Review for those who have played Tropico games before: this is Tropico 5 with some new items that made the game extremely busy. there's no story, like Tropico 1, but the missions always have their little spin however with no absolute direction like the OG so you just build and play catch.
If you like the series, its worth playing around but spend little to nothing to play. personally, if i wanted to play further, i'll just reinstall Tropic 5

Conclusion: 5/5. I’m going to buy the game from the devs just to support them. The freeplays (called Utopia Builder) does have a finite life each game but the real challenge is in starting with nothing and building the city with the trials and tribulations along the way, crafting the final zeitgeist (and how you dispatch of detractors). Once all the updates are done and DLCs are out of production, I’m buying it as a final package. This one is up there with OTC

Gripes: Planning the city is VERY hard as there are adjacency bonuses for districts plus the desire to locate “hubs” close to them to offer special buffs. Planning is all done mentally and you have to remember. There’s no way to mark things off or reserve locations for later. If you forget, too bad. Outside of that, nothing disappointing about it. If you have any, please let me know. Either i already forgot or maybe i can help with roadblocks you are experiencing

Story: just like FP1 but i found the story a bit better. It progresses nicely within the specific goals, broken down by chapters. Rather than your only enemy being the storm, now the city is huge and behaves more like a city. All the people want different things and may get a little angry if they don’t have your way. Oh and choices are mutually exclusive so you are going to get the full experience. The main story is a tutorial but shows you all aspects beautifully.

Music: Nothing to jump head over heels for. It does set some ambience as all games try to accomplish and this one keeps pace. I find the sound of the city hustle and bustle takes over a bit but its kinda enjoyable, almost like background music in itself. Speaking of sounds, they could have better notified event sounds or indicators. Sometimes my expeditions are dormant only because i thought they were still working. Yeah, they are pretty important to keeping the city alive

Gameplay(2/2): also you no longer build only buildings but districts consisting of a certain number of tiles in the city limits. Sorta like dropping zones in SimCity. Then you can build researched buildings in the districts to enhance your city whilst shaping your zeitgeist (yes, it is a critical part of the game). The randomization of resources really steers you in different directions each playthru. Best way to experience it is to try. Trust me, it won’t disappoint.

Gameplay(1/2): As described, its a city builder with some extra twists. The laws are really neat and with the added pressure of choosing the city’s “zeitgeist” which can either appease or anger communities/factions unlocking some great benefits or detriments to your progress. No matter what, you are faced with very specific decisions that you cannot revert as taking the middle path is near impossible. This greatly enhanced replayability as each faction steers you a certain way

Overview(3/3) ... so I’ll be picking that up again in the future to try them out and enjoy the game even more. Should’ve tried on “Captain” difficulty but figured since I’m sold on spinning this up again, I’ll try then. Highly recommend this one, even if you don’t play the 1st. They aren’t identical just similar in the general concept and universe. More of a Dawn of War to DoW 2 instead of a Half-Life to HL2.

Overview(2/3) ... is explained. Its a city builder but with some great challenges. Gotta make food to feed people, get resources so buildings function, find heat sources to battle the uber winter, and pass laws to help govern the city and determine which path it will go to survive. Plus you can send expedition teams to find other resources and fill gaps where your immediate vicinity fails you. Overall, this game is dynamite! 5/5. theres a new version with some other features...

Frostpunk 2
Overview(1/3): Frostpunk 1 but now instead of a small town that’s considered large at 500 population, now you are building a city considered large at 50,000! No more individual needs except now you try to appease communities and factions, all with different demands and visions of the city. For anyone who hasn’t tried Frostpunk 1, this is a standalone game but having the OG background does give a better semblance of “what happened to get here” plus some lore...

Conclusion(1/2)-overall, highly recommend! 4.5/5 and its missing the extra half star because of the finite life of the game. Maybe achievements help with this but I’ll let you be the judge there. The pace of disasters and troubles goes well with the research and tech advancements so you are always struggling. And harder difficulties are HARD! Next will be Frostpunk2 and if you are looking forward to that one, its worth picking up #1 to get some lore/background

Gripes(2/2)-i found the only real enjoyment was the initial struggle of starting with nothing and trying to sustain. After that, restart. The mechanics of the game are very hidden. I had to search online to better understand things. Personally I’m never a fan of figuring out a games mechanism myself. It should be available to me in the game. Only time reddit is helpful

