As a small scale producer of vegetables I am regularly asked why our vegetables are priced the way they are. What makes them so special and why, given that we sell direct don’t they cost less? If there is no distribution chain taking their cut, shouldn’t our vegetables be cheaper? The short answer is a solid NO, the long answer lies in the concept of being Frugal vs being Cheap.
A Frugal mindset analyses spending via the lens of quality, longevity, benefit to the purchaser’s life and value for money. A Cheap mindset simply evaluates the price and will tend to settle on the lowest cost, regardless of any other factor. While it is understandable, especially in the post-Covid economy to be careful with your spending, being Cheap always puts you further behind in the long run. Frugality takes a long term view of wealth, health and quality of life and balances them against the cost of an item.
Our farm is managed with hand tools not machinery. Our plants are tended to with love, high level knowledge of plant and soil health, wisdom and a passion to serve our local region with food that nourishes and heals the body. For example our soil is aerated with a broadfork rather than tillage and our Spinach is harvested with scissors and washed by hand.
Commodity vegetables are produced with tractors, a workforce that is indifferent to the end product and consumer, packed onto trucks and driven all over the country to wait in warehouses before going back onto a truck and driven to a supermarket or green grocer. A bag Spinach or a head of Lettuce could be 4 weeks old before you even see it on the shelf. Have you ever bought a bag of Spinach then taken it home only to have it go off in a few days before you even get through the meagre amount contained within?
Our Spinach is $10 for 250g minimum, has excellent flavour and a crunch when you bite into it, lasts weeks and weeks after harvesting and the quality far exceeds everything else available.
Coles Organic Spinach is $4.80 for 100g (more expensive than us) and in the same time span as consuming one of our bags, you could buy 4 or more bags of flimsy Spinach with no mouth feel, limited nutritional value, end up discarding up to half of it and have a miserable experience consuming it as it rapidly goes off in front of you. No wonder people “don’t like salad” they are consuming garbage.
Our produce is for people looking to improve their culinary experiences, health and quality of life all the while supporting a local, family run business that is improving their local environment.

Update on our second attempt at running a locally based market garden. Our landlord is an aircraft mechanic and pilot. He recently flew over the farm and took this photo.
This was a weed filled goat paddock when we started 9 months ago, we now have 34 of our 40 initial market bads shaped and planted. Some beds are onto their second rotation.
We are selling organic vegetables to the local pub, a health food shop in the nearby city and have launched our home delivery service.
Still a lot of work to go but we are making great progress.

There are nowhere near as many pest bugs in Australia as in the USA for whatever reason. I have found that keeping a very clean garden and mulching with compost keeps most bugs away. We have a species called Cabbage Moth which like to eat all brassica's so we use insect netting over all of those crops. It equates to a 20% shade cloth.
We kangaroos and rabbits everywhere here which require the equivalent of deer fencing with smaller gauge fencing at the bottom for the rabbits. Koalas can climb over and come through but they don't eat vegetables.

Thanks Matthew, I am hoping this garden is very photogenic and that we can eventually do a lot of farm tours. We are in southern Australia so are currently in Autumn/Fall. As we are in Australia and on the coast we get almost zero frost and have a moderate climate so can grow all year.

"I cannot recommend Rainbow OMG enough for their supplements.
Firstly, they are a small family business in regional VIC.
They make and sell great quality whole-food products at affordable prices.
I have been taking their Beef Organ capsules (liver, heart and kidneys), Green Machine capsules (moringa, turmeric, Kakadu plum, chlorella, black pepper), Turkey Tail and Reishi Mushroom (separate) capsules.
After 10 years of experimenting with expensive supplements and vitamins to manage my MS, swallowing entire handfuls of tablets and capsules a day (at one point I was taking an average of 20!!), I’ve managed to narrow things right down to 3 capsules in the morning and one at night from Rainbow OMG - and this is the best I’ve ever felt since being diagnosed!
My need for ‘bed’ days are nearly entirely gone, save for the nights when something out of my control disturbs my sleep and I can’t fall back into it easily. This means that I have practically defeated fatigue: my main and most problematic MS symptom!

I spent some time this week pruning this small, heritage variety orchard in the town I live in. Pruning has mostly been done by volunteers in the past and it showed. I have restored shape and airflow to all of them and would love to get them to mulch underneath with woodchips before Summer.

My observation is that what most people call "diseases" in their tomatoes are just old leaves. Cut all the old leaves off below your fruit and flowers.

