When choosing a title, first I go to Amazon. How many books have the same title? Too many, and I drop that idea. I also practice saying it out loud, telling it to someone. If it sounds clunky, too conceptual, wrong focus, etc when said out loud, I drop it. Or if it's simply too hard to say.
I scored such a hit with When We Were Murderous Time-Traveling Women, I feel the pressure on this one.

I have discovered the holy grail! !!The title for my memoir!
"Twisting Lies into Truth"
The copy after the colon is worming its way into the creative channels of my brain. Something like:
"Twisting Lies into Truth: Claiming My Family’s Hateful Role in Our History"
Open to tweakings

#ScribesAndMakers If paper books stopped being produced, how much would you miss them?
I'd make my own. I'd be part of a wild underground cabal. We'd swap our books using secret mailboxes. We'd pledge not to disclose the location of the mailboxes upon pain of death. Soon enough, we'd be running printing presses, stocking free little libraries, building brick and mortar libraries. Suddenly, the entire paper book industry would be regenerated.
You can't keep a good book down.

#TimeTravelAuthors post-size snippet
As I scraped and washed my plate, Tip-Top paced the tiny living area. My sword clanged against the sink. Whatever spell was controlling us had allowed me to change into my pajamas for the night, but when I’d woken, I was re-garbed in my red jumpsuit. It was disconcerting. The jumpsuit was awesome, but a woman liked to be in charge of her own clothes. To prove I could, I re-tied the dauphine’s cape around my neck

So glad. It has taken me a long, long time to understand, within the cacophony of what I'm taught, what I believe.

2026-07-30 13:16:00 UTC

I do believe this: our ability to experience God is solely a function of our senses. All of the theological harrumphing over the centuries has entirely missed the point. So does, IMHO, centering prayer that asks you to go deeply into the vacant space of your mind. We are bodies, and our deepest connection with God and others happens when we are in deep awareness of our physical place in the world. In all its forms, that is good.

#ScribesAndMakers What's something you feel yo've become better at with your creative work this month?
I keep saying I'm going back to doing near-final editing using a printed copy of the memoir, but it's hard to wean myself off this computer. I did it this month! (It's interactive, of course: read and edit with the hard copy; make revisions on the computer; meditate on how I feel about the resulting structure; return to the hard copy.)

#ScribesAndMakers Our next featured creator has made toys. Have you ever?
Gosh, we only got store-bought toys at Xmas and Bdays. So I took what wasn't real and made it real. I sewed bugs from my mom's Pogo books (that I taught at "school.") In high school came Adam the Alligator, the world's first clothespin alligator. Adam lived in a terrarium on my window sill. When I married, I made Bride and Groom gators.I make Magic Men from paper clay. Are these toys? Yep, if you play with them.

#ScribesAndMakers Do you prefer when a time traveler can choose a specific time/place to go, or when they don't have control over it?
I've written 2 time travel novels. In both the time-traveler was hijacked into travel. Jean Lafitte the Pirate King returned to Katrina-threatened New Orleans because Jazzy controlled his ship-in-a-bottle. The Dauphine, his assassin, St. Claude, plus the 3 grannies were all brought back by Etoile's ditty. The time-travel world is at the mercy of my female MCs.

I know things are depressing, but today the Vicksburg Post ran a front-page article debunking the myth the city didn't celebrate 4th of July for decades because the city surrendered to US forces on July 4th. It explicitly instructed on Reconstruction and the danger to Black Mississippians for celebrating.
The editorial page chose to talk about the founding and, with the Civil War, re-founding. It quoted the Gettysburg Address.
Vicksburg is steeped in Confederate history but this.

Every time I hear Trump, I have to look at the screen to see if it's him. He doesn't sound like the same person. His voice is raspy, a lower pitch. He's lost his energy. I know he's older but it's only been a year and half since he was elected. He didn't used to sound like this.

2026-07-02 01:45:54 UTC

I have finished Reconstruction in America by Du Bois. This book has been part of my life for months. It's a good book. It's just dense. 729 pages of density. Now, to go through and transcribe my notes....

#WordWeavers A recent study found physical movement boosts creativity. Does that fit your experience?
if I want to solve a problem, I walk, quickly, and the solution comes. So, yes. But that's because I have the particular type of creative brain where low-level activity engages conscious thought so the unconscious can do its work (swimming, walking washing dishes; using limitations, such as writing prompts or required words; etc.) So the physical movement is a subset of a larger concept.

I lead a three-hour writing group every Second Saturday. Every Sunday, I write with a Contemplative Writing Group. #WordWeavers If you had to rewrite your WIP into another genre, what would it be and why?
My WIP is a memoir. If I had to rewrite it into something else, I would make it into a fake history book. A parody of the history books I learned from. Short, era-focused chapters with the same flat generic sentences, except, instead of racist propaganda, mine would tell the truth of my family, state, and national history. Which is what I'm trying to do in the memoir...