Gripes(1/2)-nothing really bad about the game. The extra scenarios have the “lets add DLC” feel to them so if they cost you lots of money, save it. If they are dirt cheap, they do add some additional elements that alter play style a little but still are very DLC feel. If you want to play Frostpunk2, I’d recommend playing the other scenarios on easy just for some additional lore. I won’t spoil with details. “Endless” mode is not like simcity. Its quite finite and gets repetitive

Graphics-i could crank to the max on my machine and they are really good. Neat effect with the generator and other buildings creating smoke from chimneys and i enjoyed the trickling of snow and whisps of wind. Really created a neat atmosphere. Outside of that, its a regular joe mgmt game like you’d expect

Story-there are a few scenarios but the main one is kinda like a long tutorial but guided by events that force decision. In the midst of global cooling, lead a group of people to not die in a new city powered by the generator. Cold gets worse, you find survivors, grow your economy, and enhance survivability but people get torn with your leadership direction and the cold just gets worse. Its pretty neat but only replayable on harder difficulties for more challenge

Overview(3/3)-the game has some neat scenarios but is designed with a “endless” map where you just live as long as possible. I found the game has three phases. 1. establishing the basic. If you fail this, you are toast. 2. stabilizing the economy. Here you have flexibility and it gets intense with events and storms that increase the cold. 3. enduring til the end of the scenario. Here is why i found “endless” pointless. Once you stabilize, you kinda won.

Overview (2/3)-they introduced a clever circular grid with the central focus around the generator. Buildings of different sizes snap to the grid and you need careful and meticulous planning to ensure buildings (workers/residents) benefit from buffs but most importantly, heat. Another really neat layer is Laws you can enact. They have very direct “no turning back” direction which can have great, mediocre, or negative consequences. Some benefit now but hurt later

Frostpunk:
Overview (1/3)-well crafted city management game. Quite Tropico-esque but the real neat spin is the environment. You start in a crevice with a “generator” in the height of global cooling. Your job (as Captain) is to guide the group of people to survival by gathering resources, researching survival techniques, and battling the ever increasing cold. The central point is to ensure people don’t freeze or starve to death

Overview: a managerial, choices-matter, space game where you command a sorta Startopia shaped space station and need to build it up to (obviously) survive and explore the galaxy for your new home after an incident destroyed the moon killing everyone on Earth. I’ve read that ppl see this game as a Frostpunk/Startopia mix but that’s only because of the choices and the station layout. I’d say the game is a managerial version of Chernobylite. Chernobylite: (part 3) there are some missions that feel like filler and this guy being a hardcore "stealth" hunter (i literally crounch walk past baddies and they don't attack me) makes this kinda too superficial. i feel hard mode would just be the same thing except longer and more waiting. i foresee boredom.
the story and mechanics of the game are stellar and made playing to the end worth it, just unpolished... 'cept that Black Stalker. DAMN!

Chernobylite: (part 1) decent survival style game where you frequent "The Zone" to bang off some missions to ultimately plan your "heist" of storming the Pripyat power plant.
Concept wise, great game! story was very intriguing, as you progress, you make decisions that craft your path. you gather resources to manufacture weapons and gear and build up your base so companions don't leave and thus help with resource gathering and join you on your heist

Manifold Garden (2/2). just fall down and you sorta teleport to the top. fun when you didn't want to take the stairs.
very isometric, neat colors and a very je ne sais quoi ending. acid trip without the lcd? anyway, was enjoyable and pretty quick, a few hours. this one, i'd say find a deal only cuz it plays about 3-4 hours.

Lab Rat. another puzzler and a rather good one. using light beams and rearranging blocks to advance the rooms. the puzzles are actually quite challenging, took me about 6-7 hours to finish. the story and the funnies is what really makes this one. you solve puzzles by "testing" rooms for the AI controller. lots of references to movies and other games. very funny interactivity (albeit a bit kiddish but still humorous). ramps up really well and throws lots of variety in so doesn't get boring

Pools. this one i pulled the plug on half way through. you are in some labyrinth of a spa with pools, water slides, saunas, massive rubber duckies, etc. i have no idea what the point is. felt like an aimless walking sim to test out some graphics/physics engine improvements. i'll give credit to the latter but graphics didn't look right. anyway, i didn't like it, too boring and not thought provoking. if you like that stuff, get it for free

got a ps controller that connects to your machine or does the xbox controller handle it well? found games that require finesse (i.e. stealth walks, soft steering adjustments) the KBM just doesn't do it. got killed too many times in Metro cuz of tapping a walk key lol

just finished Metro Exodus... highly recommend! got the trio at a deep discount on GOG so keep an eye out to save some $$ if you're interested. game really pulls you in. top 5 FPS imo
