I explored the Redmond Caves in Redmond, Oregon (near #KRDM Airport, served by Alaska, AA, Breeze, Delta, United). These are some small lava tubes worth a quick stop. Bring a flashlight/headlamp and a spare when exploring any cave.
If you think Redmond sounds familiar, this is not the place. You're probably thinking of Redmond, Washington in the Seattle metro area where Microsoft HQ is. This Redmond is in Eastern Oregon.

34 years ago, August 25, 1991: Finnish university student Linus Torvalds announced he would post source code of an experimental OS kernel he wrote. The difference was pointed out to me long ago by a geology professor at College of the Siskiyous (yes, I started college in a town called Weed). The day before a field trip around Mt Shasta, he showed us the seismograph on campus, and jumped up and down in front of it to show it had no effect on the sensor. The next day during the field trip we saw the site of the seismometer. When he jumped up and down, he said, "now it's showing up on the seismograph we saw yesterday at the campus."😀

minor nit and suggested correction: in the paragraph about more quakes being displayed near Seattle and Mt Rainier, it's because there are a more seismometers there. That's the name for the sensor. Seismographs only display data where seismologists work or for public display, not necessarily near the sensor(s). Though your point is correct that more sensors in those areas mean more and smaller quakes can be detected.

I actually can believe that. I've been in Portland for a year and a half (since the day 737 MAX doors were falling on the city). I remember your warnings about the then-upcoming ice storm during the following week led me to finish bringing the first load of stuff just in time before the flash-freeze hit. Then 6 months after I got here, you were leaving Portland. So that is indeed a year ago. But you're still Oregonian even though you live in Canada.

My best catch for "sounds like more than 2 engines" was in 2007 when I was studying for my instrument rating written test at outdoor seating of a Peet's Coffee in Santa Clara CA, occasionally noticing the endless stream of 737s and A320s departing SJC. Then "more than 2 engines" got my attention. I saw a 747SP with a livery I didn't recognize. It turned out to be the infamous flight where Fry's flew their new-to-them 747SP N747FU VFR (!!!) on the Bay Tour. And I saw it take off.

I dunno about "like" but I was among many cyclists in Northern California who had to get N95 masks in 2018 due to the recurring smoke events. The usage pattern as we cyclists compared experiences became using an N95 (or better) mask at AQI>=100, limit distance of rides at AQI>=150, don't ride at AQI>=200. #cycling

Keep in mind the "Mayday: Air Disasters" show covers accidents in each episode significant because of how the industry learned from them. Many things which make flying safer today, such as reading back radio clearances or Crew Resource Management procedures, were from lessons learned in accident investigations. Aviation started becoming safer when investigations changed from blaming someone to finding the real cause(s) behind the errors and recommended measures to avoid them.

You're probably right - lots of people will react like that. But the more one learns about the safety training of the pilots and cabin crew, the more reason there is to keep calm and let them handle it. Or in case an emergency escalates, maintain your calm so you can help others.
But it's mostly pilots, crew and avgeeks who can think like that. Anyone who has a fear of flying would have to get past that first.

An issue with a door is a lot different than with a door plug.
I looked up the diverted flight on that route. I see the pilots arrested the climb at 10,000ft, low enough that passengers and crew can breathe. So that sounds like a cabin pressurization issue. Yeah, they couldn't proceed with that problem. In a case like that, the need to divert is obvious. They got everyone safely on the ground.

I certainly appreciate your insights. I arrived in Portland the same day 737 Max doors were raining on the city. (OK, only one.) That first week, you alerted me to the upcoming ice storm. I was able to plan for the first load of stuff to be unloaded before it. But I cut it close. The flash freeze hit while I was on the bus back from dropping off the rental truck. Above freezing boarding the bus. Last few blocks walking home it was 25F/-4C and winds gusting to 30mph/48kph/26kts.

Fry's never had a Milpitas store. But not far from there was their San Jose store on Brokaw Rd, which was also the company headquarters. (Everyone figured out the mystery owner of the 747SP was Fry's from the registration address at 200 E Brokaw Rd, San Jose which was Fry's HQ.)

Some time between 2008-2010 I was on a SWA 737 from BUR to SJC and spotted an opposite-direction 747SP zip by about 1000ft below on the same airway. I couldn't quite recognize the markings. But it wasn't a NASA logo so it wasn't SOFIA. So it just about had to be the Fry's bird N747FU, also based in California. After landing I looked it up and confirmed it was the Fry's bird. It was being ferried from SJC to its hangar in SBD after dropping off its owners. 3 minutes at cruise altitude!

Yeah, well they had to sell everything before they went bankrupt. At the time NASA still had big plans for SOFIA and began to get an insatiable appetite for 747SP spare parts.

Fry's Electronics made enough money for a while that in 2007 they added a 747SP to their fleet of business aircraft. It was painted white with a blue stripe, often adding decals for whomever they were flying... Ballet San Jose, NHL San Jose Sharks and later flew the Fry's logo when flying SJC-LAS-SJC daily during CES. So apparently the timing of the two may not have been a coincidence after all. The smaller quake in the Ochoco Mtns which was removed, considering the timing, could have been a triangulation error of the larger more distant quake.
