First it marked out a race-course, in a sort of circle... There was no 'One, two, three and away!' but they began running when they liked and left off when they liked, so that it was not easy to know when the race was over... 'Everybody has won, and all must have prizes.'

guys, a few questions:
* what is "deterministic random"?
* what are the options for PoW?
* what are the implication for physics of the chain?
* how does it affect thermodynamics of the chain?
* can it be shared publicly, not in in a closed Discord server?
* why can't we use Nostr Armada? https://armada.buzz/c/3c08b8ab54dd2f75c1b6d8b1dbf4bc999a9d5c57911cd0497db16f250c08fe34/92dd95811ff8d7c8c83c2189163b3cbf7e3f2fe8ceaa4f6adc77d503e1b50e50

@nprofile…jw6n like your posts on entropy. I wonder if @nprofile…l5we you have any takes on that. It looks we need to revisit this topic with the community to explain why dice rolling, card drawing and other entropy production methods are useful. It also feels like there's no golden path or well defined approach or family of options to generate your own entropy so some learning material can be useful for people.

We'd like to talk about the concept first in the open. Implementation can follow through appropriate process.
We will upload code to decentralised Nostr Git so anyone can interact as you describe. Github limits discussion to people with emails and access to certain resources which is anti-decentralisation in our humble opinion.
Anyone can take our article already, put this into LLM and have working implementation based on Knots or Core within 1 hour.

Can be wrong but Nostr is the best community to discuss this. Everyone can already review our proposal here as long as people are willing to join the discussion.

Added a light touch on this proposal to be soft fork. It would be interesting to see miner, node runner and developer community reaction. If you have ideas who to share this with it would be also appreciated. Also in the age of LLM we would anyone who disagrees with the language to take this as an opportunity to draft their version. Hopefully we can find working solution through community work.

From what we see, people don't actively think about it. Removing discount is a must. All existing implementations violate the rules. We need a new discussion and consensus to restore out property rights.
More scientific/physics based take on @nprofile…qxj6 would be like:
Most of Bitcoin's internal history (Big Bang + rapid expansion) happened within 1st halving therefore 1MB is the only safe option we have really.
>Do you think there is currently a clear way to protect against the block size inflation attack vector?
As of now we are actively exposed to this because 1/4 witness discount supported by all codebases. Spam is just one symptom. "Bear market" is a fiat version of this. Chain exceeding 1TB is another more real symptom. The root cause is witness discount paired with a bigger block. We must return to 1MB and no discounts.

2026-07-11 09:19:55 UTC

"If demand for blockspace increases, the protocol is supposed to allow sats to compete for that finite memory. Higher fees are not a bug, they are the market revealing the demand of irreversible memory and the value of the satoshi with respect to 1 current block of time at difficulty D. When we instead manipulate the size of that finite memory surface to suppress fees, we don’t eliminate the cost of demand, we redistribute it throughout the system to the nodes (a tax on the network)."

Maybe it was created for good reasons but de facto it acts as monetary policy pricing bits at different values so that 1 bit is no longer equal to1 bit within a block. @npub1838…aslh @npub1vcv…my50 what is 1MB block size is equivalent in our universe:
* One bit associated with a Planck-area element of a horizon — quantum of information.
* One Planck area — quantum of information-bearing surface.
* One quantum of action (h) — minimum physical event/update.
* One irreversible bit erasure (Landauer limit) — minimum entropy increment.
* Maximum entropy increase per time step — closest analogue to Bitcoin’s 1 MB/block.

* 1MB block should be hard constraint, same as 21M
* Abolish discounts and return to pre SegWit
* review Bitcoin through thermodynamic lens
I know you are starting with 3rd point as most grounded in physics. I wonder what is best message for everyone else. I assume “no discounts” is a good one building on top of BIP-110. 1MB is what Satoshi said, maybe it’s even stronger message so that we don’t why we are here in a first place.

The problem with SegWit is 0.75 MB Gap.
Effect is the effect. Write a 1 MB inscription, pay for 0.25 MB, externalize the difference to every node on Earth, forever.
You can clearly see the effect of this on the graph. More bytes per satoshi committed since 2017.

"The gap. The writer paid for 0.25 MB. The network stored 1.00 MB. The 0.75 MB in between is uncompensated. It is not paid for by the writer's fee. It is not paid for by the miner's revenue. It is not priced anywhere in the consensus rules, the fee market, the wallet UI, or the block explorer. It is paid for, in storage and bandwidth and validation cost, by every full node operator who has ever run Bitcoin Core, present and future, in perpetuity."

As an amusing thought experiment, imagine that Bitcoin is successful and
becomes the dominant payment system in use throughout the world. Then the
total value of the currency should be equal to the total value of all
the wealth in the world. Current estimates of total worldwide household
wealth that I have found range from $100 trillion to $300 trillion. With
20 million coins, that gives each coin a value of about $10 million.
So the possibility of generating coins today with a few cents of compute
time may be quite a good bet, with a payoff of something like 100 million
to 1! Even if the odds of Bitcoin succeeding to this degree are slim,
are they really 100 million to one against? Something to think about...

