* The freedom to innovate! Anybody can write some code and connect it to the Fediverse, and we have already seen an incredible explosion of creativity that all the billions invested in the commercial social media are not matching.
* Many users also report that they have felt more accepted, less harassed, and more at home in the fediverse than they ever have anywhere else online. I have no reason to doubt them.

Imagine two identical #3social #networks with mainstream users. Same number of users, same connectedness of the social graph, same demographics etc.
Social network A only has an algorithmic feed. Social network B only has a chronological people-I-follow feed.
What would the usage numbers look like in comparison? Numbers of posts, numbers of likes/replies/boosts, growth trajectory, etc?
I would expect somebody has done some research on this. Anybody know of any public results?

For some, it is a way to sell ads into an addicted audience. But we are trying to get away from that with the #Fediverse. So if it's not that, what is it for, exactly?

The best #tech #support of any company I've ever interacted with comes from Prusa, the Czech #3D #printer maker. Consistently, they listen to what you have to say, and right away have a good answer. No how-are-you-doing-you-are-so-important-to-us bs that only aggravates everybody, but straight answers to each question, always backed up with links, sometimes with more background info than you had any reason to supposed might exist.

@npub1c3w…8xn9 So I actually have a script that scrapes all @foo@bar identifiers of the Markdown that is fediforum.org, and puts it into a JSON file. That's so I can run another script which does webfinger lookups for profile pages, so we can auto-generate hrefs to the profiles from the handles for the site.
Technically, very easy to provide that intermediate JSON. However, I am not certain that everybody would appreciate that even if it's all public information and they could do it themselves.

I wonder what average lifetime of a Fediverse handle is. Compared to an e-mail address, and handles on other social media systems.
I suspect it is much shorter. How much of this might be intentional vs inadvertent?
Examples: firefish.social disappearing. Moderation policies on a server changing. People trying out the Fediverse and only settling on a place after some trial and error.
What can we do to make this process as smooth as possible?

@npub1k08…6xvn @npub198j…d3fm I really don't like the !group@server syntax, as a software guy this communicates "not that!" to me.
Personally I think we should use user@host, just like e-mail, and have software figure out whether it is e-mail or webfinger and what's behind it. And if I follow with an e-mail address, then I want to be sent e-mail instead of ActivityPub. Bonus feature: declare @user@host to be identical to https://host/~user and https://host/@user if you must.

I'm observing the community has some work to do to promote the consistent use of Fediverse user handles.
I'm going through the registrations for #FediForum, and note that attendees use all sorts of variations on their handles, including @user@server, user@server, https://server/@user and @user (???)
I would guess that attendees at FediForum tend to be more knowledgeable about the Fediverse than the average user, so it seems safe to say that the world is confused about fediverse handles.

@npub1deq…0sus @npub1sy5…02fh Have you considered calculating a score between 0 and 1, where 1 means "definitely allowed" and 0 "definitely not', and use a threshold for approve/deny? That score then can be calculated by taking several measures into account, including weighted distance in the social graph (you have that for distance=2, as yes/no, but could be more complex including multiple paths to candidate), whether you or your friends have had successful comment threads with them etc.

Interestingly, in the next two years WEF says "disinformation and misinformation" are the world's largest risks.
The Fediverse is a great tool in the toolbox to help with that. Unlike so much media, and social media, it is fundamentally constructed to not be a manipulated channel.
We really need to get those CEOs and billionaires and politicians that hang around in#Davos to understand that, and help finance building it out. After all, they just agreed it's a real problem!

About half of the Fediverse addresses typed by FediForum attendees into the session notes are missing the leading "@".
People typed in their very own Fediverse handles. And because they came to FediForum, it's very likely they are very well acquainted with the right syntax.
Pretty strong circumstantial evidence that most people won't be able to distinguish Fediverse handles from e-mail addresses.
I have long believed that they should be the same.

Is it “#social #media”? (It doesn’t sound quite right to me: I post “media” only rarely)
Is it “social #networking”? (Not sure, it’s different from offline networking, and I feel networked already even without the fediverse)
I’ve been playing with the term “social #communications”: I’m here to communicate with you all, but not 1-on-1, but socially, where everybody else can overhear what’s being said.
What to you think of the term?

Here's an interesting question. To me, anyway :-)
As the #fediverse grows, and an ever-broader set of apps talks #ActivityPub and extensions to #ActivityPub, how do we ensure that the overall architecture of the system remains consistent?
Example from the past: WebDAV used HTTP extensibility as it was intended, but arguably they deviated from the architectural principles. (A consequence: it remains a niche and many apps that could've used it don't)
Who else is worrying about things like that?

Another reason I don't like "federated" as a term is this:
If somebody says something is federated, how many things do you think are federating? My default assumption would be: maybe a few dozen. Like the federated 50 US states, or the 16 states in the Federal Republic of Germany, or maybe a handful of healthcare organizations in an identity federation.
My default assumption is not: tens of thousands, as the fediverse is today, or even millions as the fediverse may be tomorrow.

@npub1f4k…eunn Part of the problem with a term is that one can come at this from so many angles (like tech vs governance) and the terms will likely be different based on that.
Right now, what I'm personally interested in is the name for a technical architecture pattern. Like client-server, or thin client, or P2P, or LocalFirst, or ... I think "federated" or "decentralized" is insufficiently precise.

We need a name for the architectural style where there are many servers, many of those instances of the same software, interacting with each other over well-defined protocols (so one can temporarily forget about the many servers if one wants to), while each server is independently maintained / governed by its own community.

But a glaring example: almost all fediverse instances are operated by what’s essentially autocrats: server admins. Only in very few (like social.coop where I am) do the governed have a say in the rule making.

vs.
"We have great opportunities here. Let's charge forward and change the world."
A form of conservative (from latin: conservare) vs progressive (from latin: pro-gredi) I suppose.