In my office, they'll see framed certificates honoring my work. If they kneel to examine the books in the hallway, they'll perceive two stacks are my work. If they peruse the bookcase in the bedroom, they'll see the shelf of books published by my friends. In my closet, they can admire the Ellenpalooza poster from a recent event. I've watched two detective series in a row where the "cliffhanger" ending of the season has the bad guys winning. Speculation about an additional season abounds. I don't care. Where is the satisfaction in watching a show for episode after episode only to have the bad guy win? Is this a trend?

Everyone seemed suspended between that child-like reaction to "Snow!" and "What the hell is going on?" It's not supposed to snow like this in New Orleans. This wasn't a, "Oh, haha—New Orleans got a dusting of snow." We got almost 10 inches. I kept taking photos and the photos kept being outdated. The snow fell. All day. I couldn't see the end of my street. Dry snow, so little tree damage or lost power. Extra warming stations opened. We handled the snow like champs. But what the hell?

Today, the Mississippi Free Press ran my article on the Vicksburg Massacres. The commemoration is next weekend, so I understand the timing. I just didn't expect it to debut on Thanksgiving Day.

I bought new pajamas. They are flannel pajamas. The question is, do I wrap them up and give them to myself for Christmas?

I read something not long ago about cross-pollination where you don't view jumping from project to project as a fault but as a boost to creativity. It is a bit disconcerting, though, when I thought I was well-planted in finishing this novel story....I admire your awareness to write the short story, get it out, and return.

Good morning,
I've been going through a rough patch lately with 3 distinct health problems. At the same time, I've dropped working on my novel that's 2nd in a series, picked up a weird novella I'm 14,000 words into, and returned to editing my memoir. Now I'm wondering if this peripateticness in writing is reflecting the chaos of my health.
Do y'all ever see your writing habits mimic life?

Whenever I get whiney about my physical injuries, all I have to do is watch a football game. Those men sustain incredible injuries.

Take your wins where you can get them--everyone at church loved the sandwiches I brought. Thanks to Rouses for that.

Y'all ever had a cast cut off? They use a saw that sounds like a buzz saw. Loud electrical whining noise. ZZZZZ! It cut, and I could feel the pressure nearing my arm.
I yelped.
Or screamed?
I scelped.
After the doc stopped, he explained it cut by vibrations, and demonstrated against his skin how it couldn't cut skin.
"Would't been nice to know earlier, maybe," he said.
No shit, Sherlock.

The thing about "pre-Roe," is that Roe changed everything. Roe ushered in the end of clients being free to say they didn't want to work for a woman lawyer. When neither birth control NOR pregnancy was covered by insurance (pregnancy is a natural state, not an illness.) When I was told I would never make as much $ as the men (bullshit to that). Roe v. Wade didn't just give reproductive freedom. It recognized that women deserve freedom.
We still do.

FYI: I quit my WaPo subscription several years ago.
Today, I get an email newsletter from the WaPo claiming I wanted these Must Reads.
I did not.
So they are reaching out to former subscribers to try to lure us back. If you think Bezos doesn't care if you cancel your subscription or whatever, I would argue your subscription cancellations matter to the paper which he owns.

Today in New Orleans, it was 96 degrees. Today in what is fall in New Orleans, the day began mild, but the temperature escalated. It's a bizarre arc. Today in the mountains of North Carolina, an area known as a "climate change haven," communities struggle. No power, no water, no internet. In the Atlantic, more storms are forming.

#WordWeavers Where in the world would you send a loved one?
Ah, to New Orleans in October:
Summer heat in New Orleans was metallic. Now, in October, the heat was clear as glass. No humidity, and the scents less noisy. Geraniums in second bloom, okra in the yard, life was restored. The soggy became neat, the stinky fresh; a time when all of us—man, woman, and babbling child—believed the Saints would go all the way. New Orleans owned the fall, and my rag-tag group owned New Orleans.

Today I wore my Saints football helmet earrings.
They won.
I'm just saying.

#WordWeavers If you could collaborate with another author, who would it be?
A year ago, I co-facilitated a contemplative writing workshop at Dillard University with a woman I didn't know. A participant asked how we could keep it going, and we started a weekly contemplative writing group. This spring, I had the urge to write a book about it. I knew I wouldn't do it if she wasn't interested. This adventure is the mix of our energies--it needs both. She said yes. So she's my dream collaborator.

I believe you are talking about Katrina. I posted today about two hurricanes that hit New Orleans on the same day, August 29th: Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and, 3 years ago, Hurricane Ida, which did the most damage to Louisiana since Katrina. Ida did not come to Mississippi until August 30th, where it did much less damage--we evacuated New Orleans to Mississippi during Ida. I live in both places and grieve the damage I know the storms have done to both repeatedly.