Another factor that would mitigate spam if POW tokens have value:
there would be a profit motive for people to set up massive
quantities of fake e-mail accounts to harvest POW tokens from
spam. They'd essentially be reverse-spamming the spammers with
automated mailboxes that collect their POW and don't read the
message. The ratio of fake mailboxes to real people could become
too high for spam to be cost effective.
The process has the potential to establish the POW token's value
in the first place, since spammers that don't have a botnet could
buy tokens from harvesters. While the buying back would
temporarily let more spam through, it would only hasten the
self-defeating cycle leading to too many harvesters exploiting the
spammers.
Interestingly, one of the e-gold systems already has a form of
spam called "dusting". Spammers send a tiny amount of gold dust
in order to put a spam message in the transaction's comment field.
If the system let users configure the minimum payment they're
willing to receive, or at least the minimum that can have a
message with it, users could set how much they're willing to get
paid to receive spam.

We need to go beyond BIP-110.
We need The Mass-Value Bound on Bitcoin.
The M-Bound: every byte of a block must be backed by 100 satoshis of inscribed value. One new consensus rule — M(t) = τ_t / W_t ≤ 0.01 — prices memory against value, auto-tightens as subsidy halves, and makes the Landauer attack economically non-viable.

Every produce or service can calculate (or at least estimate) how much energy they spent.

Experimental energy exchange metric on Bitcoin.
As we know Bitcoin mining consumes a lot of this energy but it's not wasted. It can be used see how such energy translates into Bitcoin.
Logic as follows: if you exchange energy for Bitcoin at block height X and then exchange Bitcoin back for energy at block height Y then Energy Y - Energy X > 0.
As you can see on the graph first two epochs had energy dropping because supply was expanding rapidly. Upward trend locked in in 3rd epoch.
Key insights:

Actually I think my definition is wrong.
I wanted to quantify how much joules were converted to satoshis.
It sounds like “permanently sunk” can be misleading. It’s more like how much joules you’ve “exchanged” for satoshis. Given that Bitcoin is thermodynamically sound and Kelvin is pegged it allows us to use it as exchange method.
I’d like compare energy equivalents of oil, bitcoin and electricity. I start by saying that the true price of Bitcoin can only be measured in joules. This is what I try to quantify - how much joules were exchanged for Bitcoin at any given block.
Chart should up into the right. It should align with Jeff Booth definition of deflation. Prices in Bitcoin go down (or at least stay the same if there’s no mining and we all use lightning) because more and more joules exchanged for Bitcoin.
I’m also sick of fiat price definitions, comparing to gold and power law as it only describes social side but not physics.
Let me know if I have any missing pieces in my thought process.

It would be nice to review methodology and equations but we could be be talking Terra Joules and Barrel of Oil Equivalents after block 640000.
Keen to hear feedback on this.

It is crazy indeed! Make me wonder if we are the first civilisation who's done that or there's more. I see your point that fee market can push it but I guess we will see.

Finished reading @nprofile…qxj6 !
A few reflections:
* Bitcoin defies modern definitions of Quantum Computing
* Need to revisit if we need any Bitcoin upgrades other than upgrading our understanding of Bitcoin
* Felt like creators / authors / gods of this universe spoke to me

Nice, I'm processing rest of chain but it'll take a day or two to complete.
Talking to LLM it says that 0.042264 is now a limit because of monotone convergence of cumulative nonce temperature so it's never overshoot. Is this your expectation as well?
Couple of questions about cumulative nonce temperature then:
* Is it irrational number from Bitcoin perspective since it's always evolving as blocktime goes by?
* Is it a constant from Bitcoin perspective? Like it has same status as π or e?

Great thing is that we can help changing it! Read @nprofile…qxj6

"So, the conclusion is not that Bitcoin changes economics, nor even that it changes physics, but that it
changes us. It forces us to confront permanence, responsibility, and truth in the same act. It gives us a
medium where nothing is forgotten and nothing can be revised. In such a world, the question is no longer
“What is Bitcoin?” but “What are we prepared to inscribe?” For in the end, the ledger will preserve
whatever we choose. And we will live inside that memory forever."

It make me think hard about BIP-110.

"If there is a frequency to Bitcoin, it is this: a quiet insistence that truth must be purchased, that time must
be earned, that reality must be conserved. We can tune to that frequency or ignore it, but the chain will
not bend to accommodate us. The ledger grows whether we understand it or not. Its permanence does
not require our permission; only our witness."

Re-calculated @nprofile…qxj6 equations over 441k blocks.
Thanks @nprofile…dprn for providing feedback and guidance! .I wouldn't be able to make it without you. Curious to hear your view on results for cumulative block energy and block temperature. Keen to run it on a full chain if 441k results look promising.
@nprofile…v2lt @nprofile…a6u7 your feedback will be appreciated as well!

Applied your feedback! LLM confirmed they match the paper.
Also had to change domain to https://artel21.vercel.app/bitcoin-energy.html as the last one run out of credits.
It looks my previous vibe-coded physics were biased to external definition of energy and how minining blocks related to energy use in this world.
So the graphs look like this now.
Total Energy seems to approach 1.8e+9 Joules.
Cummulative Nonce Temperature seem to approach 0.042 normalised.
Does it better describe inside of the Bitcoin Universe in your view?
Some questions I need to clarify for myself.
I wonder if my previous Block Energy and Nonce Temperature calculations were essentially a ratio between how much energy from our universe was conserved inside Bitcoin? Is it "Black Hole" effect like we irreversible send our energy to Bitcoin yet we still can manipulate it since all bitcoin energy is relative to inside of that universe?
I wonder what's your read on this. Especially with relation to what my previous equations were showing vs now.