We had a huge day yesterday. It is a Root week in the Lunar Calendar so planted all of our garlic and onions for the year as well as this months beetroots. That equates to 600 onion transplants, 200 beetroot transplants as well as over 1200 garlic bulbs, all now in the ground.
2000 transplants in one day with a baby and 6 year old complaining the whole time 😄

Other than general Dad and Market Garden duties my Sunday project was to assemble this Lego table for my 6 year old son, it was his birthday on Saturday.
Some people find flat pack assembling difficult, I find it very easy. As someone who doesn't like to talk, instructions without words are easy for me to follow as I have always learned by quietly watching others then trying by myself later.
He is loving the table and all the new Lego he got for his birthday.

We make what we call Gardenkraut, and it is a combination of whatever surplus veg we have around so the flavour is different everytime.
Our latest batch has Bok Choi, Carrots, Beetroots, Celery and Garlic. We use a mandolin slicer on all veg except the garlic which is shaved with a cheese grater

We do our tomatoes at 30-40 cm, but we use the tomatoe hook trellis system so they are tall and heavily pruned.
I'd love to get into flowers eventually as well.

While I would never say I had a wonderful time in the very extended Lockdowns we had to endure, I certainly did not waste any time while we were in them. Our market garden was built with sweat equity and repurposed garbage.
Your compost system sounds great except for the woodchips, they will take far longer than everything else to transmute into compost. I would use them in the very bottom of your pile to allow airflow from underneath.
Azomite and Green sand are both great mineral and magnetic amendments for your soil too, the raised bed looks great. You really don't need a huge garden to cater for one household

Sort of, its a shadehouse in Summer. This one is made from Polypipe and what we call Star Pickets (T-Posts?). Ram the posts in and the right sized Polypipe simply slides over the posts.
This frame only has to hold 30% shade cloth for 6 months of the year so doesn't need to be strong, it bears no weight.
Our main Greenhouse is a 15 metre long polytunnel, that is the Australian version of the Farmer's Friend Caterpillar Tunnels. https://www.farmersfriend.com/p/classic-caterpillar-tunnel
That frame is all metal and has cross bracing so can hold the weight of trellised tomatoes, cucumbers etc.

Yesterday was harvest day and I decided to crop out this entire Beetroot bed as they never really grew to any decent size. These "Blemmy" Beetroots as we call them will be used in our Rainbow Salad mix (shredded carrot, beetroot and celery in a container) or dehydrated and turned into a powder to add to yoghurt or as an ingrediet in out Gardenkraut ferments. We are a tiny operation so we value add as much as we have time for.
This particular bed used to be a driveway, all I did to it prior to planting was broadfork it to break compaction. Next it will be flame weeded, broadforked again, top dressed with 400 Litres of compost then transplanted with 100 Butterhead Lettuce.

Most of these will still work, you might have to use more than one seed to compensate for germination % decrease over time.
Onion seeds are useless after 1 year so don't bother with any old onion seeds.

Compost is a critical element in any Regenerative Agriculture system. In our farm it is they key driver of fertility and we use the no dig approach of applying all amendments to the soil surface allowing "gravity" and worms to incorporate them into the soil.
We currently have two composting systems, one is our Chicken Run which is a deep litter system and the other is piles made from horse manure and weeds from the gardens. The chicken powered compost is much higher quality and is pictured below.
This is 400 Litres of sifted compost applied to a 10 x 0.75 m market bed. This is the first compost this bed has received, next time it will get 200-300 Litres.
The bed was broadforked to deeply aerate before the compost was applied to the top and we planted this bed with 2 rows of celery. Celery likes fertility and water.
We are currently lightly planting our beds as compared with other similar market gardens as our soils were biological dead when we started so we are going easy on the soil for now.

Yes there are 99 heads per bed 33 x 3. Depending on the time of year they take 50-60 days to mature. All of our veg is sold within 1 hours drive of our town essentially. We have a local bakery that buys this lettuce to put in all their salads.

One of the few benefits of growing in town is the lack of animal pressure. We only have to keep rabbits out of our garden where we live.
Kangaroos are the equivalent to deer in Australia and they eat everything too 😉

These are Butterhead Lettuce which have proven to like our hot climate. They are very attractive and delicious, I can grow them year round here which is excellent for cash flow

Yesterday marked a huge occasion for us. We purchased an old caravan that will soon be the shopfront for our Market Garden.
We will now be able to serve the huge amount of tourists that drive right be the end of our road daily.
2023 is the breakout year for Rainbow OMG.

This Lettuce bed was about to be swallowed by Oxalis and required a meticulous hand weeding yesterday. I am a perfectionist and love the look of a weed free farm.
